Ralph and the redshirts
Maryland has already played more true freshmen than coach Friedgen had hoped when the season began.
Here are the numbers and players:
Maryland has played 10 first-year players – mostly on defense. The list includes linebackers Darin Drakeford, Avery Murray and Ryan Donohue; defensive linemen Zach Kerr, Justin Anderson and Isaiah Ross; offensive lineman Bennett Fulper; running back Caleb Porzel; kicker Nick Ferrara; and defensive back Eric Franklin.
It’s the most true freshmen to play in Friedgen’s nine-year Maryland tenure, the school said. The previous high was eight in 2004.
I asked Fridge whether 10 was more than he had hoped and intended given the team's desire to preserve a good number of redshirt seasons.
"That’s definitely more than we would have liked,” Friedgen said Sunday. “The positive thing about that is they’ve played pretty well.”
Eric Franklin became the10th freshman to play after safety Antwine Perez was injured against Duke.
There's more on this in a story upcoming for tomorrow's paper.

Dark dark days for the TERPS....wonder if things can get any worse..probably can if Fridge goes....standing in the wings is Franklin and where is the logic that indicates he will be any kind of a head coach....play calling is embarrassing and certainly we ought to get a ticket ready to send somebody back to Massachusetts....and a cobweb sweeper to post in Byrd Stadium

The question/concern isnt how many redshirts have been burned but what development and contributions the true freshman who are playing have been able to make.
While obviously being a year older helps, it doesnt increase speed or quickness. You only get four years eligibility. IMHO if you can contribute now, suit up now. The more freshman you have that are capable of playing right away, the better the program.
Ferrara has been very good. Porzel shows great promise.
Drakeford has gotten some quality time on the field.
A good sign that Franklin's first game experience includes a sack.
But the real key to this football teams future (and our skill players ability to shine) is the recruitment and development of superior OLs and DLs. We must get quicker and smarter, not necessarily bigger. Its difficult sometimes to watch our noticably inferior footspeed on the lines and LB. Our OL are often getting beat by quicker DL, our DEs are merely pushing againt OTs not rushing around and past them, and our LBs seem at least a step slower than most receivers and backs they have to cover. This has to change.
How much have these freshman (at OL, DL, and LB) shown and will they be difference makers next year?
I'm curious how the coaching staff honestly feels about the younger players development.

Lets face the facts. Turner has not delivered and neither has the running game. Fumbles surely do not help.
Maryland under Friedgen and Yow is one big bust. The Maryland Football Program at this point does not really exist. With that said I am looking forward to the Basketball Programs both men and Women. Lets get it on Brenda and Gary.

stick to the topic.....red shirt freshman....recruitment....stadium not filled on game day.....out of touch coach who loves his players...we're in bad shape.....the buck stops at the top...fridge it's time to move on....you tried and didn't make the mark with your own recruits...give debbie a hug and go.

Since the redshirts are already burned, make sure these players get a chance to play significant minutes in the final 4 games. Game experience will help them next year and this year is basically over (since we have the fewest wins of any ACC team after today).
Turner has been good throughout his career but we do need to build for tomorrow. Get the rest of the QBs some playing time. I don't want to start next year with no experience at QB.
As for Ralph, I thank him for his time and I want him to finish his contract. I remember the 90's and he has definitely improved the team. Unfortunately, it does look like it is time to part ways in the near future but I don't want have a situation like Clemson did last year. Ralph has to see the lack of progress and ask what he would do if he was the AD. Can he honestly say he would keep the coach considering the last 5 years of performance? I doubt it. He should know it might be time to retire.
As for Yow, she has maintained fiscal sanity and that is an AD's primary job. As for choosing Franklin, I am not sure why but I hope there is some master plan. I'd rather if she went out and recruited Turner Gill.
Just my $.02.
