Dino Gregory looks like fifth starter
Forward Dino Gregory really came on at the end of last season. His late-season push -- he helped the Terps battle larger front courts in the ACC tournament -- carried him into this season.
I asked Gary Williams yesterday if Gregory, a junior, had probably earned a starting spot, and the coach said yes.
"If we want to, we can start Landon Milbourne and Dino Gregory, which will be bigger than with Dave Neal," Williams said.
"I think we have a very strong, quick, physical team."

Unless one of Milbourne and Gregory have developed some semblance of a back-to-the-basket game, that lineup would be extremely one-dimensional offensively, much like last year's. Yes, they would have more height than with Neal, but they would lack his zone-busting shot from the 5 position. This team simply doesn't have enough pure shooters to score consistently without a post presence.
This is why Jordan Williams and Padgett are so important. We need one of them to emerge to really open things up for our offense. I love Gregory, but he's a sixth man type at best.

Would the starting lineup be:
PG: Bowie
SG: Vasquez
SF: Mosley
PF: Milbourne
C: Gregory

I'm very curious whether Eric Hayes, in his senior season, continues to come off the bench. Whether he starts or not, he will of course get lots of time when it matters.

so who IS gary's starting 5?
is it:
hayes vasquez mosley milbourne gregory?
in hoping that he wants to develop the freshman and then start them around mid-season then fine. but subbing gregory for dave neal is a mistake. neal was a wider body, perfect for screens and a serious enough threat to pull the opposing 4's and 5's to the three point line and open the lane for vasquez and the others. gregory will bring defense but i am concerned about him clogging the offense.
hopefully williams and padgett will make enough of a push to start at the 4 and 5. williams gets the most results when he gives his players the freedom to play and 'do their thing'.
i am hoping it runs like this:
pg: vasquez
sg: mosely
sf: milbourne
pf: gregory
c: williams
bench
hayes, tucker, bowie, padgett & choi—

Dino Gregory starting is a joke. Maryland will lose plenty of games with Gregory starting.

More Cliff Tucker. Period.
I'd start him over Mosely. The kid is fast, strong and can shoot the three better than anyone on the team.

the starting line up early in the year will be milbourne, gregory, tucker, vasquez and mosley. as williams gets some experience he will move into the line up gregory will go to power forward, milbourne will move to small forward and whomever is playing better between mosley and tucker will be at shooting gurad with vasquez at the point. hayes will be the first guard off the bench. padgett will come in for williams and gregory. if bowie can shot well from the outside he'll work his way into the rotation sometimes spelling vasquez and sometimes playing the 2 guard. choi will have trouble finding minutes. if healthy goins will see about 10-12 minutes a game and look for tucker and goins to be big surprises. if milbourne can play mostly small forward he will be a stand-out.

I am AMAZED that Cliff Tucker will not be starting this year, AND if he is not - what in tarnation could his motivation be for staying?

I said it last year and I'll say it again. Dino reminds me of Derrick Lewis, at least defensively -- but he is so active that he will score more points this year. I think he will be a difference maker on this team.

I heard from a Terrapin insider that there is a player who will be ruled academically ineligible for the season... rumor is its Dino Gregory or Cliff Tucker. Any news on this???

I think GW will center his team on GV. But unlike last year there will be better support if the players around GV know their roles. If GV can be a scorer and playmaker like a Jonny Flynn or McNamara, or Lucas that's one thing. But the remainder of the players have to show up. They can't stand around waiting for GV to materialize something out of nothing all the time. So he has to step up as a leader and motivator for this team in a way that hasn't worked out yet. It's not his show boating it's the return on investment. He has always been a good player but his eyes are rightfully on the future and the NBA. He has that right. There's no denying his driving and ball handling. It's whether the other players can join in with him.
That's where I think GW will have the biggest job this year. Everyone is expecting bigger things, but as some have already said there is a good bunch of talented players from Milbourne, Gregory, Tucker and Mosley and Hayes and the new kids, Padgett and Williams who have to earn their positions. Hard work is a given for Terps. Chemistry will win.

I also have heard rumors of a player being ineligible this year. Any truth to this? I have an ACC fantasy draft soon so any info. would be helpful.
