« A dismal day at Byrd | Main | Fridge and Chris Turner to chat »

October 18, 2009

A new quarterback or two?

Coach Friedgen said he intends to play backup quarterback Jamarr Robinson -- and perhaps freshman quarterback Danny O'Brien -- sometime soon.

He said coaches need to begin to assess their young quarterbacks and provide them game experience. Starting quarterback Chris Turner is a fifth-year senior.

"Its not a reflection on Chris. We’re not winning and we need to make some plans for the future," Friedgen said today.

Robinson is a redshirt sophomore. O'Brien is a freshman who has impressed the coaching staff.

"We don’t start doing better, we’ve got to start looking at the future, too," Fridge said. "We’re definitely going to use Jamarr. It's just a question of whether we use O'Brien too."

Injury updates:
*LB Demetrius Hartsfield, who played Saturday with a broken hand, had surgery Sunday and is out about four weeks -- longer than coaches had anticipated.

*Punter Travis Baltz (ankle) is due back against Duke on Saturday. He played as a holder against Virginia on Nick Ferrara's field-goal attempts.

*Running back Gary Douglas (shoulder) is questionable for Saturday.

Good idea. This football team is a huge disappointment. They need a lot more than a new QB, but there's no reason for these guys to sit while Turner gets all the snaps.

We're the 3rd youngest team in the country.
Why are we surprised that the team is not doing well? Other than the mediocrity of Turner. I'm not shocked. Disappointed but not shocked. Why we're so young can be placed on the Coach's shoulders, as so many others have already stated...
Do we force Ralph to retire? I say no, not this year...Give him one more year. Too bad we gave Franklin that million dollar guarantee.

I sat through that mess on Saturday. And I think there is something wrong with Turner's arm. Sore elbow or shoulder or something. He was never that accurate a passer, but he is much less accurate this year than last. Passes tipped at the line, overthrown passes, passes behind the reciever, passes thrown into coverage are all reasons to look at someone else.

And he can't throw the ball deep. You got to have someone who can lay it out there for Torrey Smith to run under.

I say it's past time to get some significant time at QB for someone else. Ralph stays with his favorite guys too long.

I've been yelling exactly this sentiment from my seats behind the bench for three games.

Turner is the worst senior QB I can ever remember, and is quite possibly the Kyle Boller of college football.

Am I crazy, or has Turner thrown more INTs for TDs than actual TDs?

Despite my view that Fridge should be shown the door, he may as well start playing someone else in the QB spot. There's really nothing to lose at this point

wow - was watching the game in PA prior to a family wedding ... i really liked porzel play - got a little swagger that seems "slipping" from the other offensive players. hope he provides a boost for the others (where are the senior offensive guys...time to stepup). defensively, no problem...even hartsfield with a busted hand did his share, will miss him this year.

come on boys, act like maryland football players ..."never give up...etc"

We shouldn't even be in this situation, I've been yelling and screaming for three years that Turner is at best a 2nd team QB, more likely he's really a 3rd teamer...he never should've been the starting QB. Ralph really screwed this up going back and forth with Steffey and Turner for the past few years when neither one of them should've ever been in the QB conversation from the beginning.

I think it's time to give our back up coach a try. Like the big man said "Its not a reflection on Ralph. We’re not winning and we need to make some plans for the future".

I thought I was the only one who thought Franklin was out of his league.Franklin should be coaching Turner in Jr. High. Give Jamar the reins for the season & save o'Brien.
Ralph is a good coach & can not be held accountable for the players giving the games away!

hard to imagine, though i hope i'm wrong of the terps turning this season around. so it would make sense to play o'brien and robinson because the future is now. and there's no future playing turner.

Unfortunately, the O line is so shorthanded that you may be sending the young guys into a grinder. Remember what happened to Jordan Steffey...the first of many concussions when put in against Va Tech.

They need experience...just be smart about it. Recruiting on the line needs to be improved before the Terps can compete again.

So terps95, who do you propose should have been the QB the past 2-3 yrs?

Ok, ok, ok. I agree with a lot of stuff here, but let's get straight on some things.

Brad & terps95, Turner may be a 2nd team QB but there's no question he's been the best option we've had for 3 years. The Portis experiment was a major failure and Steffy never played well in the games. Who are you yelling for?

cabterp has it right. I drink the Kool Aid each year and expect to be playing for an ACC championship, like 2001-2004. Get the O-Line, young RBs and QBs some game experience and compete next year. No doubt Turner & Scott have been disappointments (yes, before he broke his arm). Porzel, Adams, Douglas and Meggett need reps. Robinson and O'Brien need reps. O-Line needs game tests.

Terp faithful will remain faithful, even at 2-10.

If we start giving the young qb's game experience, then that will negate Fridges excuse for next year. Maybe this is a young team, but then you have to ask yourself, what has Fridge done when he has had veteran teams. The major problem with his philosophy starts with his fixation on getting 6 wins to slide into a bowl game....he loads up the schedule with Div II teams so he can get the 6 wins and expects to lose 4-5 games every year! That is why he is still talking about this season being a success if they can win 4 of their last 5 games....they still play in the ACC but UMD has slipped inexorably into a DIV II team

Please everybody get on the wagon with me and vouch for Chris Peterson Boise's State head coach as Umd. next football coach. His teams looks to be well discipline. His offensive playcalling is like something never seen before. You never know what his next move is. But the thing that I like most about this guy he looks the part of a no nonsense coach. So yeah please all Md. football fans that know real football and seen a few of Boise State games. This is a coach who's value has to be skyrocketing and think he is the type of coach we need here at Md.. Lets get Chris Peterson here at Md.. He's problably a pheonomanal recruiter as he always seems to come up with pro type caliber players at Boise State. As always lets go terps!!!!

yeah ... but how bout those soccer boys...now that is fun to watch! so if you need a little "break" from the gridiron, take it in

If the Titans fire Jeff Fischer, Debbbie Yow should throw the house at him. Anyone think of the last NFL head coach to move down to the College level. Last I checked, Pete Carroll has one a few games more than Ralph. Forget Peterson, lets get Jeff Fischer!!!

Turner isn't great but this is beyond him. That O-line will make any QB look bad, it is that much of a disaster. The RB's fumbling doesn't help much either. To the defense's credit, they actually played a really good game against UVA but they've been mostly awful as well. It's time to let him go, what do the Terps have like three walks on the O-line? That's a problem, he's been a respectable coach but I think it's time to make a change.

David -

The Portis experiment failed because he wasn't used properly - yet another coaching disaster. He would come in on 3rd down, usually right as Turner was playing well, and totally screw up the momentum because it was always a run play.

I would have liked to see Portis throw or do anything other than the fake handoff he was asked to do on every play.

And don't talk to me about the faithful hanging on at 2-10 - I made a bigger Terp Club donation this year and added two more seats, yet all I have to show for it is a sorry football team and a bunch of empty luxury boxes hovering over me.

Hey No.1 terpfan.Couldn't agree with you more.I have been throwing out Boise for a couple of years now. When the kool aid drinkers whine how tough it is to recruit at Md.I bring up Boise. They have been top 20 for what 7 yrs or so? They are in IDAHO!!!! I said IDAHO!!! Now there's a real recruiting mecca. Or is it they have had excellent coaches.Hire Peterson NOW!!

@ Ryan:

Obviously Josh Portis. The only reason he didn't get the start (before the academic issue) was because he couldn't memorize Ralph's Yellow Page phone book thick playbook. Mind you, Shaun Hill never understood that playbook, and McBrien and Hollenbach only knew so much, but they adapted and Taaffe adapted the playbook enough to keep Ralph from blowing his lid every day, and these QBs starting winning.

Ralph and every other coach stated flat out that Portis was their best QB, and they squandered his talent. I would've put him out there in game situations for a season and let him take his lumps and learn fast, just like Hill, McBrien and Hollenbach had to. Steffy, bless him, never would've seen the light of day, and Robinson and Turner would've fought for 2nd and 3rd QB.

Btw, Turner has stated that he "now" understands the playbook, this is his fifth year on the team.
