Last season's memorable Clemson game

Former Clemson coach Tommy Bowden sure set himself up for trouble last season.

There he was, heading into the Maryland game. Eager for his team to make a statement, Bowden said the Terps were going to be a “test” for his team and a counter to those who contended the Tigers weren’t playing physical football.

Clemson had been manhandled by Alabama in its opener and had won three in a row over less-than-stellar foes heading into the Maryland game.

Clemson looked like it would skate to victory, taking a 17-6 lead. And then the Tigers collapsed.
The big play came when Maryland linebacker Alex Wujciak stuffed quarterback Cullen Harper on fourth-and-inches to protect a 20-17 fourth-quarter lead for the Terps.

Bowden failed his self-described “test” and was gone a few weeks later.

By the way, Maryland coach Friedgen sounded almost defiant today in talking about his 1-3 team playing revenge-minded Clemson on Saturday in the Terps’ first Atlantic Coast Conference game of the season.

“I haven’t thrown in the towel one bit,” Friedgen said. “I’m still thinking about winning. I’m still thinking about winning the ACC. That’s just the way I am.”

Jeff,it's a rebiulding year so this year's Clemson game will have a lot of merit towards Ralph and his staff and a few of the national college football sports mags have had Md. at the bottom of the standings for everybody's info,as well.I guess they might be right.I see where Debbie Yow has spoken;reminds me of the GW situation last winter.

Agree with MGN Head, Larry Grabenstein. None of us like losses in College Park on Saturdays, but the Fridge's body of work is good. This season we all find out whether we're fair-weather fans. No one wants to win more than the Coach.

I was at Clemson last year and after hanging tough the first half when we could/should have been blown out - our team pulled off what I thought was an incredible upset in the 2nd half. One of the most exciting and satisfying away game victories during RF's tenure. Bowden helped a great deal with some bonehead decisions but thatonly gave us the opportunities. We took advantage and won the game. So tell me - how then we lay the egg we did a week later in Hoo'ville? Was there too. At least the weather and pre-game tailgate was great. Last year we should have won 10+, been playing in the ACCT game, and certainly played in a better bowl. ONE additional stud recruit every year since 2004 would have made the difference. Especially for a DL with no ability to pressure the opposing QB or stop the run. What was once a stellar highly ranked defense has become since 2001 a pourous excuse. Recruiting. Stud players. Game changers.

I'm an RF fan. Love the man and what he's done for the program and University but he's not untouchable. At $2mil per year expectations are high and he's accountable.

I'm certainly not a "fair weather fan" (at least 10K of them a game have already deserted ship)

Larry G of the MGN (nice man) is a cheerleader. Its his job to be upbeat, positive, and raise funds. His view though is like Capt Smith on the deck of the Titantic after hitting the iceberg saying "Boy, didnt we look good back in port!"

College football at Maryland is a business. Period. Please tell me if at this point in time we are any better a program than maybe Duke or UVA in the ACC. Please tell me how this shows progress? Please continue to admire "the body of work" as we sink lower in the ACC.

I'd give RF the benefit of the doubt if this were an abnormal year. But we've been making excuses since 2003. Even when we won 9 games after winning the Champps Bowl was it because we exceeded expectations? Last year when we were "loaded" with seniors we suffered possibly two of the most humiliating away defeats ever as well as showing up flat when we had our destiny in our own hands before a loud enthusiastic sold out national television audience. Flat too the year before against WF when we could have won the division.

I give RF credit for his body of work but look at the program since 2004. Fact is its been generally in a steady decline while most other ACC football programs have improved and moved ahead of us. Maybe RF has just taken us as far as he can.

And the one single deficiency that would have solved most if not almost all of our problems is better recruiting.

Having two to three four-five star recruits on each side of the ball every year makes everyone around them better. It gets us closer to being shoulder to shoulder with VT, FSU, Clemson, GT, UNC, and BC. I dont want to fight and scrape to have a chance as an underdog in the ACC, I want to be favored over VT, FSU, etc. I want them to truely Fear the Turtle. Talent makes for smarter and better coaches. Talent breeds self-confidence and winning. Winning puts fannies in the seats. Fannies in the seats increase revenues and TC/MGN donations. Winning sells luxury boxes.
