More on Greivis and the NBA
Thoughts after watching Greivis Vasquez work out with the Wizards and talking with him afterward:
*You get the sense that this process of working out with NBA teams will be good for Greivis even if he returns to Maryland. I had never attended one of these sessions before so I didn't realize that prospects can get some feedback from guys who really know hoops. Vasquez's session was run by Washington coach Flip Saunders with help from former NBAers Sam Cassell and Gene Banks.
"Show them how they do it at Maryland, baby," Banks, who played at Duke, yelled to Vasquez during one of the drills. Banks was not shy about offering encouragement or pointers to Vasquez and other players on hand.
Greivis seemed not only comfortable but buoyant afterward.
In the two-on-two drills, he had pretty easily taken the other prospects to the hoop. Remember that there were no big men in the drills to guard the lane. Vasquez's outside shot was not great in the scrimmages, but he looked good from behind the arc during shooting drills. He made nine of 14 uncontested shots from behind the line during one drill.
Vasquez said there is no downside to working out -- this was his third such "tryout" -- for NBA teams and going against such talents as Kentucky's Jodie Meeks and North Carolina's Wayne Ellington.
"I suggest that every junior in the country should do it," Vasquez said. "Why not do it?"
He expressed faith that his outside shot and defense are improving. He said his passing is still his best skill and that point guard -- not shooting guard -- is his natural position.
"This is about me getting better," Vasquez said.
Honestly, I don't know if Vasquez is ready for the NBA. But I respectfully disagree with fans who believe the Terps would be better off without him because of his turnovers or erratic shot selection or behavior. Remember that he led a scoring-challenged team in scoring, rebounding and assists. And he genuinely wants to improve. That counts for a lot, friends.

Comments
If anybody is old enough to remember, all I have to say is "Skip Wise". A standout in Baltimore City (Dunbar, I think), and had an excellent freshman season at Clemson before he decided to jump to the NBA. However, his game wasn't fully developed and he flopped. Wise needed more seasoning and jumped before he was ready.
Vasquez will be the next Skip Wise.
He needs that senior year.

Not one mock draft I've seen has him going in the 1st round. I think he's doing the right thing by getting evaluated by NBA franchises, but not hiring an agent. He should take the advice he gets and go back for his senior year and develop the things he's still lacking in. I agree with you that Maryland is better with him.

i think the terps need him back in a big way. i don't think vasquez would be a first round pick this yr. and another year of playing point would greatly increase his chances to be a top 15 pick in the draft for next year

vasquez is doing what every potential nba junior should be doing. if they have the resources and won't lose standing in their academic world it has always been to their benefit to compete and get professional level advice. too many collegiate ballers sign with agents get short-term benefits and don't get drafted.
vazquez's return will start to clutter the backcourt but what the hey.

By all means Greivis should return to the Terps. Doing so is better for increasing his earning power in the NBA and for the team. It's win-win if he comes back and a potential disaster for both if he bolts to the pros.

The major tragedy for Wise--and there were several tragedies--was that he didn't sign with the NBA, but with a fledgling ABA outfit called the Baltimore Claws, which went bankrupt right after he signed on the dotted line. He never saw a dime from that contract and only got an NBA cup of coffee afterward. Vasquez is not a good comp for Wise. For one thing, Wise was a much better player during an era when there were fewer franchises and no NBDL. Secondly, Vasquez has already spent three years in college. If he's smart, he'll come back to grace us Terps fans for one more year and enter the 2010 draft, which will feature fewer guards.

I can understand why some people don't like him, but objective fans would note that his game was so much improved the last half of the season. Better decisions, less turnovers, rebounding on both ends, better shot selection. And he is a very difficult matchup for most college teams. No question he is contoversial, but I also don't think there is any question the Terps are better with him. I hope he comes back.

Any idea if there are any JUCO in the picture. There has to be a hungry 2 yr guy out there that can qualify. I'm not sure I want Born ready anymore. I would gladly take a low down thumper that can grab 8-10 boards and block a few shots. Maybe a Power forward. I kinda liked the 4 man thumper rotation we threw at ACC et. all.....

Hey Grumpy Old men, your a real moron, and know nothing about BB in Baltimore. You have no business commenting on stuff you know 0 about. Skip Wise, after being named the first Freshmen ever to make al ACC left Clemson and went to the upstart ABA Claws team in Balto that eventually folded. He got into smack big time, and failed with the NBA because of this, then did a long stint in prison. You a real A-hole. I would like to fight you

Jeff - couldnt agree with you more.
I, for one, am hoping GV returns and gets another year of seasoning for the pros while leading the Terps. He's a great kid - have met him and talked with him several times - he is a major key to our success next year.
Jon - relax - GOM is always ignorant and negative - plus its only a blog!

Thanks for clearing up the 411 on Skip Wise. Baltimore Claws, what a tragedy; a great talent.
Greivis as point guard is the key. Credit Gary for making the move against the Heels - it turned the season around. Hayes learned to play off the ball; Bowie not so much. With Vasquez as point guard from day one, this team could really gel. Depth and maturity - they could sure use a healthy Burney, though - depending on the final scholarship move

Grevis will never play in the NBA! He is simply not athletic enough to be a point at that level!
His lateral quickness and foot speed will not allow him to compete in the NBA!

Why do people have a tough time with Grevis even giving it a shot to land on a NBA team? This makes absolutely no sense since this is his dream. Even if he does not make it this year it makes him a tougher player and more skilled should he return as a Terp. Also it is smart on his part to make contacts with coaches on that level so next year he is ahead of the curve. If you wanted a better job or one that pays at all, wouldn't you at least go on interviews. Even if you did not get the job you interviewed for you still have a great learning experience which might just get you in the door the next time.
Grevis' performance against Carolina also was a major boost to the program and to Gary. He did this on a national stage and I would have to believe it was a shot in the arm on the recruiting front as well. Be greatful that this guy plays for MD! Without him we had zero chance for making the Tourney.
----FROM JEFF----
Thanks for that. A Greivis update and analysis is coming on Wednesday but he still hasn't made his decision.
