South Beach blues

It's pretty easy to figure that Gary Williams isn't going to bring up Maryland's lack of success against Miami during any of his pre-game talks leading up to tip-off at BankUnited Center Wednesday night.

Facts are facts: Maryland has yet to beat Miami at home and has only one win against the Hurricanes since they joined the ACC four years ago.

If anything, Williams might point out that the Terps have won against better teams at more difficult places to play -- such as Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Dean Dome -- so a win over the Hurricanes wouldn't be such a big deal.

Maryland could benefit from the fact that it won't be a full house, and might be half-empty, considering that the students are still on break. The Terps have a lot of alums down here and could have a few fans rooting for them.

This two-game Florida swing -- Maryland plays at Florida State on Saturday -- is important since both the 'Canes and the 'Noles are as inconsistent as the Terps. But Maryland will have to play a lot better than it did against Georgia Tech last Saturday at home to have any chance.

A note to Terps fans: I will be subbing for Jeff Barker while he's taking a much-deserved vacation after football season.

The GV self promotional tour stops in Fla. in preparation for the Broadway opening of NIT Blues. Winning 8 more games, without wins here, appears unlikely. Especially so, because the "Cole advantage" has been sold out to corporate money and boring "civility". We, "diehards", will be cheering, but the "big spenders" probably won't even show up. Where has the "you suck" song gone? Have we gotten too mature at Comcast? Turn up the heat in the building, let the students be "creative", and top it off with GW grit and pressing defense. Go TERPS.

I think you underestimate the amount of Terp fans down here in South Florida. The first time Maryland played here, it was a full house, which is only 7400, and about 30% were Maryland fans. I sat next to a very pretty and friendly Miami Fan whom I later found out was Coach Heath's wife. She commented to me that she had never seen as many fans rooting for the visiting team. Go Terps.

The U Suck song only works and makes logical sense when we're crushing the opponent...and not just leading by a slim 2 points.

Let's cheer for the whole team. Vasquez is our most dynamic and most talented player...we absolutely need him. I would much prefer to have his extreme passion than the emotions of someone who simply doesn't care

If Greivis Vasquez is looking forward to his team's first road game thinking he'll be a target, he'll be disappointed. As a Hurricane alumni, I guarantee you that most of the 4,800 'Canes fans tonight don't have a clue who he is. 'Canes fans don't care about basketball. The UNC game next month isn't even sold out yet.

The Morgan State loss by 1 point dropped the Terps off the NCAA radar. A win at Miami would help a lot although im not holding my breath. I have seen Miami look mediocre against other teams but for whatever reason they have had the Terps number. The best player Maryland has is a head case who gets botherd by bleacher bums! Not good! This game will set the table for conference play and Gary needs to find a way to win!

GO TERPS!

Does it matter? The Maryland program is in shambles. Miami, not even a basketball program owns us. Virginia Tech, owns us. Vasquez is so weak. He is the most over-rated player in NCAA basketball. He is the worst shooting 2 guard that we have had as long as Gary has been there, and for some reason he is the center of the Offense. How do you blow a 17 point lead? How do you lose to Morgan St? American? Ohio? Ridiculus.

Terrible down the stretch. Guard oriented offense turning the ball over time after time.

THey just lost the same way they lost to Morgan State, with a big lead they let slip away. I hate to say it, but Gary has to go. It's over.

Well that was pathetic. 17 points...blown. GV bricks two open threes at the finish. I found myself pretty disinterested in watching the game because of all the GV "me, me me "garbage this week. I just don't like his attitude. So I at least watch it DVR delay and see that our money guy is Bowie. Then the wheels come off the cart, and Mr. Wonderful can't come through in the end. Hayes also looks outclassed too many times considering his experience level.

Vasquez missed two 3 point attempts with 5 seconds to go....

See there was a guy named Juan Dixon that would have buried those shots and in his time did bury those shots. If not him then Steve Blake.

The point? The power of humbleness is lost at College Park Bball. Since those guys left you have two, Gilchrest and Vasquez that think they are the greatest and well can't show for the spotlight when it means the most, when the season could turn, when they are juniors and should lead.

Not sure what happened to the program, but humble and hard leadership on the floor has not been around for a long, long while.

I listened online last night from L.A to Johnny Holliday and the guys. Great fun on the internet. When I tuned in with about 8 minutes left the Terps were up by 7. Then the self doubt began to blare through the computer. Nobody stepped up so Vasquez presumed the ill-suited "go to" guy role. Big mistake. There is no Juan Dixon. Joe Smith. Lonny Baxter. Stevie Francis. Len Bias. No go to guy. I really like this team, but I don't have my hopes up. Another gritty, we are the victims, Gary Williams production. Which isn't bad; just no competitor with the upper echelon. I'm sure they'll knock off a Carolina or Duke along the way, but will more often play like they did last night in Miami.Go NIT!!!!

Is Miami's Jack McClinton related in any way to former UM standout Kevin McClinton? Kevin, a DC area player, was the very last Bob Wade recruit and captain of MD's 92-93 squad. If yes, is Jack McClinton just another example of Maryland legacies that wanted nothing to do with Gary Williams?

Why is everyone constantly jumping on this team and Gary. This program is still one of the best in the country. Think about it, since 1967 this team has had 3 coaches. (And Bob Wade hardly counts). Won a National Championship, been to two final fours in the last 10 years etc etc etc. I agree that Comcast does not have the atmosphere of Cole but ever been to the Dean Dome? That place is the worst! Mclinton hit 3 great shots last night. Vasquez missed at the end. That happens. The team has a great future as long as Gary stays!!!!! If Gary goes as some of you suggest, get ready for some really tough years!!!

"THey just lost the same way they lost to Morgan State, with a big lead they let slip away. I hate to say it, but Gary has to go. It's over. "

Alex,

If anything this game should be an example of why Gary should stay. He took a team that, let's face it, is less then stellar and had them playing WAY above their heads. They were up by 17 on the road in the ACC. On the other side of the floor was Leonard Hamilton, whom it seems can't coach a lick as Miami was running around aimlessly in the first half. It took a desperate ploy - basically chucking up threes the whole second half - to get them back in the game. It was like they couldn't miss. There isnt much anyone, even Gary, can do when you have that much luck on your side. And yes it was luck. Gary plain outcoached Hamilton (as he will do with most coaches in the ACC) with a decidely inferior roster. Concentrate on recruiting better but Gary's coaching and motivating should never be questioned.

And speaking of coaching, I love the way the young guys are playing. Bowie and Mosley are impressive and if Tucker can gain some confidence, that's quite a strong trio. Hopefully the two bigs (in college terms) we have coming in next year will provide more depth and inside presence.

Great job last night Gary. Keep em playing hard. Those 3s arent going to keep falling against you all season.

It's not that the kids don't want anything to do with Gary Williams, it is that they want to get out of this area. If you were a big time basketball star would you want to stay around PG/DC/MD? With the crime and trouble which is abundant in this area? They go to places like Texas, Kansas State and Syracuse because they are secluded and provide them the isolation from trouble they seek.

My guess is that at about the 13 minute mark, up by 17, Gary told the team to run some time off the shot clock. What this accomplished was a series of poor, rushed shots with the shot clock time running out. Maryland got out of the aggresive rythmn they played with for the first 27 minutes of the game. Miami started hitting some shots, a lot of shots. Hayes, as he was last year, seems ineffective when he is not the point guard. By the way Grevious, they were booing you again.

Alex is right, it is time for Gary to go. The flex offense is dead, no one else in the country has used it since the 80's. The in your face screaming method no longer gets through. He wastes valuable timeout coaching opportunities to scream profanities. There is a man named Dreisell on the bench who can and will restore fire to the program.
And by the way "AreUKidding", the coach of Miami is Frank Haith not Leonard Hamilton, so you obviously have no clue what you are talking about.

Scott, you are right. I was getting ahead of myself.

Please simply cut and paste that post after the FSU game and we'll be all good
