More on Vasquez

Here's something else that Greivis Vasquez said in the locker room after the Georgia Tech win.

He asked rhetorically who was the one who threw the passes that allowed Eric Hayes to hit three-pointers in the second half? And who was the one who penetrated and kicked the ball to Dave Neal for an open look?

Of course, the answer is Greivis himself. And the clear implication is that Greivis feels -- because he heard boos on his home floor -- that he is a bit unappreciated.

Just because he has a bad shooting day doesn't mean he's worthless in a game, Vasquez told me and several other reporters at his locker. He said he makes lots of contributions that don't always get noticed.

Greivis is right. . .everyone just get off his back and let the guy play. He isn't perfect, he makes mistakes like anyone else, but the Terps are much better off with him then without him.

Grow up G. All people care about is your game. Play hard, hit your shots and the cheers will come.

I hope this outburst by Vasquez is not a sign of bad things to come later on in the season when they struggle against the better teams-his attitude is terrible and I hope he leaves after this yr. I have been watching terps ball for 30 yrs and he is the most immature and self-centered player the terps have ever had. Maybe Keith Booth can tell him play basketball with class and respect. The fans have always supported the terps and we have one of the better home court advantages in the NCAA.

Fair weather fans are too hard on him, Gary, and the program. Let the season play out. If we don't make the NCAA's I am a bigtime Williams supporter and season ticket holder who would be ready for a change, but be careful of what you wish for. You are not a Terp supporter if you are booing or yelling discouraging remarks at our tearm.

i was at the game located in row E(5th row across from the maryland bench) and the fans were pathetic. it was the worst home-court advantage i've ever seen (i'm a professional student who has seen most games at cole and comcast since 1999). while i wish greivis could've expressed himself AFTER the game was over, i can't say that i disagree with his reaction. terps fans that want to come and complain and yell discouraging remarks at non-professional STUDENT athletes should not attend games. i'm not against the occasional boo but yelling discouraging remarks that the STUDENT players can hear is not helpfull. the majority of the fans do cheer on and support the terps, but there are more than a few that need an attitude adjustment (especially the 3 behind me in row F). These are STUDENTS and not professional atheletes doing their best for the University of Maryland. Go Terps!

Grievance Vasquez?

Vasquez *is* infuriating to watch at times, but he's also still the heart of the team. I don't think the Terps can win vs. tougher ACC opponents without Greivis hitting from the outside. If he's open from the outside, he has to take these shots... the Terps desperately need him to produce. And to try and produce... he's easily the team's best offensive threat.

One thing I take away from Greivis's comments is that the crowd does affect him. Which means he probably needs the home crowd to actively support him. Unfortunately, he's likely to draw more ire than support after this... which frankly will probably hinder his play. Not good. I hope the team has a good shrink, because we need him to be playing at his best.

As an aside, I really don't like the Comcast Center. The crowd seems to make much less impact than it did at Cole, and the colors are drab: the building feels dated and uninspired.

Another aside, I don't believe Gary Williams is going anywhere. I also don't think he *should* go anywhere. If Maryland keeps this core together, and adds Jordan Williams to the rotation (likely as a starter), we're likely looking at a 20-win season next year, with a nice mix for future years. If anything, the future looks good...

gary doesn't ever tell grevis to reign it in, so the fans had to do something. without them booing, he would continue to throw up shots with 33 seconds left on the shot clock like that somehow would get his game going. grevis should worry about the fans after the game. he was telling the fans to quiet down when the terps were still trailing.

Oh come on...

It's not his shooting percentage that bothers people. You don't find anyone booing Hayes and Milbourne and Neal, who are all shooting just as bad (or worse) most days.

It's his shot choices and his me-first attitude. He runs down the court, he drives, jumps, dives, tumbles, rolls, whatever... and whenever he feels like... he shoots.

I remember standing up in shock when Hayes hit one of his threes... not because Hayes hit the three, but because Greivis decided to pass the ball instead of go crazy with it.

His defense has been bad this season, which used to be the only part of the game I could defend. Bad defense, bad decision making... and a God-awful attitude.

When is Greivis going to get it? It's just like last year when he said "I have to prove everyone wrong. They don't think I can play." No. It's not that we don't think you can play. You can play. You can shoot. Sure. But you don't play team ball. You make bad decisions. And until you get THAT through your head, instead of "they think I suck," you will continue to suck.

New chant for next game: Leave Us, Greivis... (clap clap, clap clap clap)

I agree with GV that fans should not boo their own players, but I think his method of expressing his displeasure is pretty immature. The post game comments were ok, but the behavior during the game isn't.

I love GV's fire but would like to see him contain it to the court instead of responding to the fans in the middle of a game, even if it was won at that point.

The University belongs to students and there isn't any requirement that they have to act a certain way. But it is disappointing that they don't show up for games and when they are there they act in such a boorish way. But more than the students it is completely unacceptable that the season ticket holders don't show and continue to voice their displeasure at the players and the coaches.
The booing but more so the stream of consciousness venting prevents a lot of people from enjoying the game. Maryland struggled in the first half but it was possible that they could come back to win. And in fact they did. But in the meantime the behavior of too many fans spoiled the afternoon for the rest of us. The sin isn't with the players the sin is with the fans.

Listen, shout up and play. For one all players go through this and two it is well deserved.

He is suppose to get use to criticisms.

GV is a good kid. He is polite when you see him off of the court and he passionately wants to succeed on the court. Both sides in this conversation are right. He does try very hard and if he is having an off night he shouldn't be booed. However I was one of those in the lower seats of the upper deck who did boo (along w/ other alumnus around me) at one point in the game. It was a follow of another out of controll poor decision he made resulting in a turnover. This had followed a play where he came to the top of the key and jacked it from 3 for his 4th (5th?) miss from behind the arc and there were at least 25 secs on the clock.

I appreciate the effort he puts out there and think he is the best player on the team, but it is just mind-numbingly frustrating to watch him repeat the same mistakes from game to game or even from play to play. That is why people booed...I've been going to games for over 20 years now and never heard people boo even in the thin days right after Walt left in 93. These teams tried very hard and sure, not a lot of people showed up, but we respected the effort and they learned and got better as a team as the season progressed. Sometimes GV doesn't show us that capability but I'm sure he has it.

As someone that was probably as upset as anyone when I read more and more about the in-game and post-game outbursts, I have to give credit for his response after the fact between Schmuck's article today and GW's radio show last night. I think I made a lot of the same points Peter did, and I came away from his article feeling certain that Grevis is definitely NOT the next John Gilchrist. I'll be the first to admit that I was a little unfair in that regard.

I know some of it is spin, but for those that didn't hear, Gary said GV was the only one not cheering and bouncing around in the locker room after the Tech win. This was before coach even had the chance to lay into him too. Now I've heard Gary's Subway commercials and an actor he is not, and he sounded crushed as he explained how a kid from Venezuela was living his dream of American basketball and realized the huge mistake he made that night as he sat by his locker. Gary also went on to talk about how great GV is to any children that come through to meet him and that his actions should speak louder than words when it comes to loving Maryland basketball. While I was touched Caner-Medley felt love for Maryland when he said "I'm from Maryland, you can't fight me," he was a punk post-game.

Couple that with the phone interview with PS and he sounds sorry. Not sorry it happened, but sorry he did it and that takes a pretty strong man. Even Debbie Yow, who would have just loved to turn the screws on Gary over this seemed blown away. This is the same Debbie that played dumb to the media when the Evans recruiting mess hit the fan.

So while I still feel like he did need a little attitude checking, I think he's taken his lumps. Hopefully fans can feel like they made their point and it's time to close ranks on them if they do boo him again without a new cause. Help the kid grow, help the team win. There's a lot of money paid to go and fans should be able to do what they want, but it reminds me of when you sit by the wings of an airplane. You assume responsibilities to help others by taking your seat too. As it's also been said, recruits will be hard to come by if they come to Comcast to see a Snapple bottle hit one of our own player's family members or something.
