Torrey Smith's day

I asked Torrey Smith after the game whether he had expected to break a kickoff return for a touchdown before now. His 99-yard touchdown yesterday was a key to the game.

Smith replied with a smile that he had thought he was about to break one "against Florida State, Eastern Michigan, Cal and Wake Forest."

Smith set the single-season Atlantic Coast Conference record for kickoff return yards.

He's also part of a promising young receiving corps for next season.

Note: I'll look back at Maryland's season in a story to follow.

While awaiting your story, Jeff...

Does everybody forget that Clemson was the unanimous choice to win the ACC in Mid-August? Terps were considered in Not-a-chance territory. Then Steffy got named starter...rumours Turner would transfer...Steffy hurt in Delaware game..Turner's first start of year on road against MTS. I think much too much has been made of that loss. MTS was on a roll at the time...remember?

"LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -Robbie McAtee tackled Eldred King at the 1-yard line as time expired to preserve Kentucky's 20-14 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Saturday night.
McAtee's game-saving ankle tackle came after Middle Tennessee quarterback Joe Craddock heaved a desperation pass 61 yards in what appeared to be a last-second victory for the Blue Raiders. Instead, McAtee's tackle kept Kentucky undefeated (3-0) and prevented the Blue Raiders (1-2) from a second straight win over a major conference foe, having beaten Maryland a week earlier."

MTS is a good team...certainly much better than Duke and they come to Byrd next fall for a rematch.

Terps started their run on ranked teams with CAL and really raised our hopes. On Oct 25, the sky was the limit...6-2!!! But's let get real, I don't think we've beaten VT or BC since they joined the ACC and have only beaten FSU twice all-time. Also, wins over Clem, NCS & UNC were by 3 pts or less each. Terps should get kudos as those games could have gone either way, but they found a way to win.

Overall, this season exceeded my expectation and the "experts". I was in Byrd to see all 7 home games while we went 6-1.

Worst part is 30 seniors that have to be replaced...next years team will be young....and so the cycle goes...

As a former Maryland resident, I had a ball at yesterday's Humanitarian Bowl! I know it was a long way to travel, but I want to thank all the Maryland fans that made the trip. Come on back soon (maybe in the summer when it's hot) and thanks for giving us distant Terp fans something to cheer about!

I’m elated that the Terps won in Boise, and did much better than the experts predicted this year. However, I didn’t see any improvement in the defense, as Nevada scored 35 (vs their season average of 38 PPG), and came very close to their 510 YPG average. The defense hasn’t been that good since Fridge’s first 2 years in College Park. Any thoughts on how the Terps can/will improve their defense by next Fall?

ww - For the Terps to improve their D next year & get back to the results they had w/Blackney they need some DB's like Foxworth who can cover 1 on 1 to support more blitzes....look what VT does every year w/a pressure D. Has been years w/o effective DE/DL personnel for consistent pass rush (or run stop unfortunately) & our DB's may be fast, but perhaps just not skilled enough to play much man so they had to play soft insuring countless easy catches 2 yards in front of them...hopefully some true cover corners are in the pipeline so we can play attack D again like VT (thankfully their D gave ACC 1st BCS win in 9 yrs). Realistically if we could go 8-5 w/bowl win next year that would be a victory looking at '09 sched w/Rutgers & Cal non-conf & many young & improving ACC teams (NCSt, VT, & FSU). Fortunately no GT triple option or UNC in 09 as both are young & on a faster rise than us. Hoping a "young" D-line & O-line will surprise & D Scott, good receivers (even if DHB leaves) & senior Turner to light it up for 9-3 year though. Go Terps

terps77, let's not forget how many should've-been-interceptions were big-yardage gain completions due to the CBs not looking back at the ball and playing to it.
