Loose ends

Coach Friedgen says injured receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey (strained calf) is expected to be available by bowl time. "I'm hoping so," the coach said.

Fridge says defensive linemen Travis Ivey and Dion Armstrong have bad ankles and O-lineman Bruce Campbell has a sore shoulder, but "I think everybody will be back for the bowl game."

Maryland clearly is happy to be bowl-eligible. A bowl offers a chance to have some fun and end the season on an up note after losing three of the last four games.

But it's not easy for coaches to wait around to find out which bowl game wants Maryland -- especially since it's not likely to be an upper-echelon game.

"Right now I don’t think we’ve got a lot of choice. We’ll go where we have to go," Fridge said.

That is Maryland's problem they are just happy to be bowl eligible. I saw no desire to win either of the last two games. The offensive line, which was supposed to be the strength under performed all year. It also seems like every game for a good as Turner plays he always has a stetch of 2 or 3 possessions at critical time where he just cannot complete a pass. It is either high or low.

Last year we were happy to be bowl eligible at 6-6, this year we are happy to be bowl eligible at 7-5, if my Terp math is correct we are 13-11 in the regular season the past 2 years (7-9 in ACC play), woo-hoo!!!, simply outstanding! if you like average which is apparently what we have become after our brief success in 2001-2003, just average.......

4-4, 3-5, 5-3, 3-5, 3-5 - tx terp. quite a way from the 10 wins seasons.

awful end to this season. we had a veteran O Line to boot. that will not be the case next year.

beaten 37-3 @ home by a team that gave up 500+ yards in their house the following week. we are galaxies from the top. national title hopes = a joke.

A heck of a long way........ one of the lowlights this year was the opportunity we had to beat VT @ VT. I was there for the massacre a couple years ago, it wasn't a good night to be wearing Terp gear sitting in Lane while we were getting pounded and totally outclassed from top to bottom but i stayed for the whole butt whopping supporting Ralph and his fellas, anyhow, fast forward to this year, VT has a trio of average QB's at best, they are not the dominating team that they have had in the past but yet they win games and they beat us with their QB's dinged up a bit. It was a golden opportunity to get a nice road win and some sort of revenge measure for what happened down there a couple years ago, but nope, we turned turtle and gave up a zillion yards to a RB who hadn't made much of a spash prior to that game. Bud Foster and Frank Beamer own Ralph, the proof is that they took their average teams and beat us when they were ripe for the picking.

You are exactly right. The expectations of this program are to be bowl eligible. That's always a good thing, but there is no "drive" to get to the next level. Plenty of talk, but not much action. Becoming a champion starts in January, with training, workouts with your teammates, going the extra mile because you want it more than the other guy. The look of bewilderment on Fridge's face after yet another loss speaks volumes. It tells me he really isn't reaching these kids. Sorry, but that's what a coach has to do and Ralph is not able to do that on a consistent basis. Everybody has a bad game once in a while, but this guy is making a career of it. And one final thought: Before anyone gets too hung up on the Terps beating 4 ranked teams; look at the rankings now. None of those teams are ranked at the end of the season. So, really not that impressive in retrospect.

A lot of folks on this blog have memory loss, or are just plain ignorant.
Does anyone remember....
*This team was picked to finish 8 or 9 in the ACC
*This team had Jordan Steffy as starting quaterback on opening day who suffered season ending injury
*Turner's first game as starter was MTS
*Unexpected win against Cal followed, where defense was fading in 4th quarter
*come back win at Clemson from 11 down at half to win by 3
*Being shutout at Virginia...followed by shutout at home of Wake...highest ranked ACC team at that point
*3pt homecoming win vs NCState in a downpour
*10 pt loss to eventual Coastal Champion VaTech at their place
*Comeback win versus UNC at home in more rain
*FSU was a chance to make the title game...WHO KNEW? Who would have thought on Aug 30? I was in the stands for all 7 home games and at least I can say we were outplayed. The cinderella slipper was knocked off. Both offensively and defensively, FSU won the majority of the downs and it showed.
*BC a 7 pt loss to the OTHER team that will go to the title game.

This squad exceeded Media and procrastinator expectations and does not deserve to be maligned. They won 3 ACC games by 3 points or less that could have gone they otherway but for the heart of this team.
I say congrats to the Terps on a good season that exceeded the "experts" predictions.
I am looking forward to attending the Bowl game (anywhere but Boise!)

Hey terpcentral!! Who said anything about "National title hopes"?
Where did you hear that?
Let's see...when was last time ACC won National title?
........
1999 Florida State..they also won in 1993
Since joining ACC in 1992, Florida State has won or shared the league title 12 times in 17 years..that's 70.6% of the time.
A prerequisite to even being considered is to be a perrenial power in your conference. Right now that is VT. Since joining ACC 5 years ago, they have won it twice (and maybe 3 times after this Saturday) yet they always lose their Bowl game, hence the nickname, "Chokies". Talk about program frustrations and not being able to get over the top!! VT is 7-13 in Bowl games all-time. 3 trips to BCS bowls...0-3.
Now that's disappointment
