Greivis vs. 'The Wizard'
There's been a lot of talk on this blog comparing Greivis Vasquez to Walt Williams, and this season's team to the one "The Wizard" played on during his senior year in College Park.
I have two thoughts, having covered Walt throughout his career at Maryland (yes, I am that old!): They are similar in that Williams tried to prove he was a point guard (he wasn't) and so does Vasquez (he is more of a point guard than Walt, but takes too many chances). Also, this season's team is similar to the 1991-92 version and probably will finish with a similar record (14-15, 5-11 in the ACC).
But Vasquez certainly had a Wizard-like game Wednesday night against Michigan -- 23 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and one turnover in 35 minutes, along with solid defense against Manny Harris (5 of 15 from the field). It was one of the best games I've seen Greivis play as a Terp, but he will have to do that nearly every night (or close to it, especially with the turnovers) for Maryland to be competitive.
When Walt played at Maryland, I used to whistle the theme song from "The Wizard of Oz."
Anybody have any suggestions about a theme song for Vasquez this season?

How about the theme song:
"You are nuts to think this team will go 14-15 this season"

I suggest Rico Suave as Greivis theme

Poor comparison....If Greivis ends up a lottery pick, then the comparison holds.

Probably going 14-15 (5-11 ACC) is ridiculous how you could say. They are 5-2 with two quality wins and 2 losses that aren't going to hurt them at all (to a top 5 and a top 25 team). Give them a chance jeez...

Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' with Disaster."

Markus, you are an idiot. There are really no more challenging OOC games (not saying they won't lose one). If they go 5-11 in the ACC I would be surprised, plus they would probably grab one in the ACCT. I think absolute worst case scenario for this team is 18 wins.
Don's response: Powell, did you forget that the Terps couldn't beat American (Dec. 22) last year, barely beat Charlotte (Jan. 3) and didn't win the opening round in the ACC Tournament with a better team the past two years. I might be an idiot, but I am a realistic idiot.

"It was one of the best games I've seen Greivis play as a Terp, but he will have to do that nearly every night (or close to it, especially with the turnovers) for Maryland to be competitive."
I would go with "he will have to do that nearly every night for anybody to confuse him with Walt Williams."
I saw all those games up close and personal. Walt went on a unstoppable tear where he put up 20-25 points a game for easily the first 15 games, with what amounted to very little help from his teammates. (Not that I didn't love those guys, but Greivis has a lot more to work with here.)
Why don't we just let Greivis be Greivis and let the kid show us he's grown up a little?

Here is the Terps in a nutshell. It will be the same as when Caner-Medley was here. They will only be as good as Vasquez plays. He is not nearly as consistent enough to win. That is what happens when you really heavily on your backcourt and do not have a big man presence. The elite teams have great backcourts but also at least 2 hard working big men.
i was watching a clip from the National Championship season. It was early and #2 Illinois was in town. UM was #4. Baxter got in foul trouble early. Guess what happened? Wilcox put up a then career high of 19 points and 15 boards. Maryland blew them away. Dixon had 25.
But, in the game, the main thing was Steve Blake found open men. He was the best PG in the Nation because he was a leader. Vasquez is not a leader. He is too worried about making a cool pass instead of a smart one. Sure, every once in a while it works out. Put, until UM develops some chemistry they will not get back to where they were when Gilchrest left. Hopefully, Isiah Epps or Taron buie are that answer and Williams, Padgett, Smith, and Barton get us back to being 1 of the elite ACC teams of the mid 90s through 2004.

This edition of the Terps has more overall talent than the 1991-92 squad (although obviously a gaping hole in the front court). But I won't start comparing Greivis to Walt until he scores 30 points in 7 (or at least 5) consecutive games.
Plus he has to wear his socks up to his knees.

Walt will always be my favorite Terp because he kept the program from dying. When the sanctions hit, the program was 1-step away from the ledge. Walt could've gone anywhere to play, but he stayed and kept this team respectable. Other than the National Title, the Maryland moment that choked me up the most was when the Terps retired Walt's number before his last game as a senior. He seemed shocked and touched that they did it so soon. Everything that has happened since, can in some way be traced to Walt staying with the team.

You guy's wouldn't Know talent if it fell out the sky and crushed your Brain, just because the guys around him are so gutless you'll never see his full game until he gets to the NBA!!! then he'll be laughing at you idiots. lol

The biggest reason why the comparison falls way short is that Vasquez is a divisive figure and Walt is a great guy. Although I support Vasquez (even if I don't like everything he does) it seems like a lot of fans despise him. Walt was well-liked on campus, was cheered for not bailing on his committment when MD was severely sanctioned, and is viewed as a savior by many fans who remember the dark days following Len's death. Walt is a generous guy who has contributed significant amounts of money to the university. I was a student during the Bob Wade error -- the negative posters on here just have no clue (or have forgotten) how bad it can really get. For these reasons, Walt will always be my favorite Terp. I will support Vaszquez, but he won't even be in the discussion of favorites.

How about whistling the theme from "The Benny Hill Show."
Once they start to get dominated by better and more physical teams it will fit.

There is no excuse for them not being 12-2 going into ACC play. They play Duke and UNC 2x each. Thats 0-4, Can they go 8-4 with the other 12 games? i don't know. But, if they can, then they are 20-10 with a resume of Mich St, Mich, Vermont, and whatever ACC teams they beat.
hard to tell.

Anyone who thinks greivis is anywhere close to as good as walt was is either 18 years old or a baltimoron.

Comparing Vasquez to Walt Williams is insuklting to Walt. Walt was a high draft pick and a consistently great player throughout his career at UM. When Vasquez figures out how to be consistent, he might get drafted but, even then, he isn't in "The Wizard's" class. Apples to oranges my friend.
