Game analysis on the fly

Once again, the Terps are left dazed. They keep saying they’re better than their record, and sometimes it feels that way. But they’ve run out of time this season to rise above the pack.

Here’s the good, the bad and the ugly.

The good: Danny Oquendo was marvelous on third and fourth down; Chris Turner didn’t quit; and the defense was adequate.

The bad: The defense didn’t force any turnovers, which has been kind of a recurring problem. A couple players said Terrell Skinner slipped on the 45-yard Boston College touchdown reception, but I didn’t see it from the press box. Anybody catch that on TV?

The offensive line struggled against a good BC defense. The Maryland running game reminded me of how it had struggled against Virginia Tech. Fridge called the O-line play “disheartening” because it’s a veteran unit and he had expected more.

The ugly: Maryland had two 100-yard receivers (Torrey Smith and Oquendo). But the receivers sure dropped a lot of balls. Was it the chilly weather? A lack of focus? Who knows.

Time for Ralph to go! He can't inspire his players to play hard week in and week out.

Bad:
Gronkowski
Anthony Wiseman, Jeff Allen, Jamari McCollough and the secondary
Franklin's decision not to play Megget more
Da'reel Scott played too much
The O line's run blocking and pass blocking
Obi's missed FG from 36-37 yards out

Good:
Turner
Oquendo
Torey Smith
Amani Le Odai

I wish people would stop calling for Friedgen to be fired. I think that he is doing a good job with what he has to work with. After the Bobby Ross regime, the Maryland football program was awful. In 8 years as coach, Friedgen has taken the team to 6 bowls. That is pretty good. I just don't think our d-linemen were big enough, and the o-linemen weren't nasty enough. Hopefully, that will change with the incoming class for 2009.

o line sub par. the "punt" and interceptions set up 3 bc td's. d plaed well enough to win. too many dropped balls. 7-5. too many bad losses this yr doesn't make up for the good wins. really a 7-5 team should not be in any bowl game. (there are too many bowl games)

Well there we have it -- another head-scratching season filled with wonderful highs and almost as many miserable lows. Despite the loss -- to a very good team, by the way -- the Terps should be congratulated on a winning season in a very tough league, which will net them a Bowl game.

Yet there's a palpable air of disappointment surrounding this program. The question is -- Why?

This team has shown signs of greatness this year, and in years past by beating some very good teams. Friedgen is getting the athletes and they can match up physically with top-tier programs these days.

Then there are the losses. Losses alone aren't the issue, it's HOW they lose and to whom. In some cases, they're losing to inferior teams that simply seem to want it more. And against better opponents, they've been blown out or completely outclassed. Worse, many of this team's more miserable outings came under the glare of the national spotlight.

Terp fans are disappointed because we know this team is capable of better things.

This program seems to have settled back in to a befuddling state of mediocrity.

Are my expectations too high?

BC's run D was light's out but I thought it was our D that would come up with the big play as their QB was suspect. --Good game from Turner. He was poised, accurate (mostly) and I didn't think he could throw the deep ball. I just hope we show up for whatever bowl we get.

College kids aren't pros so I hesitate to call anyone out, but Jeff Allen had a tough game. I think it was he who slipped on the TD pass, but he slipped because he was in poor position, had his hips turned the wrong way and was thoroughly beat on the play. But he also let an errant floating pass go right through his arms just before BC scored its first TD. I'm sure he is feeling worse than anyone about it, but those are the type of plays that the Terps didn't seem to make this year.

Can someone please call out Wiseman finally?
Can someone please call out Gronkowski?

What can i say :)
