Surprised by season's first half?
Later this week, I'll do a midseason analysis of the first six games and we can discuss among ourselves.
What has surprised you the most?
For me, it's that:
• Terps fell flatter than my flat-screen at Virginia.
• Veteran offensive line, minus injuries of last season, has struggled.
• Maryland has been wildly inconsistent, not only from game-to-game but half-to-half. Who could have seen the Terps shutting down Clemson in the second half after getting dominated the first 30 minutes? This sort of thing has plagued UM in previous years, as we know.
• The ACC is even more volatile and unpredictable than I imagined. It all leaves the Terps an opening, particularly with four of their remaining six games at home.

Comments
I'm not at all surprised by the record, in fact, 4-2 is exactly where I thought they would be but the losses would be to Cal and Clemson.
I'm a little shocked that Morgan Green has played so little given the fragileness of Scott and inexperience at RB.

I'm a big Ohio State fan and I have gotten used to losing the big games when it really counts. I think that the Terps have a lot of potential on that team but like Ohio State they can not win the important games. The only difference is Ohio State loses the games they are expected and Maryland loses the games they are expected to win. Also, many of my friends who went to Maryland keep telling me that there is no good recruiting in the area and that is why Maryland can't be good because of this. That is also not true. There are plenty of good recruits around here but the fact that the Terps can't beat MTSU and Virginia team who barely have a team convince these guys to go to Penn State or Ohio State, the two big recruiting powers in the area. I think that Maryland could (and should) be in the rankings. Imagine what being in the rankings would do for their recruiting. They would likely never get to USC, Florida, Texas, or Ohio States level of recruiting but they could get a pretty good team. It's not that bad now. And my last think is what is with Freidgen's inability to play Freshman. In their recent win against Wisconson, I believe they played 10 Freshman if not more. Maryland has Chism, Boykins, and Tate all waiting for their chance to play why aren't they getting it.

I don't ,and never have ripped the coaches. And I'm not going to now. But I think this team may now be getting "over" coached. The numerous mental errors in the UVa game, quoted by Ralph, supports this as well. The players must be confused on the field. If you watched the Cal game, then you know MD can run against a big D. If today we are not running the ball well, and Heyward-Bey is getting zero receptions, then we're too deep into the playbook and need to back up and run our base offense better. This MD offensive team is very balanced, but we're not Oklahoma or USC. We MUST run the well, and Heyward-Bey must be getting Calvin Johnson-like (GT) opportunities. The coaches are thinking too much. WE AREN'T THAT FOOTBALL TEAM. Stick with our strengths, and "hit'em in the mouth". We don't loosen defenses up, we shoot ourselves in the foot instead. Now then - I expect to run the table. Thank you.

Rebuilding,
Tate is playing quite often as it is, while Chism already burned his redshirt. It doesn't make sense to play Boykins when there are 2 Srs and an All-American at his position.
This certainly is NOT a lack of talent that is MD's problem. We have more talent on our team than UVA or MTSU.
I think the biggest issue is the defensive scheme and a lack of motivation from the players. For whatever reason, it seems like these players just don't show intensity every week.

I thought before the season started that we would be 4-2 right now and I think that the suprising thing is that we lost to Mid TN and UVA but beat Cal and Clemson. This is the most frustrating thing for most is the "what ifs". What if we beat the two dogs - we would be 6-0 and ranked. Even if we just beat UVA we would be 5-1 and ranked. I think this team is still capable of beating any team out there as well as losing to any team out there. This was the case last year with loses to UVA and UNC sandwiched between big wins against ranked teams. I felt last year was more a reason of injuries and inconsistent play and this year to inconsistent play. I was pretty upset after the loss to UVA last year and this year - I was very upset with Ralph's comments that he isn't reaching these kids - well that is his job (to a point) - but I will say this - we are much better off now than with the previous three head coaches we had here. This is college football and coaches can only do so much - it is up to the kids to decide when to really put it out there each week - you can see that the effort wasn't there in both losses - that is not the coaches as I think they tried their best and are more frustrated than the fans. I don't think the Terps would have beat either Cal or Clemson if they had not lost to Mid TN and I feel that this will be the case for this loss. The good news is that the league is still wide open and the Terps "could" essentially win the rest of thier games. I am suprised by the offensive line play as well as the letdown for the UVA game - unlike others - I am not suprised by the defense as we all knew it would be suspect.
I think the terps will beat NC State and BC and will win at least two of the Wake, VT, Fla State, UNC games - so that puts them at 8-4.If they finish with 8 to 9 wins this year and a bowl game then that is pretty good. I think we all want to see 8 to 9 wins each year - 10 would be great - I have faith in the coaches.
Any year without a winning record or a bowl is unacceptable - I really thought the terps were going to beat a tough Oregon State team last year -
If you look at last year and what could have been - wins against UVA, UNC, and Wake (games I though they should or could have won) would have put them at 9-4 like the previous year - I hope this teams learns from last year and halfway through this one because 8 or 9 wins is still a realistic goal.
I don't know about anyone else but I had the same sick feeling after this 31-0 loss as I did after the mens basketball team lost to Clemson last year .....
Go Terps.

I was at the UVA game with all the other UMD fans, and when it went to 21-0 I felt pretty sick myself!!

At mid season we've lost to two weaker teams. However,no points on the board against Va. has me more concerned about the next game.We have too much talent to not even play for a couple of field goals;and the darn kicker has issues!I thought the D was the weaker unit this year but just like the Ravens,if you keep the defense out on the field too long, quess what? They get tired, too! I used to say,"score more points!" Now, it's what the heck is going on with a Div.1 offense at Md??
