« Maryland player quotes | Main | Friedgen seems puzzled »

Musings about that stunning loss ...

It's become a cliche in football to refer to "trap" games -- those that follow big wins and seem to invite a letdown.

But how do you fall into a trap when you see it coming?

That's what's so puzzling to me about the Terps. They were warned all week about letting down against Virginia and I believed they understood. But they still came out flat. Isn't that like driving into a ditch that's marked, "BEWARE: DITCH AHEAD."

Football games quickly expose pretenders. Virginia acted like it was playing for something. The Terps? Not so much.

There's a parallel with the Middle Tennessee game. In both games, Maryland's opponent started quickly. Middle Tennessee began with an 80-yard touchdown drive. Virginia scored touchdowns on two of its first three possessions. For that matter, Clemson scored on its first two drives, too.

The Terps aren't good enough to imagine they can come back every week like they did at Death Valley.

Do you blame the coaches or the players? Feel free to weigh in.

Some other points:

• Interesting comment from Kevin Barnes about the secondary. He said he and Anthony Wiseman were both banged up but couldn't leave the game because there was nobody to replace them in the injury-depleted secondary. Barnes said he was "dazed" by a hit to the helmet.

• Fridge says every week that Maryland is trying to get the ball more to Darrius-Heyward Bey. He had only had a few passes thrown in his direction against Virginia. Is Fridge suggesting Heyward-Bey isn't being thrown to more because he's not getting open? Certainly teams have been rotating extra help to cover Heyward-Bey. But shouldn't that leave other receivers open?

It's clearly the coach's fault. Teams are a reflection of their coaches. He gets uptight and his team plays tight. He takes lessor competition lightly and his team doesn't get up to play. It'd be nice if he resigned but he won't. It'd be nice if Debbie Yow fired him but she won't. It'd be nice to get a high quality coach from a proven program in there but Yow will be seeking a bargain based on what they'll be eating in Fridge's contract. I'm likin' upstart Alabama. They're on as much as the Terps (what's that about?), have a quality coach who knows how to recruit and win, and that's a nice change of pace for a 40 year Terps fan.

Does this team always need their home fans to keep them motivated to play good football?Don't they understand you have to go into another team's stadium with a different mindset to beat ?I respectfully disagree that Ralph is all to blame.I understand that he might be losing players again. But,NO POINTS?Are you kidding me?With some of that talent? How about some more heart and pride out on the road!Let's take the music out of the players ears for awhile so they can hear the real music of the fans afterwards;we're not demanding to be #1 all the time, just show us some character when you have to have it-away from the campus confines!?

Standing with the Maryland student section in Charlottesville, this old alum was totally embarrassed by the chant of "You suck, you suck, you suck!" Actually, we sucked!! If my alma mater had a game plan it was totally absent last night. If we had looked at Virginia game film, it sure didn't look like anything was learned from it. To be honest, I believe it is time for Ralph (bless his heart) to step aside. He has brought us some wonderful years, but now we need someone to continue the type of development the football program deserves. We need less athleticism and more quality. Athletes who can learn and develop. Athletes who can be trained and can improve week to week.

At this point I question the senior leadership, and it begins with the underperforming senior-laden offensive line.

How can you be shocked when this team loses? This is the team that lost to Middle Tenn State and barely beat Delaware. Any team can beat them. Blame it on marginal players or the coaching staff, but the inconsistency has been here during the entire regime.

out coached, out played out hustled

This one is on the coaches.
The O was so vanilla you would think we were trying to hide what we were capable of doing. One screen on the first play from scrmiage then abandoned. No quick passes to the flats. Continually running Scott to the short side of the field. No reverses. No end arounds. Every play that we could have possibly run to take advantqage of the speed on the team was left in the bag. You don't beat even bad teams that way.

The D was basic Cosh. What more needs to be said.

As a long time fan of Maryland and recent season ticket holder I say goodbye to the Fridge & his defensive coordinator.

The last real coach Maryland had was Bobby Ross.

I have had enough of the excuses.

Norman

If at the start of the season you told me the Terps would be 4-2 after 6 games, I would have been happy. Yes, the losses to Virginia and Middle Tennessee State were disappointing, but the season can still turn out good, 8-4. The Terps need more focus on all of the opponents and more home games will help for the rest of the season.

This team lack leadership.

No players seem to be willing or able to lead. They just dont get fired up. This seems especially true on defense. No EJ, D'Qwell. Shawnee, etc. Guys who would kick ass to get the team heads straight.

Offense just seems to be going thru the motions. How many 3rd and longs did we have last night? Offensive line is huge disappointment. I know at 4-2 we can still have a pretty good season, but Fridgen needs to make some changes up front. Let some of the young guys play. Burn the redshirt. Hell, there are 6 games left...let someone play who wants to play. Maybe it will motivate the 4 seniors and 1 junior who start on the "O" line to play better.

No one seems to step up.

I would have bused this team home last night, went out to the practice field, turned on the lights, and practiced these guys for 3 hours.

Huge loss, didnt have their heads in the game, embarassed on both sides of the ball.

Good comments by y'all...both the coaches and players have to take the blame and yes, there is plenty of time to turn the season around. We talk about the poor road effort but we just came off of a huge road win in a tough venue. My guess is the players, despite the coaches' warnings, looked at UVa's loss to Dook and figured a W was a given. Now they have a week to stew and try to upset Wake- at least the game is at home. Hopefully, they will use last year's game as motivation for this game, which is the formula they should have used yesterday.

I too was there in Charlottsville for the game, and was utterly embarrassed by the piss poor performance of this team. I made the trip down in a bus also filled with Terps fans...and we could not beleive what we were seeing!!! When it was 14-0, I started feeling ill!! If someone is not going to get fired, then the threat needs to be put on the table. Also, when players have a sub-par performance, they should be threatened to have their scholarships withdrawn.

So...after Maryland got their butts handed tothemonaplatter by Virginia 31-0...Friegen is confused?? Hey Ralp,it was another case of your team not being prepared....AGAIN!! They werenot ready from the openingkick-oof....you could tell by their inconsistant and lathargic play.
The fault must be placed onFriegen alone....his coaching, his recruiting.....are all being questioned. Ithink it's time to move on and hopefully Debbie Yow will make the changes in the off season.....Ralph, you gotta go!!....sorry!

The coaches coach, and the players play. The players only seem to get up for games against games in which they are the underdog. Maybe Fridge needs to take a different path when playing an underdog. The good part is that we have to play Wake, Carolina, VT, BC, FS, and NC State ( homecoming game for State). We should be underdogs in 4-5 of those games, and 4 of the 6 are at home. I'll like our chances to go 4-2 or 5-1 the rest of the way, and play in the ACC championship, if we beat Wake next game. Don't give up on a great season just yet.

Who didn't see this one coming? No matter what UVA does against other teams as long as Al Groh's been coach they've played well against us. You would have thought someone would have reached to last years loss to them as motivation, but who knows if anything gets these guys up. It's not the X's and O's it's the Jimmies and Joes.
