Beer in the suites
You heard it here first, folks. Maryland says it will allow beer and wine next season in the 64 new Byrd Stadium suites.
I've written a story on this, and feel free to weigh in.
The university had a decision to make even after it decided to permit beer and wine (but not hard liquor) in the suites.
It could have adopted a Virginia Tech-style policy where suite holders can enter the day before the game and stock their suites.
Or it could have opted to restrict alcohol sales to internal caterers -- that's what Maryland did.
Some fans may accuse Maryland of trying to keep all the alcohol business to itself. The university said it went this route -- keeping everything in house -- because it wanted to exert maximum control over the sales.
You be the judge.

So that means in addition to $40K a year I also have to pay the university for beer and wine instead of bringing my own? What the heck, it's not like I was going to come up with the forty grand a year anyway. As long as they have a reasonable choice of beer and wine and don't limit it to Bud Light, Coors Light, and Miller Lite it should not be a big deal. I have no problem with the university exercising control over alcohol in the stadium.

finally......but the timing may be too late. many were reluctant to give up the tailgating that is the hallmark of college football in order to justify the mega $$ of the suites. Tailgating = alcohol.
Now with the economy heading towards the worst recession in memory, i think this "concession" to allow beer and wine may be just late enough to not enough to spur sales.

I honestly don't get why anybody would go to the games at those prices. But then I suppose Hank Poulson needs something to do on Saturdays...

So if you pay enough you can drink at the game? Is that the message here?
