Looking doubtful for Steffy
No definitive word yet, but it’s looking increasingly like quarterback Jordan Steffy won’t start at Middle Tennessee State on Saturday.
The math simply isn’t in his favor.
He hasn’t practiced since the Delaware game due to injury, and offensive coordinator James Franklin says it’s highly questionable he’ll practice Wednesday. Franklin says he thinks coach Ralph Friedgen is generally reluctant to start a player who still can’t practice the Wednesday before a game.
Franklin said Steffy wanted to practice Monday but that he wasn’t physically ready. The quarterback’s attitude is a big reason the coaches like him so much.
Maryland has kept Steffy from the media since he injured his thumb in the Delaware game. We're still waiting for the X-ray results.
Friedgen said he didn’t want to subject the quarterback to media scrutiny after two interceptions (and some vocal displeasure by the home fans) against Delaware. I don’t doubt the coaches’ motives, but wonder if their strategy is helpful to Steffy or not.
If Steffy had been available to be interviewed Tuesday, the media would have written one story containing Friedgen’s comments about Steffy -- and Steffy’s comments about himself.
Since Steffy wasn’t available, the media wrote about Friedgen’s comments one day and now will focus on Steffy’s comments when he’s available the next day (Wednesday).
It may have been better for Maryland to get it all over with as quickly as possible -- instead of prolonging the drama -- and let the media and the team and the kid move on.

Comments
Steffy can' throw an accurate long pass. Hayward-Bay is Maryland's biggest offensive threat but he is no threat without a QB who has the arm strength and accuracy to hit him long.

Thank God Steffy won't be playing this weekend.
Sorry, Fridge, but even after your tearful defense of your "son" I, and the thousands of other Terps fans, will still boo the worst QB on our roster every time you put him on the field.
I hope the Maryland brass heard the comments on ESPN U about how their crew couldn't believe Friedgen's choice at QB.
Time to start working on that short list of candidates!

Jordan Steffy can throw just as accurate of a deep ball as chris turner. I am not a big Steffy fan but I am sick of people booing him and being so in love with Chris Turner. Turner had two good games last year and was awful in more. He came in and threw 3 passes saturday 2 of which were way high and wide. Chris Turner is not the answer!

Rick,
I hope you mean a short list of coaches!! If by this Ralph has shown us progress in the program and a commitment to put the best player on the field then it's tome Debbie Yow search for a new coach because it will only get worse!!

Real nice, Rick. Yeah, let's boo a 22-year old who tries his best every day, has battled ridiculous injuries, and strives to build community centers for kids. Boooo, hissss.
I don't think he's MD's best option at QB right now either, but I'm not booing college athletes. And please don't give the old standby, "I buy a ticket, I have the right to boo." You know, you have the right to run over jaywalkers, but you don't actually do it, do you? Come on, this is a college kid.
Show some class. You are what gives Maryland fans the bad reputation.

Adam,
You try going into a game cold turkey and see how you throw the ball. We'll see this week how Turner does.
And for Fridge to tell people to layoff Steffy; then won because your welcome party is long gone. Season ticket holders want a winner and it has been 3 years of average football with Fridge. Sorry but Fridge has lost alot of support. This is no way to sell luxury suites; is it?

No offense, I luv you Coach but bench Steffy. He is just not very good.

Steffy is the classic great practice player who comes apart in game situations. Turner appears to be the opposite.

Sorry Hugh but I don't think Steffy was recruited because he was a carpenter or for his civic duties, he was recruited to be a quarterback. As far as the boo's go, I don't agree with that either but that comes from frustration from a program that never shows consistant progress. Every year we are told that things will be better in both football and basketball and every year Maryland is an also-ran. It's way past time for rebuilding, this program should be stable and moving upward and it's not and that won't sell tickets or bring in top quality players.

Hugh,
The fans have made it clear who they are booing. That would be one of the most over paid football coaches in america, pro or college. Ralph Friedgen is a very self righteous coach who is now moving this team toward long term mediocrity. The Jordan Steffy incident is only the latest example.
Top recruits are choosing other schools over Maryland simply because they do not want to play for the fridge. It has nothing to do with facilities. So, who shoulkd be on the "short list" for the next football coach at The University of Maryland?
FYI, Pedestrians ALWAYS have the right of way, jay-walking or not.

I've seen it reported elsewhere that Steffy has a ligament tear that pulled away from the bone and is going to be out at least three weeks. Any additional info for the readers here that you can get for us?

Hugh - When you play 1-A football, and you don't perform well, you are going to get booed. That's what happens everywhere, and it should continue.
To treat these men with the "oh, but he gave it such a good try" or "I bet he's a nice boy in class, too bad about the killer interception" is such a load of political correctness crap.
Go attend a game at a real school, a SEC school, and you will see how the fans treat their team. They love them when they win, and they boo them when they lose.
Also, you can think of the booing in another way. College is a time when these men are supposed to be preparing for their careers. If you come in to school as a highly rated quarterback, then your hopes are to refine your skills in college, and continue playing in the pros. Thus, you have to go through the boos and the cheers just like any professional player would to get you ready. Otherwise, the first time the player encounters difficulty in the pros, he will implode (Ryan Leaf, for example).
Tom - yes I meant HC candidates. Fridge did a nice job with Vanderlinden's players, and has proven that he can be an effective OC, but he can not handle the big job.

i think as soon as the season is over maryland should make a strong run at a young coach with a big name. maybe ship holts son of lou holts

I can't bring myself to boo college athletes either, and I was really hoping that Steffy would prove everyone wrong. But he looked the same as last year. He "only" had 2 INT's (I didn't understand that spin) but several times he was indecisive and forced throws that could have been picked. And although 2 of Turner's passes were high, he quickly made the right read on both of those, no indecision. It's like trying to hit a jump shot the first time you touch the ball after sitting the bench for most of the game. His accuracy will improve with more reps and time to mentally prepare.

Hey Rick - how many of Vanderlinden's players were on the 2006 team? And how come Vanderlinden couldn't coach the ones he had to a winning record? Fridge may not lead the Terps to the Promised Land but it's long past time to stop beating that drum about his predecessor. Ralph coached the team to consecutive bowl games following the last two seasons for the first time since - oh, that's right, since he did it three years in a row with Vanderlinden's recruits. (Are you sure he didn't recruit anyone that played on those teams?) Before that you have to go back to 1985 with the last of Bobby Ross's consecutive conference championship teams.
Overall I am not satisfied with the performance of the team for the past several years, but it's still worlds better than it was under Krivak, Duffner, and Vanderlinden.

Does Ralph want to win or just look good? Why do you start Steffy and why would you ever thing about playing they other kid? When the other gets in the game, everyone knows he is going to run the ball. I thought we were going to see something new this YEAR! The new home game, I'll go to see a PEE-WEE football game. Which is real FOOTBALL!

Jack, It seems that people have forgotten the real success of the Fridge's coaching....He had an offensive and defense co-ordinater Blackney and Taffe and when they left the program it fell to what we are seeing now. I surely hope we haven't forgotten the play calling from last year especially, just a masterpeice of junk!! The knock on the Fridge when he was here with Bobby Ross was that he was too conservative and he hasn't changed a bit and neither will this program until he's gone.
Posted by: Tom | September 5, 2008 1:31 AM
Tom - I agree that the DC and OC can play a large part of the success of any HC. That is probably the greatest measure of a head coach in college, finding the right assistants. For that reason I won't be surprised to see an improvement in the Terps recruiting and offensive play with the return of Franklin. Yes, Fridge will get some of the credit, since he is the top guy, and he should at least get credit for bringing back the right man, if that happens. I'm not convinced that Cosh is the right man to maximize the talent the Terps have on defense.
But the point still remains that the team performed better with the staff that Friedgen had in place in 2001 than at any point in the 4 years Vanderlinden was head coach, regardless of who recruited which players.
