Quarterback controversy back on

Coach Ralph Friedgen won't commit to starting quarterback Jordan Steffy in Saturday’s game at Middle Tennessee State, which means Maryland's on-again, off-again quarterback controversy is back on.

Part of the concern is Steffy's health. The graduate student, who regained the job in the preseason that he lost when he suffered a concussion last year, injured his thumb in Saturday's 14-7 season-opening victory against Delaware.

The thumb is to be X-rayed tomorrow. "He’d have trouble holding the ball right now," Friedgen told reporters this afternoon in a conference call.

Asked if Steffy would be the starter is he is declared healthy, Friedgen replied: "I haven't made that decision yet."

I’ll have more on this in a story a bit later on...

I have not been able to find anyone who thinks Steffy should start, except the 2 coaches. Fans were chanting "we want Turner" throughout the entire game in my section.

Turner is no superstar, but at least he can compete in the ACC, which Steffy cannot. With our line, running game and Heyward-Bey, we can have a very good offense if we have a competent QB.

Jeff - next time you speak to Fridge and/or Franklin, can you get their thoughts on using the option? We have not used it consistently since McBrien left, and it was very successful then. Our offense has never been the same since.

Why is tubby the only one who can't see Steffy sucks? It's mindboggling.

As a Terps season ticket holder, i am embarrassed at the actions of some of my fellow "fans"...how can you boo a college kid like that ?! its pathetic-its not like he's some high-priced pro QB. the way Steffy was treated yesterday was horrible-much worse then the way he played. i especially didn't understand the booing after his 2nd INT, since that actually worked out well for us. it was 4th and long at about the 30. incompletion, they get it in decent field position. instead they got at their own 2.

If the Terps are to have an above average season, which I believe may be within their grasp, then Friedgen must take this opportunity to get Turner back in the starting lineup and leave him there. Period.

Steffy is ineffective getting the ball downfield on long strikes, something the team must be able to do to prevent opposing DBs from cheating up on the line. Portis hasn't shown the ability, either, and at this point appears to be a glorified running back.

That's not to say that those two can't be valuable in backup roles, only that Turner is the best pocket QB of the bunch, which is really what the team needs at that position.

If the running game were deficient, then I could see the need of having a more versatile option-style player leading the offense, but such isn't the case, as the halfback position is a real strength of the team this year. No, a conventional passer is definitely the way to go, and I hope Friedgen realizes this soon enough that some wins aren't snatched away by mediocre QB play.

A major problem with Maryland football. Not naming your starting quarterback , at least a week before the game. Basic coaching philosophy dictates that a player that is designated has a week to get not only physically prepared but equally as important, mentally prepared. Turner didn't have that luxury last year for many games.

There shouldn't be a quarterback controversity especially with a senior who has contributed almost nothing to the program in 5 years. You have 2 other talented quarterbacks that are going to be with the team for 2 or more years you go with the future and not hope that an injury prone, less than adequate quarterback will blossm. Someone is going to argue that Ralph stuck with the kid to the end but in doing so he hurt the team, hurt recruiting and didn't do much to expand the fan base and sell the sky boxes. Maryland needs a firm commitment to win and not just compete fans are tired of rebuilding both in basketball and football. The object of competing is winning.

Whatever position one takes on who's the best QB to be the starter for the Terps, starting Turner in the next game makes sense because Steffy didn't have a good game.

The team is at a point in the season where there's still time to tinker a bit with the starting lineup without repercussions such changes would have later in the year. If Turner doesn't fare well, then Portis could get a shot too.

Bottom Line: This shouldn't be a popularity contest, but a determining which player can most consistently and efficiently move the team down the field (preferably with the capability, as well, of going long when needed or when the opportunity presents itself) and put touchdowns on the board.
