Evans asks out
The announcement today that Tyree Evans has asked out of his letter of intent to Maryland should not come as a shock to anyone who has followed this soap opera for the past few weeks.
Evans, the 6-foot-3 shooting guard who went to one prep school and two junior colleges while pleading down to a pair of misdemeanor charges, will likely find his way to a Division I campus this fall, just not to College Park.
Bobby Steinburg, his coach at Motlow State Community College in Tennessee, told me this afternoon that Evans came to his decision without any encouragement from Gary Williams or his assistants. Don't quite believe that.
While Evans' "decision" takes some of the heat off Williams for not telling athletic director Debbie Yow that he was recruiting Evans -- at least that's what Yow said -- it now puts pressure on the admissions office to accept Maryland's other big recruit, Sean Mosley.
That's the proverbial "other shoe" to drop if Mosley, the former St. Frances star, doesn't qualify academically. The situation with Evans and Mosley reminds those who've been around the Maryland program of when Williams had Donyell Marshall and Lawrence Moten ready to sign with the Terps, only to have them rejected.
Stay tuned. This soap opera isn't over yet.

Great, no Evans OR Maze. But at least we still got Hayes! Whoopee!!!

We will miss him as we are watching the Terps in the NIT next year. That is, if they make it.
Bummer...I was really looking forward to watching this kid. It sounds like he can really shoot the rock

Why can Donyell Marshall and Lawrence Moten go to schools like Connecticut and Syracuse, but can't make it into Maryland? Last time I checked, Maryland wasn't cranking out Rhodes Scholars like Princeton, Yale, Duke, Virginia, MIT, etc.

has anybody ever heard of giving someone a second chance? i am so tired of these mediocre teams maryland puts on the floor year after year. it was embarassing last year watching 4 other local schools go to the NCAA tournament and terps go to the NIT. the reality of the situation is alot of these kids are not saints (mayo-usc). the only thing u can do is try and guide and teach them when they hit campus. if they don't learn then they should be gone but if they do people should stay off there backs. if u want to win u have to put talent on the court. i am not saying admit anyone but if a kid qualifies to attend the school lets give him/her a chance to get there act right. to all those readers who where up in arns about evans attending UM. don't complain when the terps are sorry and don't complain when all the local kids want to go elsewhere and not the great UM. it sad time to be a terps fan.

The University of Maryland is known to have a high academic standard, and is recognized as one of the top public universities in the country, hence it's place on the list of "Public Ivy's".

Alot of people give Gary grief about his recruiting and some of it is justified. But they forget about Marshall and Moten. He recruited them, but the University rejected them. They went to schools in the Big East who eventually stole some of Maryland's best prep players (Carmelo, Gay, Greene) later on.

Blaming Gary for this is like blaming Ralph for Josh Portis last year. The coaches job is to recruit, after that the admissions office has to accept them. There have been plenty of aheletes who have verbally committed who never qualified academically so they went somewhere where the requirements were way less stringent,or in the case of UConn, almost nonexistent.By the way what kind of model citizen has Carmelo Anthony turned out to be?How about Melvin Aleaze? And if Mosely isn't admitted Gary should just resign because that tells me that Debbie Yow has withdrawn her support from a coach who brought this program back from the dead. There's a few pretty elite schools over the last 5 years who haven't made any postseason, too many to name.Either lower your academic standards or lower your atheletic ones, not a whole lot of schools have both. And no NCAA rules infractions and running a clean program obviously doesn't count for much either does it?Yeah maybe those kids don't graduate, but kids like Blake,Dixon,NIcholas,Garrison,Gilchrist,McCray,Strawberry,Joe Smith weren't going to get into college and get a degree if they hadn't played basketball either.Seems like they've made a decent living without one,and several have come back to finish theirs even though it wasn't in 5 years.

Are you kidding me? the right decision was made. I get hundreds of pieces of literature detailing all the positive things going on at the University. Why would Maryland even CONSIDER a kid with a checkered past? Your telling me a school like Maryland, which has a recent National Championship, is a great academic school, is located between Baltimore and Washington and has many other great attributes, including a great fan base, can't recruit better than this kid? That's illogical.

A second chance? How about more like a FIFTH chance after even more charges were discovered for mary jane and firearm possession?
People around here willing to look the other way because Gary was too lazy to do the work it takes to recruit players without this kind of baggage are pathetic.
Winning is not the ONLY thing important at the University of Maryland.
Gary should have done the due diligence, but short-cuts are his SOP.

So is the issue that he wouldn't have gotten admitted or he just had a change of heart?

give the kid a chance....i personally know tyree and he has come a long ways, all he wants is to purse his dream of making it to the nba. Tyree is not a bad kid just misunderstood. Everyone makes mistakes.

A mistake is the wrong answer on a test. Criminals chose to screw up. Gary is in a bind. We are now in an era of one and done thanks to the NBA continuing to use the NCAA as it's "minor league". These future pros are not usually Rhodes Scholars. Gary's forte has been to build talent but to compete he has to recruit prema donna talent. I would hate to have a college coaches job. Most schools are willing to look the other way for the all mighty dollar. Notice that even coach K is not getting the "great talent" anymore due to Dukes standards.

While I was willing to give Tyree 'a second chance' solely based on my belief that I trust GWs judgement, I completely understand the concern that anyone had with admitting a 23 yr old with such a troubled past. I wanted as much as anyone to see Tyree make us a better basketball team and succeed at getting his life together. But...
"misunderstood?"...please. Theres just too much there...too many "wrong place; wrong time' incidents. Guns, rape, and drugs...Oh my! If he couldnt shoot the 3, would you even consider admitting this 'kid'? Would you want him in the dorm with your 18 yr old daughter? The over-reaction by some here (and on the TSR board) IMHO reflect the desperation that many fans have reached in regards to our men's basketball program. Some are willing to try anything to win ...willing to risk everything. They want GW, the AD and the school to make exceptions in order to win. The same people are the first to openly criticize if and when things go south. There are those (fans)that no matter what you do, you'll never please them. And it seems the harder you try, the more they demand. So maybe everyone involved stopped trying to bend over backwards to please the the fan and decided to do what was best for the integrity of the University.

Just a few years ago we were national champions and routinely one of the better teams in the NCAA. Now we can not even recruit decent players. I do not get it. With the faciltiies at UMD and the conference they play in, this should be a no brainer. Get someone in their who plays nice the AAU and get back to winning some ball games

UMCP is a university, not a NBDL team. I would rather win with class than lower standards to recruit ex-felons.
If Gary can't get qualified recruits that is his problem, not UMCP's.
Posted by: mclean | May 27, 2008 9:11 AM
They never should have recruited him. Now they look really desperate and their current players are probably wondering what the heck is going on here?
Posted by: FID | May 27, 2008 9:38 PM
Hmmm, and you wonder why Gary failed to sign Joe Alexander who is from Mt. Airy, MD and is now a stud for WVU and wasn't even a highly touted recruit out of High School. Not to mention all the other Players from the BCL or WCAC.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Maryland is gonna STINK next year. You'll be lucky to make the NIT!! lol.

Gary Williams is a subpar coach. He is mediocre at best when it come to x's and o's.....and he is not a good recruiter. Many of the most talented high school players don't even consider MD. Can you blame them? Coach Williams looks crazy ranting and screaming on the sideline. His persona is wack!!! No Melo, No Durant, No Greene, No Beasley, No Dorsey, No Evans, No Gilchrist, No NCAA Bid etc etc etc. The fix......NO GARY WILLIAMS!!!!!
