Vasquez coming back
Many questioned Greivis Vasquez's decision-making as the point guard for the Maryland basketball team last season.
Apparently, Vasquez has made a smart choice when it comes to his future career -- an athletic department spokesman confirmed that Vasquez will be returning for his junior season in College Park.
Those familiar with the decision say that Vasquez thought it was not the right time to test the waters in the NBA pre-draft camps. I'm sure some of it had to do with the competition he would face from others coming out, but the fact that Vasquez listened to those who told him he wasn't ready shows some maturity that many thought he lacked.
Some Maryland fans might be happy with the fact that Vasquez will be driving them crazy again next winter, as you know he will with his high-risk, high-reward (sometimes) game.
Though Vasquez wants to prove he's a point guard, it's probably best if coach Gary Williams can find someone to share the responsibilities -- including on the defensive end -- that seemed to fall on Vasquez's shoulders last season.
Do you think it's a good move by Vasquez?
Do you think it's good for the Terps?

Very smart move. He is a talent, but he needs to sharpen his skills for the NBA. I hope he has a great year next year.

Who cares whether Vasquez returns. Lets hope its the last year for him and Gary Williams too.

Two words: Point forward.

Terp fans,
Here is a hint. Vasquez stinks. He would only collect splinters down on the "road" and anybody who thinks this clown is NBA material has been eating too much Turtle soup. I just hope you Marylanders are keeping our recruits warm and dry. Cuz they ain't going to UM.

I think it is good for both Greivis and the Terps. I don't think he is another John Gilchrist but his decision making not that great but what can you expect when he really did not have a consistant supporting cast. Does this means Eric Hayes is now the odd man out?

it's good for the terps. i expect him to mature and play a little more discipline. he has talent and hopefully he will be surrounded by more talented players next year than last. last year gist played great at times and other times disappeared. osby played very well and after that we had no inside presence. hayes went backwards last year. tucker was spotty. bowie showed a little in a couple of games, milbourne played well at times and other times he was lost. hopefully moseley and evans along with gilchrist wil give us quality minutes and maybe burney or dupree can step up a little. we need to have at least 7-8 players you can count on with at least 3 big men playing quality minutes.

It is a good move by Vasquez and only a good for the Terps if they can get him off the point. He proved last year he can handle the point like Ryan Leaf can handle locker room interviews.

Is it good for the Terps? Are you serious? He was the best player on the team, second team All-ACC player. Yes it was good for the Terps.
Yes he did turn the ball over too much last year, but people have to remember one thing: HE WAS A SOPHOMORE!! The landscape of college basketball has clearly moved to a more impatient model, but the ripping on Vasquez is ridiculous. For the traditional view of a college basketball player's development, Vasquez is tracking as a clearly great player who is improving every year.

I agree that GV will benefit from another year to develop at College Park. He just needs to play under more control. His greatest asset is driving to the hoop, but he will have to improve his outside shot to make it in the pros.
In terms of the point guard position, this will be a dilemma for Gary Williams. He loves GV's warrior mentality, so it will be tough for Gary to take the point away from him. It would be in the best interest of the team, however, to have GV slashing from the wing as opposed to having the bulk of the ball handling chores (and the bulk of the turnovers). For that reason, I would have liked to see Bobby Maze come to the Terps.

As a Maryland student, I'm furious that Greivis is coming back. The guy thinks he is the end all, be all of basketball, but he can't play at all. He doesn't have the talent or the intelligence and hurts the team more than he helps. If turnovers and assists were counted correctly, Vasquez's turnovers would heavily outweigh his assists (Handing the ball to the person next to you should not be an assist and a bad pass that is tipped by another player should not be a turnover for the other player). Greivis makes stupid decisions, takes stupid shots (i.e. final shot @ VT and ACC Tournament). The fact that he plays more than 35 minutes a game is absolute insanity. He shouldn't get more than 30 because he doesn't deserve it. Hopefully Gary will see that Vasquez is a joke and will bench him to teach him a lesson. I'm just planning on boycotting the team until Greivis is gone. I was hoping it would be this year because I can't stand to see people support him, but since he is staying, I guess I'll have to wait at least another season.

Gary will be in heaven. So many guards he can rotate in to make it look like he's coaching. So many different guys to yell at all game long. So many little guys so he can press and play man to man and run the flex offense. So many local big men heading off to other schools. Yep, Gary's in heaven all right.

Shane Walker is leaving....
As for Vasquez, I think he would be better served with at least one more year at the College level, off the ball of course.....

Don, I think this is the smart move for Vasquez. Regardless of whether or not he will or will not excel in Gary's style of play, he is often too erratic with his play and makes plenty of bad decisions. Those two weak spots will hurt him in the pro's, but are easy to develop on in the collegiate level. I would look for Vasquez to spend a lot of time making adjustments in the offseason this year so that he becomes a better prospect for the draft after next year. I also do think that this move is good for the Terps. Again, regardless of Vasquez's erratic play on occasion he brings a swagger and a confidence to the Maryland bench, and I think players really do thrive off of his energy. With some key spots being filled this year, this could be a year with the emergence of Gilchrest, Evans, Mosley, and Vasquez's presence, that MD might show some poise through the second half and really emerge as a decent contender come conference tournament time next season. It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but I say Greivis stays and helps this team another year, while benefitting himself. A better ACC and NCAA tournament performance has got to be his goal here.

This would appear to be a good move for both Vasquez and the Terps. His return will also insure avoiding the huge leadership void that otherwise would have existed with his and Gist's simultaneous departures from the program. Say what you will about his decision-making inconsistency, but he plays fearlessly and with emotion--two essential leadership characteristics which the other players look to and feed off.
With the addition of Evans and Mosley at shooting guard and through the further anticipated improvement of Milbourne and Tucker on the wing, he, Hayes and/or Bowie should have a few more legitimate offensive options to which to get the ball (and time to develop chemistry with same as Gilchrist will not be eligible until January 2009.) Also, an effective outside shooting team, theoretically, should prevent teams from simply collapsing into the paint on defense and force them to defend the Terps more honestly. This will, in turn, spread the court and open up the interior passing lanes. As well, it should also create space for the front court players to operate once they receive the ball down low.

I like Vasquez and the energy and fearlessness that he brings, but I also would like to see Bobby Maze as a Terp.

First off, if not a Terps fan get off the board-Duke Idiot.
This is a good move. With Evans running the point Vasquez will be able to do what he does best, slash and curl and hit the intermediate J. This will also allow them to go small against NC and Duke and provide some better match ups. If Gilchrist can be an inside presence and the depth they have this could be one of the better teams we have seen in a while. Mosley is the real deal and will be the Ice in the veins 3 point shooter we have been lacking. I am excited about this team.

This program is disgusting. Seeing GV off to the D-league would have been a blessing to help off-set the addition of a dude that got tossed from a JC team. Who cares what GV can do for the team...so what if he plays hard and with emotion, he plays for himself, and his antics on the floor are a poor representation of the team and school

Of course this is great news! Anyone who says differently is either the type of person who complains about everything or doesn't know anything about basketball.
He is the best player on the team and will likely be a first team All ACC player next year. Any program in the country would love to have Vasquez on their roster.

DJ Stawberry sucked at the point and then moved to his natural position at the 3 and carried our team. Nobody called for his head when we didn't have a legite PG and needed someone to step in. Vasquez will have a long NBA career if he plays his cards right. Especially if we have someone who can feed him the ball!
Hayes is screwed though. He has no heart.

One of the recent complaints about the Terps the past few years is the lack of energy inside Comcast Center. Granted the team has been average, but I think the comment from "Mike" on here, a student, speaks volumes. When the student body is "furious" that GV is coming back to school, for the reasons he mentions, I believe that explains a lot of the apathy at Comcast Center.

Vasquez is a clown... I think he averaged as many turnovers as he did points last year.
Don't get me wrong, IF he gets hot, he can make shots and put points on the board, and does make a good looking pass on ocassion. But he plays out of control most of the time, and is careless with the ball. He has a cocky demeanor that he just doesn't back up with good, smart play either. He takes ridiculous shots and tries to do way too much most of the time.
He dances around the court like he's Usher or something, taunts opposing fans, and then goes out and has 10 turnovers. What a joke. I can't wait till this clown is out of here. Gary needs to sit him on the pine.

Amen to Ryan's Comcast Center apathy comment. Memo to the students: You're Act Is Stale! Enough with the Rock and Roll Part 2, Hey You Suck chant. Be proactive instead of reactive when cheering the team and produce some innovative chants. You're in a top 20 public school so act like it! The same goes to Terrapin Club members who don't show up to half the games. The ACC-Big Ten Challenge game against Illinois was a joke...a half empty arena at tipoff! If you don't attend then quit complaining every season! Spare us the corporate, wine and cheese mentality and bring back Cole Field House or an atmosphere that resembles it!!!

How can any Terps fan not love the fact that Vasquez is coming back? He is the best player on our roster.
The turnovers and poor decisions from last season were attrocious. I understand everybody's frustration. But for UM students being "mad" that he's returning for his Junior year? Seroiusly?
I can't stand the fickle nature of many people. The National Championship in '02 raised expectactions exponentially, but do we have to have a hernia every time the team doesn't perform the way we want them to?
Vasquez is the best player we have. Period. He is a playmaker, but he is not perfect. He's 21 years old and he's going to improve. Stick with him (and the team) and cheer him on. If that doesn't resonate with you then perhaps it's time to jump on another bandwagon.

Was Vasquez serious about contemplating entering the NBA? I guess getting dominated by Kobe last summer made him think he was on that level. Anywho, you are all pointing the finger at the wrong person. It is not Vasquez fault the Terps under perform every year. It is Gary. The guy can't recruit. MD/DC/VA area is infested with top level talent and they all bolt for teams like Cuse, UConn, Texas, etc... My cousin who went to MD in the 90s said he will never be a Terp bball fan again cuz of what G-Will said in an interview which was "Recruits need to come to me". Umm what?!?!?! That's why they call it recruiting, cuz the coach goes OUT and recruits players to come to his school. Unfortunately, 1 National Championship, 1 ACC Tourney CHampionship, beating Duke once in a blue moon, and an atrocious graduation rate has bought Gary a lifetime pass at UM. Gary needs to go while UM is a top spot for top coaches. Honestly, how many more JuCo players are we going to have to rely on to carry this program? By the way Vasquez is hands down the best player on this team but he does turn the ball over way too much, but that's cuz he isn't a freaking PG!!!! Gary tries to make Vasquez a PG. Why the heck did we bring in Hayes, a true PG, if he isn't going to play the spot. Hayes makes crisp passes and doesn't turn it over. Gary thanks for everything you have done but in today's world of college hoops it is what have you done for me lately and a second round loss in the NIT doesn't cut it pal.

LOL at anyone not realizing what a great PG Vasquez is.
Go back to watching girl's soccer.

Just wonder who Gary is looking at to fill Shane Walkers scholarship. We need to replace Gist with an outstanding forward! hmm, wonder if that makes a another juco transfer slot available?
