Vasquez decision coming soon

For those anxiously awaiting Greivis Vasquez's decision whether or not to apply for the NBA draft, I talked briefly last night with his former coach at Montrose Christian, Stu Vetter. The two will sit down today to help Vasquez come to a decision. If he applies for early eligibility, it will likely be without an agent so that he can return to College Park.

Vasquez-haters out there might be surprised to hear that the sophomore guard who led Maryland in scoring -- and the ACC in both assists and turnovers -- is held in pretty high regard by some NBA scouts who feel he might be better in the pros than in Gary Williams' system. That doesn't mean Vasquez is coming out. My guess is that he'll return for his junior year to raise his stock and then come out after next season.

Vasquez has until Monday to file papers with the NBA.

Stay tuned.

i am not a vasquez hater, but, i have reservations about his ability as a point guard. exactly what position will he play in the nba? he has a average shot, he is very hyper and commits many errors of judgement in his passing, and shooting. slow on defense, i am comparing his potential nba ability here. another year is a must. but, i hope it is not at point.

Filing without an agent is a smart thing to do.. you get reviewed by the NBA, they tell you exactly where you stand, and what you need to work on.

He will return, and MD will be Sweet 16 Caliber at a minimum.

1 Vasquez, Bowie
2 Evans, Hayes, Mosley
3 Milbourne, Tucker
4 Burney, Gilchrist
5 Dupree, Walker

If he goes pro, he should choose the Venezuelan pro league. He will get skunked in the NBA.

If he's going to Vetter for advice, a man who has had a chilly relationship with GW over the years, it's a good bet he's gone. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, Greivis.

Greivis would be a fool to leave now (unless he gets a guaranteed contract that would make him happy for life, and that's not going to happen). He does not have a consistent outside shot. He's very reminiscent of Brad Davis, who worked on his outside shooting and eventually played for a number of years in Dallas. But Davis was a great passer with amazing court awareness.

Don, this is a welcome report given all of the rumors and heresay regarding GV. There are so many unanswered questions regarding the Terps roster next year. One thing that has puzzled me recently. Why are there no interviews with Gary Williams? Maybe I have missed them. With a lot of fans speculating about next year's team, it would be timely to get some words from the top man. Is Gary hard to get to?

I don't think I'd consider myself a GV hater but it wouldn't hurt my feelings if he decides to shove off early. And for what it's worth, he'll get eaten alive in the NBA. In my opinion, he's not got the talent to make a career there.

Bob B: Gary Williams doesn't usually comment on rumors. If Vasquez decides to declare for the draft, even without hiring an agent, I'm sure GW will share his thoughts.

I don't appreciate being called a Vasquez hater either. But he's left himself open to criticism. His inability to lead the team in pressure situations (Hayes too) is obvious. Wouldn't be sorrow to see him go and Hayes transfer. But who is Vasquez kidding. No NBA is going to draft him.

Vasquez isn't going anywhere. He's not first-round material.

To make the grade in the NBA, you have to do at least something, even if it's one thing, exceptionally well. There's not one aspect of his game that's special, except for his exceptional inconsistency.
Vasquez commits far too many turnovers and his shot selection needs an upgrade.

There's only one position in the NBA that suits him, shooting guard, and he has spent most of his college career playing the point. He only exhibits average 3-point shooting ability.

Although I had very serious reservations about GV at the beginning of the season he made me eat my words. I've never seen anyone improve that much over a season. That points to an incredible work ethic and desire to improve. I hope he stays and feel has a lot of yet unfulfilled potential.

The only place GV is playing pro ball is in Europe. The NBA? LOL.

Don,

Thanks for the report. I am so CONFUSED right now. Bobby Maze appears on the cover of Inside the Shell magazine and now he is going elsewhere. Did Tyree Evans take his place? The Terrence Jennings thing bugs me out too. Is it an available scholarship thing? Did Gary assume someone will tranfer (Collins, Fofana, etc...)? We all give Gary such a hard time for recruiting. It looks like he is bringing top notch talent to the table and then it falls apart. Does the administration at UMD reject these players? How does this lineup sound:

1. Bobby Maze, Hayes
2. Tyree Evans, Sean Moseley
3. Greivis Vasquez, Milbourne
4. Terrence Jennings
5. Gus Gilchrist

I guess we will wonder what might have been....

i sense that vasquez won't get to ball-hawk & lose alot of his stats when the new recruits come in. his stock probably would dip 'o9 unless he had a monster year. in that regard applying for the draft is a solid idea, just beware of the promises from GM's. his game needs a lot of work, and gary williams' style & decisions don't seem to do alot for its players. i am not a fan of vasquez's game but good luck.

I can't wait for him to leave, the sooner the better. I was not so pleasantly suprised that Gary let him get away with being such a hot dog...there is no room for that on the Terps...we are in the business of winning games not wining.

HAHAHA sweet 16 calibur??? Are you kidding me? The Terps are in for a rough couple of years.. They'll be lucky to make it out of the first couple rounds of the NIT again next year. There are too many guards, and not enough back court players for this to be an effective lineup. Who's the big man? Dupree? He only played like 20 minutes all last season.

Vasquez is selfish, out of control, cocky, and turnover prone. He can score if he gets hot, but PLEASE, you can't be serious about him going to the NBA. I don't understand why Gary put up with his crap all season.
