Hayes thinking about transferring?

This is for reader '?????' and others who question where I am getting my information about Eric Hayes.

While I have only been covering this Maryland team since the middle of last season, I have been around the program since 1985, meaning that I have a few sources left among those who are close to the team.

Actually, it's pretty logical to figure out. Unless Greivis Vasquez leaves, or Sean Mosley and Tyree Evans don't pan out (academically or on the court), there don't seem to be a lot of minutes left for Hayes in next season's backcourt. Unless the ankle sprain he suffered in early January affected him more than he let on, Hayes showed that he has some limitations in terms of being a top-flight ACC guard.

Hayes is just letting the dust settle to see how many guards wind up in College Park for next season. His father Kendall, who coached Hayes in high school, has told several people around the program that if Bobby Maze becomes a Terrapin, Hayes will look elsewhere. With the signing of Evans, Vasquez trying to decide about turning pro and Maze a question mark academically, Hayes is holding a couple of cards himself.

The next few weeks should clarify things.

And as for calling Cliff Tucker a shooting guard, as I used to tell my son's basketball coach when he was playing that position as a 10-year old, you have to be able to shoot to be a shooting guard. So until I see otherwise, I consider Tucker a small forward.

Comments

I have no sources inside the MD program, but assuming everyone comes back and arrives as we are told, Hayes would be an idiot to stick around.

What would he be the 7th guard?

This is a mistake, Hayes is one of our best players. I dont care who we are bringing in, they havent dont anything yet.

Hayes is 2 steps slow and quicker guards went by him like he was standing in concrete. He can't create his own shot off the dribble , he has a decent set shot but like you saw during the season he completely disappears for very long periods of time. If williams was satisfied with him he wouldn't keep recrutiing guards. His best move would be to transfer .

Hayes was the only player on the team with any basketball IQ at all. He's the only player Gary has had since Blake, Nicholas, and Dixon left with any understanding for the game. Typical...because he's a white guard, he's seen as too slow, not quick enough, cant get his own shots. The point guards job is to create for others. How long did it take for Ty Lawson to come back from his high ankle sprain this season??? Hayes came back and played, and played out of position. You're going to look slow when youre out of position and hurt.

Does anyone else find it crazy that Vasquez is even considering going pro?? I mean I like the guy but I can't see him being drafted, hope he doesn't get some bad info.

Tucker is a PG and every team that recruited him, other then Maryland had him as a point.

He's not a 2G or a SF, try again.

Hayes should leave

Wow. I can't believe you would write something like that about Cliff Tucker. He showed the most promise of any Terp freshman this year, and you ding him as not being able to shoot. Did you notice how short a leash Gary had with him? He probably felt as though he wasn't allowed to shoot. Also, he's a freshman who could actually improve. By the way, I'm tired of defending you to my fellow Terp suppporters. If your logic holds, I would say that until I see otherwise, I won't consider you a writer until I see some decent writing.

bob lancione is correct. hayes can't create off the dribble and can only shoot off screens. he is slow on defense, especially acc play. he is our best pure shooter, so i wouldn't mind him coming off the bench as a spark like he did against north carolina.

About Vasquez going pro....you need to hit the iron while it's hot, and it's as cold as a witch's tit right now. On one hand, I like the guy's spirit, but he needs AT LEAST one more year at MD to be NBA-viable.

In general, I think we (MD) are going to do pretty well next yr, all things considered (unexpectedly well). This kid Mosely sounds pretty good, and tyree evans sounds pretty solid as well. That makes 3 eventual possibly projected NBA guys--(that's the recipe for NCAA success--if you have 3 NBA guys on one team u will go far in the tournament.)

But on the other hand, vasquez and tyree evans are only here for 1 yr...so it needs to get done in 1 yr? Sounds kinda far-fetched.

It is, in fact, weird they all play kind of the 2 guard, but the the way i look at it is that hell with it, somebody (greives) can play the point, and there are minutes to go around for everyone. We just have to play a 3 guard set, at least until gilchrest gets available. Hayes is definitely gone if bobby maze qualifies academically. It's OK, I just hope this maze guy can dribble a damn basketball. I looked him up on espn, and he only got a 40 score, unless I am mistaken...

"This is a mistake, Hayes is one of our best players."

HAHAHA - are we watching the same games? I would love to go as far as to say Hayes is our WORST player. The guy is a polished high school player at best.

Have fun at Loyola College Eric.

Don - I won't take potshots at your writing or your sources. I will just be happy if you are able to provide us with as steady a source of info on the Terps as your predecessor. My only complaint has been with the frequency of the blog updates since Heather left. Will you be bringing us more frequent reports?

Hoops season is over now, but there is spring football, recruiting is an ongoing topic, and there are the other sports that don't usually get as much attention but in which the Terps compete, often at a very high level. Like they say, 27 sports, 1 team. This forum has often been the best source for good info about what is going on with the Terps, and I hope you will keep that tradition going strong.

Wow, this is getting interesting. As you said, everything should become significantly clearer to all of us within the next few weeks. Until then, I think we who do not work DIRECTLY within the program (unspecified qualifications of being "around" or "contributing" to the program do not count) should at least acknowledge their opinions as such and not offer them up as "gospel" fact. Let's just wait to see what happens to the roster, but please understand that Gary Williams understands his personnel and the team's needs better than any one of us. It is absurd to think that he does not have a plan in place for it and the team's recruiting (which is not the same as the energy expended, or perhaps not expended, in recruiting and addresses an entirely different issue.)

FYI, massengilltheblog, while being recruited, Cliff Tucker was expressly classified by scouting forums as a shooting guard. As you may recall, he was essentially the replacement to the Jeff Jones' decommittment. His height and athleticism suggested an ability to potentially play some small forward. And, like Adrian Bowie, he played some point guard as a h.s. senior, but only to expand his game and improve his versatility to get court time as a Terp freshman.

"you have to be able to shoot to be a shooting guard."
Ah Don, your blurb about Tucker proves in my opinion that you don't know what you're talking about when it comes to Maryland basketball.

For those of us keeping track at home, Tucker averaged 15.8 minutes per game, 4.1 pts. per game, 2.3 rebounds per game and 1.4 assists per game (with a 1.76 assist/turnover ratio).

So tell me Don, since Tucker is playing more minutes and scoring more points than any other freshman on Maryland (including Bowie) how do conclude that Tucker can't shoot? I'm not saying I'd play Tucker at guard, but I am saying the kid can shoot and that is why he was on the court more than any other freshman this year and why he scored more points per game than any other freshman.

This is what people are talking about when it comes to your writing and wild accusations. You just seem to pull them out of thin air. I think Hayes could transfer and looking at the situation around him, anything would think that. But I'm not making up headlines that say "Hayes thinking about transferring." I would think he's the most likely to transfer but I don't know that for sure. Maybe its Dino that's going to leave or someone else?

Until you prove that these "sources" of yours that have been around since 1985 actually carry some weight, expect criticism from us fans who don't like people seemingly making stuff up.

Hayes needs to go elsewhere. He is our smartest basketball player, but not one of the best physically. He doesnt use his smarts to better his game. He gets out played physically every play in every game. Hayes is not ACC quality physically, only mentally. Gary thought Hayes was his newest Blake and it just hasnt panned out. Hayes doesnt use any of his smarts to produce. He is suppose to be one of our best shooters, but when you dont shoot what good are you? I think the team needs a shake up in the lineup and give those so called veterans some competition. Gary is my man at coach and will be until he retires. Maybe he needs to sacrifice quality of student-athletes for quality of basketball resutls. I am tired of the NIT and it needs to change.

Maze is no longer on the radar so don't count him in the equation. Let's just say that the academic guru's at UMD don't want two exceptions (Evans & Maze) who will need to be propped up for two years.

Hayes to Loyola is a possibility but his papa thinks he should go to a more visible program.

Did someone actually post that Bob Ianconi was right? Kid must be looking for an increase in his allowance.

As they say.......Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

hey rob you should be a comedian i forgot way more about sports then you will ever know.See the TRUTH HURTS that is why people can't stand it .

bob, you really should start your own blog. You post more often and respond more often then the Sun's own staffers. Your posts are often controversial, and most definitely highly opinionated. You would need an editor for the occasional spelling and grammatical errors. And you would HAVE to warn everyone that yours are opinions that are based on some facts, but mostly conjecture.

You may have forgotten more about sports than Rob will ever know, but it looks like you've forgotten ALL of it. Not to mention that you appear to have forgotten (or never knew?) how to spell and use grammar, format a logical sentence, and actually make a substantive argument. The reason people are bothered by you is not that they can't admit the truth, it's that they have to wade through all your BS to get to posts/comments that actually have substance. The main reason I think you should have your own blog is so I wouldn't have to read your comments anymore. Then the 2-3 people who actually want to join in your baseless bantering can do so while the rest of us have civilized and informed discussion.

Oh, and about the Hayes thing...we'll see when the dust clears. If he does transfer, I will give Don credit, but otherwise this type of "reporting" in a high-profile medium can only be damaging to the kid, who (regardless of what you think of him) is a hard worker who loves and knows the game. Even those who think he's not a big part of our future should at least be courteous enough to recognize that he deserves our support. Some "fans" treat Hayes like he's a Gilchrist or McCray who hurt the team with immaturity and poor choices. Hayes has done nothing like that and shouldn't be chased out of town.

100% right!
From all indications, E Hayes is a solid kid, hard worker, and a very good basketball player who may be a little overmatched at the acc level. Having said that, i think we would have a better season w. Eric at the point and GV at the 2 than the other way around.

Allegedly Hayes is planning to transfer to the University of Richmond. Guess we will have to see if that is true...

go spiders!

hope it is true: he isn't acc quality

hopefully gary remembers how to coach; still can't believe he had hayes on the court 30+ minutes late in the season

Mason is in need of another combo guard BIG time next season

C'mon back to Virginia Eric, might even get a chance to see what the NCAA tourney looks like from somewhere other then a television screen

Hayes has the ability and the IQ, not the mindset. He picks up his dribble to early when pressure comes, where as GV dribbles thru or around. He penetrates to the basket, but does not finish. He plays it safe to often, which shows lack of confidence.

General Greivis played three at Montrose Christian and needs to do the same here. He's a better player off ball. Hayes is a true PG and a high ankle takes time to heal. John Stockton played pick and roll for years....

Dave, what do any of these stats do to dispell Don's assertion that Tucker can't shoot? He wasn't even knocking him, necessarily...just saying he's not a shooting guard (which judging by his 30% 3-Pt percentage, I'd tend to agree with). I like Tucker at the 3, especially with the glut of guards we appear to have next year.

I've seen D3 guards better than Hayes.
Maybe he get 10-12 minutes at Loyola behind Sullivan & Barney
