UM's crowded backcourt; Vasquez thinking NBA?
The signing of juco guard Tyree Evans has certainly sparked a lot of debate among Maryland fans about whether Gary Williams has sold his soul to the devil -- not the Blue Devils -- given the off-court problems that have previously kept Evans out of the Division I spotlight.
But what does it do to the chemistry of a team that wasn't exactly a cohesive bunch at the end of last season?
Evans and incoming freshman Sean Mosley are both shooting guards, and based on the reports out there, they are better than anyone the Terps had in that position last season. There was talk a month ago that Williams was considering moving Greivis Vasquez to the wing next season to get the ball in the hands of a more traditional, less erratic point guard.
With the anticipated arrival of Evans and Mosley, those plans have apparently been scrapped. That's if Vasquez returns for his junior year at all. According to Stu Vetter, who coached Vasquez at Montrose Christian, Vasquez is gathering material to decide whether or not to declare his eligibility for the NBA draft in hopes of going to a pre-draft camp while not signing with an agent.
If Vasquez returns, he'll likely be the point guard again, but with a lot more talent on the wings. Though Eric Hayes has steadfastly denied that he is contemplating leaving College Park, I have a hard time seeing him returning if Vasquez comes back unless he takes on a greatly reduced role as a three-point shooter off the bench. Adrian Bowie proved last season that he is a capable backup to Vasquez at the point and eventually could be a starter if he continues to improve.
One more question: If Williams goes with a three-guard set, where does that leave small forwards Landon Milbourne and Cliff Tucker?
Duke has used four guards to some success in the ACC. But look what's happened to the Blue Devils in the past couple of NCAA tournaments.
Then again, Maryland fans will be happy just getting to the NCAA tournament again.

The guard position is way over-manned. The article doesn't even address the possibility of Bobby Maze at CP.
Where are the Terps getting all of these scholarships? Something has got to give
Except the frontcourt, there really does't look like there will be enough minutes to keep everyone happy.

Well, I'm not too worried about the chance that Vasquez leaves. Only, because he's not going anywhere. Not with those turnover numbers. He is the engine that drives this team. He led the ACC in both assists and turnovers. Another year of seasoning should cut down on the TOs. Of course, not having ANYONE down low to pass to (until Gilchrist is eligible) will cut the Assists, too.
Sure, Evans and Mosely are SUPPOSED to be great shooters, and all. That's what they said about Mike Jones (Who?), too. Not that our MJ was terrible, he was a perfectly-slightly-above-average shooting guard, but he sure was never the lights-out guy we'd been told about. Too many guards!!!
The biggest reason for optimism is that Gilchrist will only have a few, short months to showcase his talents. Meaning that we will get him back for a full sophomore year.

How will we finally Know who will actually suit up for our terps next year cause where are all of these openings coming from?????

Vasquez in the NBA??? I think he smoked to much.... I would be happy for him to go and let all the new guys play.
I do not see him getting smarter. He can shoot, score pretty well off the dribble, but he also is a turnover machine. He might be able to play in the NBA, as a scorer off the bench. (like Juan Dixon)
Too much guard talent.....how is that a problem! Other "big time" programs have players in the waiting. Why not us!

At this point, lets be happy that that talent level looks like it will be seriously upgraded. Even if the talent is not equally spread through all of the positions, its a start. Lets get better players, who will in turn attract better players, and let the playing time shake itself out...

And all of this is forgetting Bobby Maze.

Vasquez is not ready for the NBA and won't be until he can reverse his assists to turnover ratio. Guarding Kobe Bryant for one game is not sufficient experience to enter the draft. If the 2 new shooting guards are as good as their hype I say let Hayes run the point and bring Vasquez off the bench the way the Spurs use Ginobli. If Vasquez can show that he has matured and is willing to make the good pass rather than try the spectacular pass to no one then let him compete with Hayes for minutes at the point.

Two things that really bother me, Don:
1)You continue to insist that Hayes is thinking of transferring despite NO evidence of this whatsoever. Maybe I'm reading into your opinions too much, but what exactly qualifies you to make these kind of unfounded assertions? You weren't even covering this team a year ago.
2)You claim that a guy who had more turnovers than assists this season is "a capable backup to Vasquez at the point"? As much as I like Bowie, he is much like a shorter Strawberry, which is to say he has no business running the point (backup or otherwise). Whatever you think about Hayes, I am fairly certain that Gary will use him ahead of Bowie at the point. IMO, Bowie's future is a tweener/energy guy off the bench, maybe a D'Andre Bell-type guy.
As for Vasquez, he would be drafted late second round if at all this year, so unless he ignores all the evidence to this effect, he'll be back.
The big question mark right now is Bobby Maze...

Not that he'd ever accept it but I think Vasquez's perfect template would be the career of Byron Mouton. Hear me out:
--They're approximately the same size.
--Neither is a great shooter.
--Both can contribute an emotional lift when the team needs it.
--Both are active on the court and can grab a lot of "garbage" for put-backs.
Vasquez has shown with utter certainty his flaws in decision-making, ball handling and 3-point shooting. I think the Mouton model might suit him exactly.

Don't you go puttin words in my mouth Don Markus.
While I would happy with a NCAA tourney birth, I think they can do much better than JUST getting there. They should be a contender, not a bubble team that narrowly gets in.

This is just very bizarre....Gary seems a bit lost. Maybe we can entice Bill Self to come here?

So what's the deal with Bobby Maze? Is he still signing with MD?

Where are the football posts? Basketball is over. Spring practice is in progress and nothing has been posted on it. Please, please, give us some spring football information.

If Vasquez returns? Not one person thinks that Vasquez is even close to ready for the next level. Waste of time to even think something that meaningless.

Vasquez getting drafted is as likely to happen as getting some information about the football program and what's going on at spring practice out of this blog. Did the Baltimore Sun forget that there is actually a football program at Maryland that happens to be in much better shape than the basketball program? Is Ralph boycotting the Sun now that Heather is no longer covering the team. Do you guys need directions to the practice field. For God's sake PLEASE (even if you have to make it up) give us SOMETHING about spring practice and the football program!!!!!!

Vasquez didn't just lead the ACC in turnovers, he lead the entire NCAA Div. I in turnovers! Let him go! He's way to emotional and erartic. He's decent jump shot doesn't come close to overcoming his faults. Bring the new guys in and focus on getting the big men ready. I know Gary is loyal, but for the god of the program pick up some guys that maybe don't always fit the "Maryland Mold". Let's get back to the Tourney! The real one!

Gary is smoking crack. Why take a chance on Evans when you finally got a top notch local guard in Mosley to come to Maryland? We now have 6 or 7 guards (Vazquez, Hayes, Maze, Bowie, Evans, Mosley, and Tucker who would be unstoppable at the 2) and no frontcourt. Well....at least Gary will be happy. He can subsitute someone every 45 seconds now instead of every 2 minutes and act like he's coaching.

To clear a few things up...Vasquez has no J, and he is still a better PG than Hayes. Vasquez turns the ball over with offensive fouls and difficult passes which are caused by 1) lack of offensive support and 2) poor decision-making. Hayes can barely bring the ball up the court against any decent defender. Conclusion, both guys are TO liabilities, but at least Vasquez will get the ball within the 3 point arc before turning it over, which gives us a chance since no one on the team can shoot the 3.

Somehtings going on that has not been leaked to the public. Eric Hayes must be on his way out the door, because Vasquez is not going anywhere. The signing of Tyree Evans confuses me at this point. Is Bobby Maze not going to qualify? Maze seems to be a better option at the point than Evans, and the Terps need a point that isn't so turnover prone. If Hayes goes and there are two scholarships available during the current signing period, why use them both on guards when a big body like Maze's JuCo teammate Ken Bowman is keen on the Terps?

Everyone seems to be knocking the idea of putting more than 2 guards on the floor. I for one welcome the change. Maybe now Maryland will move away from the tired Flex and go with a more effective set, like the 4-out motion or spread pick and roll offense. Vasquez won't go pro, and giving him (and the assortment of other athletes) space to create could make a difference

Vasquez had a higher Assist to TO ratio than both Sean Singletary and Tyrese Rice.
Most of you mouthbreathers would do yourself a favor and stop showing your stupidity to the entire nation by throwing your computer away.

GV would be good at the 3 position and create alot of mismatches. He plays the point because no one else will push the ball up the court.
