The deal on Gilchrist
There's been lots of confusion about Gus Gilchrist's status and after having it explained to me a number of times -- I'm a little slow, as some of you have often reminded me -- I will try to clear it up.
Gilchrist initially committed to Virginia Tech out of high school, but for a number of reasons, changed his mind. Publicly, he said it was because of the tragic shootings in Blacksburg last spring. Privately, those with ties to the Hokies will say otherwise.
In any case, he wound up in College Park last December. Because ACC athletic directors are sensitive to players going from one member school to another, they decided to treat him as if he were a regular recruit. That means he has to sit out one full school year.
In Gilchrist's case, that means he will be eligible after the fall term in 2008-2009, meaning that he will likely play around mid-December. That's how I understand it, until I'm told (again) that I got it wrong.

Gilchrist is eligible to play the day 1st semester classes end.

so how good is this guy??

Over the last couple of years we've seen several recruits commit to Maryland only to back out sometimes at the last moment, and on ESPN even, and never have to sit out one day.Why does it seem Md.atheletic directors are sensitive to this but it doesn't seem to be that too many others are. Also did he actually ernroll at VT and will he lose any elegibility?

If Hayes is a starter next year that means they will be no better. He is a step slow on on defense and cant beat aman on offense. Even Bowie is better if he can control fouling

does he also lose a year of eligibility?
Posted by: terpcentral | March 23, 2008 9:53 PM
does that mean he only has 2 and a half years of eligibility remaining, or does this year go as a redshirted year, which will still leave him 3 and a half?

also I believe under ACC rules he loses a year of eligibility so he'll start out as a soph not a frosh. Is this correct?
Yes, that's how I understand it-- DM

With Gilcrest switching from VT to Md. I'm curious what Md's plans for any big men to fill the voids left by Gist and Osby's departure would have been. I've seen no one else being recruited in preperation for the void.
Even with Gilcrest their should be another big man brought in, I'm thinking the JUCO route. Ken Bowman isn't what I'm thinking he's not even ranked in the top 150 recruits. We already have 6' 10" Shane Walker to develope so we need someone to step in and provide immediate help with our guard heavy team.
Any info on Eric Hayes & Dino Gregory transtering out.
Thanks
Appreciate all your articles.

He does not want to come to Blacksburg because of a shooting, but he goes to College Park?? That makes sense

Listen with the way gary has recuirted lately or should i say the lack of recuitring i have to see these kids play before i put any stock in anything that the terps say about a kid.He has let all the good kids from the baltimore area get away, mclinton miami, greene, syracuse, delaney, va tech, summers, georgetown, What he has recuirted from the baltimore area bowers, gregory, dupree, they couldn't play on a good rec team. cander medley was suppose to be the next coming of micheal jordan and you saw what he gave us, Look let the truth be told that patos's , dickerson. hahn, did all the good recuirting and since they left md has had to settle for 3 nit invitations 3 out of the last 4 years. Gary brought this team back from the dead 19 years ago and has brought md fans many many good memories especially the nation championship team, but to be honest he must now have to accept the heat with the underachieving program that he has put on the floor recently.his free pass should be starting to expire just like another coach who won a super bowl many years ago,. the boosters and debbie yow can't be happy with this once oroud team.

Who does he play most like, Gist or Osby? From the board material I've been reading lately, he sounds like another high-post big man who likes to pop open jumpers from 12 to 18 feet out.

Gilchrist actually signed a Letter of Intent. Since he was not declined admission by VT, it remained binding for a full year. In addition, I believe that the ACC has a 2 year sit out rule for an intra-conference transfer if the original school does not grant a release.
Rumor has it that VT did not grant the release due to the overall circumstances that had a bad smell to it.

Tonight Ohio U might be playing their last game of the year against favored Bradly. If so, Leon had a great career at Ohio U. Never missed a start, never was hurt, coaches and fellow players favorite. Though got beat by Kansas, led the game in rebounds against center 6-11 Sasha Kaon. Has the record [ of maby all time ] Has never, NEVER missed a 3 point shot, Perfect from the 3 point range [ check it out ] after playing in every game for 4 years. 30 + minutes per game.

When Mike Vick is your most famous alumnist, I too think I would rather go to Maryland.

To the person on Gary about recruiting, you mention how the have done nothing since Dave Dickerson and u follow that with Nick Caner Medley, busting on him, and he was a bust, BUT you need to check your facts Dickerson was the 1 that recruited him.

HEY J way waste time picking apart just one small item of what i posted . Why don't you take my overall posting as something that needs to be addressed by gary. i am right in what i am saying about gary why does everybody think he walks on water and can continue the down hill slide of this program . 3 out of the last 4 years doesn't mean he should continue to get that FREE PASS that coaches continue to get when they have been at one institution for so long. Winning the National Championship was a memory that i will never forget but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't continue to grow with your program facing Minn in a road NIt game doesn't exactley fit what i mean by growing a program.

I'm no Gary apologist, but "truth be told", only this year's NIT team was not recruited by Patsos (went to Loyola in 2004), and Dickerson (Tulane in 2005).
At least the 03 class won 25 and got to the 2nd round of the dance (big whoop).
Frankly, with only one real seasoned ACC-level player in Gist (Osby was JuCo and GV was a soph after all) this team wasnt destined for great things. Would have been nice had they stood up to the pressure and gotten a bid, but no one had them as a lock in October. Its the combination of yet another NIT year to go with the other 2 in 4 years that makes this seem worse than it is.

"When Mike Vick is your most famous alumnist, I too think I would rather go to Maryland."
Yup, go there where you can hang out with people like Lonny Baxter. Blacksburg also has yet to have a riot.

"Steve" must be a well-educated Maryland "alumnist"!
