« Minneapolis revisited | Main | March 22: Terps Q&A »

Ouch

After hearing stories the past few years about how Gary Williams had no shot at one-and-done players out of Maryland such as Carmelo Anthony, Kevin Durant and Michael Beasley, this little nugget was in the Syracuse Post-Standard Friday after the Terps lost to the Orange Thursday night at the Carrier Dome.

Syracuse freshman and former Towson Catholic star Donte Greene wanted to go to Maryland.

"Maryland recruited me when I was sophomore; before anybody was recruiting me,'' Greene told Post-Standard beat writer Mike Waters. "I was waiting for them to call and they called. (Maryland assistant) Keith Booth came up to me and was talking to me and I was on my way to Maryland.’’

That is, until Greene went to see Williams.

Greene took an unofficial visit to see the Maryland campus, but when he arrived in the basketball office, Maryland coach Gary Williams was with Julian Vaughn, a recruit from Vienna, Va., who is now at Florida State.

"Coach Williams had him in his office, talking for a while, for like 45 to an hour,’’ Greene told the Post-Standard . "Then he brought me in there and only said a couple words. I felt like I was disrespected and Gary Williams didn’t really want to recruit me.’’

Boy, that Gary Williams is a real judge of talent.

This story is a bunch of bull. If Greene made his decision because a head coach didn't coddle him enough during the recruitin process than let him go.Maryland's chances at Greene were never realistic anyway.

Stories like this seem to be appearing more and more the last few years. Many people say that you see HEAD coaches from Coach K on down at area high shcool gyms on game nights for big recruits but Williams is nowhere to be found. What does Gary care if a kid is one or two and done. It opens up another spot for another big time kid if you're on the ball recruiting wise. How many kids from Baltimore would want to play at Maryland if Mello would have played there? Would Gary turn his back on the next Kobe Bryant just because he may go to the NBA in a year? How stupid is that? The object is to get top talent to at least look at your program, not disregard it. Continuing to blow off local players for any reason other than lack of ability to do the classwork is why the program continues to suffer in many ways.

Since the championship year MD seems to like those with low leadership aspirations but still can play too a degree. It's like MD is recruiting what would otherwise settle for Duke and UNC's bench. GW needs to come down and remember the mission is to have an elite team.
So what if great players have an ego and work coaches nerves. This current style of recruiting and coaching is working a nerve of its own and it is called being average to bad.

This story sums up perfectly the sense of entitlement that has found a home in this generation. Greene shows up unexpectedly and assumes that Gary will drop everything that is scheduled because he has arrived. Donta has it occurred to you that if he had canceeled his time with Vaughn he would be disrepecting him due to your presence. No wonder Gary is not a big fan of todays recruiting duties.

What a cry baby. Coach 'disrespected'. Give me a break. Was Vaughn on an official or unofficial visit? Does Greene know? Good luck Boehiem, you've got a head case on your hands. Make sure you talk to him as much as you talk to the rest of your players.

so in 2 yrs "HOF" gary couldn't spend a few minutes speaking to this kid?

how many times did "HOF" watch him play? visit his High School? call?

sounds like 0 effort to me - the person acting like he is entitled is "HOF" not the teenager

It's time for Gary to move on. The Terps miss out on to many players that could add a major impact to the program. Plus, every year his teams find away to always be at the top of the turnover listing.

There is no way this story, as told by the player, is true. Anyone who knows anything about Gary Williams knows he would never snub a recruit like this! There are any number of reasons players don't decide to come to Maryland. For those hung up on teams loaded with blue chip recruits, please see what happened to our old friend Jim Calhoun today--even without Price, UConn should have been able to beat San Diego. Duke nearly gets the express check-out last night against Belmont. This was a very young Maryland team this year without enough big men. Imagine next year if Osby had another year of great coaching and development. Keep the faith--Gary Williams didn't just stop being a great coach and this will be a very good team over the next two seasons--gonna be a lot of fun to watch!!

You know, last time I checked Donte Green wasn't playing in the NCAA tournament either. You gotta have a lot of nerve to talk trash about a coach who has won a national championship when you can't even get YOUR team in the dance. Keep talking punk.

As much as it sucks not to land these players, we have to realize that Gary Williams really can't bring these guys in that he knows won't stay for graduation because of the 0% graduation rate they recieved. It sucks that that study that gave them the 0% didn't take into account the amount of money being made in the NBA by a lot of those guys and that most do end up graduating, but not in the amount of time needed to not count against him.

waaaaaaa! Coach disrespected me!! grow up...

This is inconceivable to me.
Gary Williams is one of the most energetic coaches on the side lines but it seems he tanks it as far as recruiting. Why are the elite teams always competing every year. Becuase of the recruiting. Gary needs to get with the program or get the ----- out

I agree that it's time for Gary to retire. His style is out of touch with today's athletes. Swearing at kids, grinding them down like they were Marine recruits, and then summarily benching them for mistakes is played out.

He destroyed John Gilchrist - completely crushed the kid's confidence - after a personal falling out. And look at the up and down play of Gist and Vasquez - one week they are heroes and the next week they are goats. Even with Juan Dixon and Steve Blake - who were tough as nails - Gary had to be reminded in the championship game no less to "calm down, coach."

Gary talks about kids playing with a "monkey on their backs." He needs to understand that he is an 800-pound gorilla. Great career, great person, but it's time to retire.

Cut Gary Williams a break! The only people who know what really happened during the Greene visit are Williams and Greene. This article only presents Greene's side of the story. For all we know he wasn't even scheduled to visit on the day in question. It might be that Willaims made time on his schedule to see him!

Plus you always have to be suspicious when any kid plays the "I was disrespected" card! Who does this kid think he is -the second coming of Michael Jordan? It could be that when Greene got into Gary's office he came with an attitude that suggested to Gary that the program would be better off without him!

Maryland is only 4 years removed from a National Championship - and he did that with a team with a core that certainly wasn't thought to be of players who were considered the best in the country when they were recruited. Green is obviously a good player but let's face it - the only reason that Maryland and Syracuse played in the NIT was that they were both having sub par years to begin with!

Greene has a lot more to prove over the next two years before he's earned the right to pass judgment on a proven coach like Gary Williams! Jim Boeheim is also a great coach. Apparently the real question with regard to Greene is whether he can change diapers too!

I've always wondered why Williams can't recruit local talent and really good players end up starring at other universities. I personally beleive that the only reason Maryland won a National Championship was because of the desire of the players to win it and had nothing to do with "HOF "Williams coaching. Nothing is going to change with the basketball program until "Garyland" is gone and the longer it takes for that to happen Maryland is going to continue to be an "ALSO RAN" Agree or not but the hand writing is on the wall.

You should check your facts before you go to print. Greene was offered as a soph but he wanted North Carolina and when they didn't come through Syracuse was his second choice. Maryland never really had a chance with him and it sounds like he is posturing for the folks in Baltimore as to why he didn't go to his home school.

Depending on how technical you get, anywhere from eight to 12 players on this team are (were) local players. Everyone but Tucker, Burney and Osby played at a local high school (or Oak Hill Academy in Milbourne's case), and Osby is originally from Richmond.

So the idea that Maryland is not recruiting local talent is uninformed at best and more likely an embarrassment for the liar telling it.

Players who never made it to CP, and the playa's were in the vicinty of CP.

Kevin Durant, Mike Beasley, Donte Green, Malcolm Delaney, Donte Summers, Joey Dorsey all playing D1 ball--else where. The Terps have got to get kids to stay home and play, if they want to get back to the DANCE.

Greene is full of BS....He was headed directly to the 'Cuse courtesy of the Melo Express and the palm-greasin pipeline of Baltimore AAU ball....

AND, as pointed out, Greene couldn't get his team to the dance....he shouldn't write checks with his mouth that his a$$ can't cash!!

Gary needs to go, he made his money already. Retire now and he can play all the golfs he wants.
