Minneapolis revisited
Two weeks ago, Maryland seemed on the verge of locking up an NCAA tournament bid. The Terps had a 20-point lead in the second half against Clemson at Comcast Center. The rest is misery.
Talk about free-fall, did anyone pull the cord on this parachute?
Sunday's announcement that the Terps would be a fifth seed -- in the NIT, yikes - means that the NIT selection committee thought there were at least 16 better teams for its field of 32.
Going to Minneapolis to play Minnesota Tuesday night won't exactly be the highlight of Gary Williams' career.
In fact, it's a reminder of how far the program has dropped: the last time Williams took a team to the Twin Cities, it was to play in the 2001 Final Four.
This won't quite be the same.

Comments
It'll probably be one and done for the Terps in the NIT. It's going to be very hard to go into Minneapolis and beat a team that is genuinely happy to be in the NIT, and has played well lately.

Don,
What are we supposed to do? Should we reject the invite? What about the ACC/Big 10 Challenge? Don't schools from our conference go to Minnesota? You are a Terps basher. Sometimes I think you are just trying to get a rise out of us. As far as I am concerned it has worked. What about going to the Carrier Dome if we win. Is that a mark on how far this team has fallen? I also wonder if Jim Boeheim gets the same flack as Gary in Syracuse. His team seems to have the same run of luck.

The last time Gary was in MN he blew a 22 point lead.
How long will it be before Terps fans can watch a game and not worry that a lead, no matter how large is not safe. That is the Gary Williams legacy.

Best way to solve this problem, quit choking and win some more games.

There is more psychological melodrama in the Maryland Men's Basketball program than there was in Billary White House. Gary has some level of self destructiveness !!!! The responsibility for all of the blown leads over the years must rest on the coach's shoulders. He's the adult. Those are just kids out there on the court looking for leadership.

"The last time Gary was in MN he blew a 22 point lead."
That was a painful memory, but one that has played out over and over again since then, just not on such a national stage.
I can only attribute it to something in Gary's coaching style that allows a team to blow such large leads. Can it be that other coaches can make the adjustment needed to fight their way back into a game, but Gary can't? Why not?
For all the good that Gary has done in resurrecting the Terp program, I'm afraid this (rather than winning it all in 2002 or the number of upsets of #1s) will be his legacy, blowing big leads. It is a shame, but it is time for Gary to go (and the person who signed him to such a long-term contract).

What a bunch of blathering idots. There is no way Gary Wiliams is going anywhere,in today's economics, collgewise Gary is in the top 5 that bring money into a program that allows Maryland to fund a lot of other atheletic programs. And for those of you who think kids won't play for a coach who screams and yells anymore,I suggest you watch a couple of Brenda Frese's tirades on the sideline. The only difference right now? She's winning,Gary isn't.And by the way,it's not Gary throwing up stupid shots or making bad passes during the meltdown either. It doesn't matter what Gary does, most kids are going to NC,Duke,Florida or Kansas automatically no matter if he stands on his head. And finally,Rudy Gay going to Conn. is one of the reasons Jim Calhoun is no longer there, think about that one.

Not sure I agree that it is time for Gary to go but I do think he needs to step back this off season, take a hard look at his coaching style, and make some serious changes for next year. (IMHO I think he could probably take things down a notch. The constant yelling and stressing I think makes young kids tense and afraid to fail.)

Well --- They won. They didn't blow the lead -- in fact, they came from behind in the first half and took control of the game.
The players love Gary.
It's sad to read these comments. It's evident that you are not truly Maryland fans.
Very unfortunate.

The MD program in shambles?
If so, then lots of big-time programs are in shambles. In the NIT, you have Ohio St. (and MD recruit-attempt Kosta Koufos, who will be in NBA maybe soon), Syracuse, AZ St., MN and other good ones.
MD had a commitment from Terrence Jennings, who decommitted and went to Louisville. So Terps went out and got Gus Gilchrist, who will likely play longer and better.
Terps did not get Kevin Durant, but settled for Vasquez, the second best player on his high school team. A better value! He will refine his game, cut his turnovers, and be even better next season. Watch him grow.
Sean Mosely is a top player anyone would love to have, coming in next season too.
The 2009 guy, Jin Soo Kim, is rated well too (4 stars).
The Terps had some down years recruiting, and are paying for it now. Since Chuck Driesel came in to work with Keith Booth, the duo is turning recruiting around.
The Terps plugged a little by getting seasoned juco help, but these juniors can be more helpful than the one-and-done high school stars.
The direction arrow is up for this program.

Anyone that thinks Gary Williams should be fired is an idiot. Do you know one of the main problems Gary has with getting "big name" recruits to College Park? ACADEMICS! Since the Len Bias tragedy, Maryland took several actions in regards to their student athletes, including having the hardest academic standards in the ACC (Even higher than Duke). So although Joe Awesome recruit might want to go to MD, he might not qualify academically.
Also, after the NCAA championship, Gary got big name recruits - Travis Garrison, Mike Jones - both McDonalds All-Americans. They just never lived up to expectations. That happens sometimes. It happens to Coach K too - Damarcus Nelson is a perfect example. He was the next Kobe Bryant but it took him 4 years to become a good basketball player and he was never the impact player his freshmen her that people thought he would be. Gary got people in College Park who were suppose to be good. But some of those players didn't want to get better and thought that they didn't need to work hard because they were so good.
Get off Gary's back. It's not like we finished with a sub .500 record. If this continues for 2-3 more seasons, you might have a case. He just had two recruiting classes that didn't live up to expectations. Things will be okay soon. He gave you back to back Final 4's, a National Title, and an ACC championship since 2001. Give the man a break.

Gee it only took a whole season for Williams to play his bench to keep his starters fresh...Can't wait until next season he may even let them shoot 3 pointers! Hal of Fame? In his own mind.

Hey Dave in case you haven't noticed even though Gw had a tough year I don't care if you get a four star recruit or a five star recruit, you have to change the game plan offensively to fit your team. Number one did you have a solid point guard this year and a back up yes. Two did you have a formidable front court this year, yes. Three did you have a backcourt that could knock down shots (including freshman), yes. MD has everything they need to at worst make it two the NCAA Turnament because they were in every game they played this year which is more than i can say about some of the other teams in the ACC. They have had leads on 95% of the teams that they have played, and that wasn't with McDonalds All Americans, they were just good high school players. As a coach in college basketball you may have one or two stars on a team but that last for a short time (four years to be exact) if your lucky. When that changes so should your game plan as oposed to the new players coming on board. Florida won back to back championships with the same starting five. the same game plan doesn't work right now for the younger guys. Thats why they are in the NIT as well. GW is a smart coach but he has to be willing to change as his personnel does for the better of the team.
