Feb. 24: Terps Q&A

Gary: Virginia Tech was a bad, unexpected loss. Miami, unfortunately, was pretty much expected. What's your best guess right now -- can Maryland regroup, win at Wake Forest and against Clemson, making it hard for the committee not to select them, or are they toast?

Don Markus: From what I saw at Miami, I think it's going to take a lot for Maryland to regroup. But from years of covering Gary Williams' teams at Maryland, and even watching them from a distance, he is at his best with his back to the wall. But given how limited his options are right now off the bench, and how erratic all of his starters have been this season, I think it's going to be pretty difficult unless they suddenly get it back as quickly as they seemingly have lost it.

Bill: How many minutes do you think Jerome Burney should be getting, and what should his role be?

Don Markus: Before Saturday, which is the first I saw him play any extended time, I would say that he was probably getting as many minutes as he deserved -- none. But after seeing some of the things he did on Saturday against Miami in terms of his athleticism and physicality, the question I have is: why hasn't this guy received this opportunity before? Williams said after the game that Burney has played well in practice the past two weeks. If that's the case, why didn't he get in against Virginia Tech when James Gist and Bambale Osby got into foul trouble? If Burney continues to play as he did in Miami, I think he should be the first big forward in the game ahead of Braxton Dupree and Dave Neal, and possibly the first big man ahead of Shane Walker. And I take back the line I had in the paper about Burney resembling Joe Smith in jersey number only.

Chad: Landon Milbourne seems to be a real X-factor. I feel the Terps are better when he's aggressively looking for his shot. Do you think he defers to Greivis Vasquez and Gist too much because of his inexperience?

Don Markus: Milbourne has quietly put together a pretty solid, if still up and down, sophomore year. Considering how little time he received as a freshman, I thought it would take longer. I think because of Gist's experience and Vasquez's personality, Milbourne does defer too much at times. But Miami was a pretty good indication that he's willing to take the shots if they're there (he took 16). He also has to know when he's not having a great shooting game (he made only five against the Hurricanes).

Greg: What do the Terps have to do the rest of the way to get to the NCAA tourney?

Don Markus: I think it's pretty clear that they have to beat Clemson and either Wake Forest or Virginia. If they beat Clemson but lose the other two, I would think they have to win at least one game in the ACC tournament. If they beat Wake and Virginia, but lose to Clemson, it might be good enough if the other teams in the running suddenly stop winning. But just as the Terps went cold, Miami and Virginia Tech have gotten hot. It should make for one of the most interesting and meaningful ACC tournaments in recent memory.

To me in order for MD to make a run they have to get to the foul line more. go striaght to the bucket like every game is a tournament game. Some one please put in a suggestion to GW to make GV a 2 gaurd, and let Hayes play the point. Since GW seems to sub out Hayes, Tucker, and Bowie, at least we wouldn't se as many turnovers. That may be becasue he is tired with the pace of the game running the point and trying to score, the end result is mistakes when a player gets tired. GW should let GV and Milbourne play the wing and sub stitute Bowie and Hayes at the point. Against the Maimi game there were several times I saw GV start the offense in the direction away from an open playeron the floor, so waybe we need a change at the point. He is a good player and I won't take that away from him, but he is not a true point in any sense of the word and by the time GW figures that out it might be too late for this season.

Gary's unwillingness to play young guys is coming back to haunt him. He refuses to play younger guys and has completely worn out Osby and Gist. He should have been giving minutes to Burney, Dupree and Walker all year. Stop wasting minutes on Neal. Neal looks like an overweight frat boy playing intramurals.

Eric Hayes is a defensive liability. Could you please explain how he gets more minutes than Mike Jones ever got? Please tell us how much better Hayes is than Mike Jones was. I think Gary has his favorites because not only is Hayes a liability, Vasquez has problems with guards blowing by him as well. Those excuses are getting old. Go to the the city and get some real players. And after you get them, let them play. Players coming to Maryland just aren't getting better before they leave. When will this change?

ACC teams have figured out that if they clamp down on Gist, nobody else will consistently step up except Vazquez, and he loses his mind trying to take up the slack and starts making bad plays. Unless Osby, Milbourne, Hayes and others can start pulling their weight, this team won't go far.

don, once again the terps have imploded at the worst time. watching a energized burney play, just frustrated me even more. i wonder when the light went off in his head or garys head to get him in the lineup. he looked like you said very athletic, strong, quick enough to be in the lineup a lot. sure, he will make mistakes, but, most young players do. and that is my whole problem. gary will not play the youngsters, normally, unless they already possess the skills he wants out of them. do you think his flex is behind the times, and should allow the team to do what most teams now are doing, run the court, and make their own shots to take. we have no one that can do that, unless you consider greivis taking his running bank shot.

Maryland seems to struggle against the ex-Big East teams. This year they are 1-4 and have played some of their poorest games. Do you think the style of play is different from the rest of the ACC?

Tucker should replace Hayes immediately. That would completely change the Terps lineup and add offense. Tucker at the 2 would be unstoppable! He's 6'5" and can play in the open court. I've blogged a million times about Mike Jones. Gary can't handle a pure scorer. Everything MUST BE CONTROLLED GARY'S WAY OR YOU WILL BE YELLED AT ON NATIONAL TV AND BENCHED!!!! DO IT MY WAY!!! Jones, the #2 player in the country that year behind Lebron James NEVER even started at Maryland. Are you kidding me? It's not like Maryland had a team loaded with scorers when Jones was on the team. Then when he did get a chance, Gary would nickel and dime him. Two minutes here, break a sweat, get back on the bench. okay, get back in, back on the bench, take a bad shot, back on the bench. HIGH SCHOOL COACHES know better. Scorers and players need to get in the flow of a game. Players make mistakes. Scorers sometimes take bad shots. Put your best talent on the court and stop pretending like you can coach by rotating players all the time. It doesn't prove anything. That's been part of the problem with Maryland the last few years: Oversubstituting. And why would a pure shooter come to Maryland and get yanked around by a coach who has to control everything. Let the kids play. Heck, it's not like the team's offense is all that with Gary micro-managing the team, now is it?

Sean, sure enough Mike Jones wasn't the player we'd hoped for......but, what about Strawberry, Ekezie, Baxter, Dixon, Joe Smith & Ibekwe for starters? All those guys improved by leaps and bounds while in CP.

after 1 1/2 years Jerome Burney gets to play..and looked pretty good! Isnt it odd at this point in the season Md does not have a regular rotation??

Hey Don I have looked at the recruiting for MD and in the ACC, and I have noticed that there are at least two to three teams in the ACC that have had top twenty players locked in for the last three years. All these questions and statements about MD mens BB ball can be sumed up by looking at who they are recruiting. If you look at the MD womens BB ball team they have at least shown interest in 6 of the top twenty seniors coming out this year, and four out of six players have listed MD as one of the teams that they like. Chuck D is the best recruiter on the MD staff and hopefully someday he gets the MD head coaching job, but ultimately GW has the final say in who he wants on his team. When it comes to recruiting talent, and playing talent maybe he should ask for some help from Brenda F because she has clearly out shined him in the recruiting process for the last three years.

I am just keeping the faith that this team will get hot just as quick as they got cold. They need one good win which there are multiple scorers. I hope Burney get some more mins and we can somehow free up Gist. The team needs us as fans to support them now... GO TERPS

I like cartoons.

If Gary was even a below-average recruiter, there would be no NIT issues 3 out of 4 years. One down year is accepted -- this is a pattern. Next year, Gist and Osby are gone, and its no players drafted (besides DJ very late last year) again. When it is so rare for Gary to lock up DC or Balt stars, its a problem. I'm ot expecting Melo, Durant, Beasley all to commit, but 1 ever for Gary? It's insane! How come this isn't a bigger issue? Gary recruits like a big time mid-major or poor team from a power conference. I don't get it. Wake is a tiny preppy homogenous school whose coach passed away in the offseason, and they have 3 of the top 25 guys! Please explain to me as I don't get it.
