Has the first down marker on the ground been moved in that first shot? It doesn't look like he made it to the post.

This first picture basically shows conclusive proof that Virginia didn't get the first down.
The second photo offers no way to determine whether he crossed the goal line or not.
A still photo is probably not a reliable method to assess these sorts of calls. Still photos capture a point in time, not players in motion.
That said, has Maryland referred these calls to the league office?
Frankly, I think the replay system is horrible. In all the games I have seen this year, I have not seen one call changed. They may as well not even have it.
As far as I'm concerned, this was a tougher loss than the Wake Forest game. Virginia is our big rival, especially in recruiting. It's going to be tough to bounce back from this one.

The pass interference was a tough call, especially given the 4th and 15 situation - put it probably was the right call - disappointing, but I can live with it. The td "fumble," was pretty clearly a td - no real issue there. The 4th and 4 spot - well, that is why Md fans have a chip on our collective shoulders when it comes to ACC officials. Horrible.

Cool pics. Absolutely useless for determining position of the ball. But thanks for posting them.
The 4th down play happened right in front of me (in the lower deck, under the overhang) and I thought at the time it would be close but that we got a crappy spot. When they showed the replay on the board I thought that confirmed it was a crappy spot.
The TD play looked on the replay board at the game to be the correct call.
They didn't replay the pass interference call before the crucial 4th down play but I thought the DB made a good play. Others around me thought it was the correct call.
Bottom line is, the Terps did not make enough good plays and the Hoos did. And both the Terps conference losses still hurt like the dickens.

Looks to me like, in the first photo, a) his knee is down well behind the 1st down marker, b) the ball is already out of bounds when it gets to the 1st down marker - it's on the white.
worst officiating ever.

The TD is irrelevant. I think the guy broke the plane before losing control...but it doesn't matter. They never should have had the opportunity to BE on the goal line. They didn't convert 4th down. Game over...Chris Turner is kneeling out the clock!
Just a frustrating night. Hard to shake that off.

Dan is right.
Heather you might as well take down the picture of the goal line situation. It's fairly obvious, even to the most deluded terps fan, that it was a TD, based on the ESPN2 replay that clearly showed the ball breaking the plane before the ball was dislodged.
But please keep the 4th down picture (blow it up even further for all the UVA posters on here). Forget the fact that he's out of bounds as he's lunging for the marker--HE DOESN'T EVEN HAVE POSSESSION!!!! How was this not taken into consideration by the guys in the booth?!?!
Also, props to whoever posted about the slanted, UVA-supporting commentary by those clowns in the booth...That was going on all night and I'm glad to see someone else picked up on it...

How come everyone is talking about just these two plays that lost us the game? What about all the key penalties that we gave up that didn't help? No. 27 had at least 2 of them on special teams, and we had that pass interference call. Not to mention Ralph's play calling on that 5-step drop (or was it 3?) that Chris Long nailed Turner in the end zone to kill the drive on the first play and give UVA the decisive 2 points..

The interference call on Barnes was questionable at best. Yes, he had his left arm around the guy's back...but he was there at virtually the same time as the ball and was making a play on the ball...also not a good call.
But even with the uber conservative play calling and all the outher junk...the Terps DID stop the Cavs on that last drive. It was 4th down. Terps would have been able to run out the clock. Despite all the other factors, THAT call is the one that cost them the game.
