Ralph on Rising

Any coach who grants even one camera access to what goes on inside his football program is bound to cringe at some point when it actually airs, but Ralph Friedgen seems to kind of like the new "Terrapins Rising" show on Comcast SportsNet.

"I don't think I'm the ogre they make me out to be," he said. "I hope our players understand that I do care for them and want them to be successful. I treat them like I'd treat my sons if I had them."

Ralph has learned some things about his players from watching the show, and said the exposure for them is good. A few of his more outspoken players -- guys like receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, Erin Henderson, and Christian Varner, who had an internship this summer at Comcast SportsNet -- relish the spotlight.

"I think it's a tremendous vehicle for our kids," the coach said. "Darrius wants to be in communications. Right now his grades need to be higher to get into that school, but I think he has a talent to relay things. It's tremendous exposure for him."

If anybody saw the episode where holder Matt Goldberg fell victim to Ralph's mind games, the situation seemed to be resolved the way Ralph hoped. In that episode, Ralph questioned Goldberg's ability on the field, and Matt took it to heart.

"I am interested in some of the comments, like Goldberg," Ralph said. "That was good. I was glad to see he got fired up on something."
