Logan-El to Towson

Antonio Logan-El is headed to Towson, he confirmed today. (If you don’t know who this kid is, either you’re not as serious of a Maryland fan as you think, or you have too much of a life to pay attention to recruiting). Long story short, he committed to Maryland as a sophomore, then, in a nationally televised, carnivalesque setting at ESPN zone in Baltimore, decided to go to Penn State. In doing so, he embarrassed the entire Friedgen family and gave Terp fans the final knockout blow during a recruiting season in which the Nittany Lions already grabbed the top recruits from in-state.

So, Logan-El said he is going to finish the semester at Penn State, but he won’t have to sit out a year because Towson is Division I-AA. He is expected to stay at left tackle. (By the way, the Examiner first reported this. Sigh.)

Logan-El said he’ll have one more meeting with Joe Paterno on Thursday.

“He’s a great guy and he just wants the best for me,” Logan-El said. “We’re going to sit down and talk. He’s not always about football. He cares about the person, not just the football.”

That is, when he can remember their names.

Towson is a good program and I hope he helps them. Am I right in assuming that other D-1 schools were not lining up for his transfer?

Let this be a lesson to kids declaring their pick of schools. Do it respectfully and without burning bridges. You never know what will happen.

wow Heather you're so clever making fun of an 81 yr. old football coach who's made an impact in so many young people's lives. Stick to reporting the news...

Hey PSU STUDENT,
I respect what Paterno has done there, but that program needs a coach who actually goes to practice. Don't get me started on the state of State.

JoPa does go to practice. After having major knee surgery, he has recovered quickly for a man of his age; and he was at practice in a golf cart no long after his surgery. So Heather, stick to MD football, where they are expanding their stadium to fit the number of people PSU had at the Blue and White game. That is a spring football scrimage for all of you turtle heads out there.

Heather I would love to hear your opinion on the "state of State"

Dinich, it's obvious you still hold a grudge against Paterno for dressing you down in that press conference a few years ago. It was a great day when you left the Centre Daily Times. We actually have someone to read who reports on football now, rather than whining about the actions of a living legend. Way to go, hope you're proud.

Heather, if you were that locked into PSU you would be writing a blog about them. I question that you know as much about State as you think. Whatever Joe does or doesn't do as far as X's and O's at this stage of his career pales in comparison to what he means to PSU and the community up there. If Joe delegates more responsibility to his assistants, then so be it.

Heather,

We love when you dig into Penn St around here. How bout an update of that 2006 MD Recruiting bus that headed up to PSU. It would be interesting to see where those players are in relation to the ones the Terps took. Example, Wujciak nearly a starter opposed to the Banji kid. How many of those PSU kids got the reps they were promised as freshmen?

Heather, If you think Paterno is an absentee coach, then say THAT. Don't take jabs as some perceived memory lapse.

Wow, such a typical response by someone who is very uninformed. He's at practice all the time and is a lot more involved in the kids lives than a certain 'big' coach in Maryland that you seem to love.

PSUStudent, worry less about what someone says about senile old Joe and worry more about how you can avoid a beating at the hands of angry, drunk PSU footbal players.

This was the first article of yours that I read and I was surprised by not only the article but by the response to PSU STUDENT. Objective reporting is what we need! The response shows that all your articles will have a anti PSU bias. So much for truth in journalism.

Why the cheap shots at Paterno? He's got 85 kids on the team and the names change every year. He's coached over 1,000 kids, and he does a remarkable job keeping in touch with many of them. And aside from his recent injury, he has been very active on the field. Your comments are out of line.

Heather, don't get you started on "the state of State?"

Yeah, they're doing pretty bad lately. Won the Orange Bowl in 2006, beat Tennessee in the Outback bowl in 2007, and they're a Top 20 team headed into this season. They sell out their 108,000 seat stadium and have a living legend at the helm -- a living legend who can still outrecruit 80 percent of the coaches in this country.

Maryland, however, is a much better program (roll eyes).

Sroka,
This is a Blog, not an article. Blogs are designed to be less formal and give writers a chance to voice their thoughts. They are not meant to be objective like articles.

Cut her some slack.

I wouldn't say Heather seems to love Ralph Friedgen either, that is laughable.

But again, some objective articles on the perceived mass exodus of MD players to PSU would be interesting to reflect on.

Does the fact that this is a blog somehow absolve you from any journalistic standards? Your clever little dig would be flagged by a high school paper. Grow up. If Paterno's forgotten anyone's name, its yours.

Heather, why the cheap shot at Joe Paterno. I didn't see you post any cheap shots about the fat man down at Maryland when Ricker transfered. I guess that is why no one considers you a real journalist.

Concerned Parent,

I think you need to get all of your facts straight before you go accusing the "angry, drunk football players" of doing anything wrong. It's a matter that will be settled soon enough and will have some serious consequences, but until that time you have no idea what happened. Just be thankful Heather isn't reporting on the incident, or else the story would be so distorted she would probably accuse the LEGEND, Joseph Vincent Paterno, of being involved.

Heather---
Nice dig at coach Paterno, didn't you do that enough during your time in State College? Fact is Paterno has done more for college football and his university than any coach in history so deal with it. When you have accomplished something legitimate as a journalist perhaps then you can start bashing people, until then just write the facts.

You remind me of a young writer at The WashPost who took a strong position. Maybe you've heard of Christine Brennan.

PSU is the enemy in these parts, plain and simple ... but up until last year, it wasn't that big of a deal, especially since MD and PSU no longer meet on the field (although, hopefully the upcoming bowl season will make it happen); however, there were a lot of shady and sleazy undertones to the Logan-EL recruiting season that left me with an extra bad taste in my mouth regarding PSU. I'm not blaming Paterno personally, but ultimately he is responsible for the actions of his assistants and his recruits who exhibited extremely poor class during that ESPN zone fiasco at the inner harbour. And because of that I now get a little extra kick out of every PSU loss ...

God MD fans are a bunch of sad sacks.

Sad sacks? MD has more intercollegiate national titles in this decade alone than PSU has won in their entire history (men and women's bball, men's soccer, women's lacrosse (multiple) and field hockey (multiple); they also recently won back-to-back national titles in competitive cheerleading) ... Maryland has an extremely well rounded athletics program (i.e., they are competitive in just about everything not just football) ... PSU on the other hand only competes in one sport, football, and its been 20 years since their last title --- That is the very definition of sad.

MDMAN you might want to actually check your facts. PSU has won 36 mens, 14 womens and 9 combined NCAA championships. That includes 6 this decade. Also, PSU competes in 31 NCAA sports. MD only competes in 27. And PSU's 31 doesn't include many club teams that win national club championships like the 3 that the men's ice hockey team has this decade (plus 3 runner-ups). Oh yeah we also have 25 B10 championships in the 2000's.

Please reply. I'm dying to see how great UMd is.

Thanks PSU fans for living up to your whiny-PSU can do no wrong reputation.

She made a crack about Paterno being old. Who cares.

Oh, and the person who was glad she left the local rag in State College. You're right, who would want to write for The Baltimore Sun when you could write for the Center whatever.

I stand corrected, I have slighted PSU's 6 national tiles this decade in men's gymnastics (3) and fencing (3) --- I knew there must be a reason why you didn't mention the specific sports ... how's that badminton squad doing up there in Happy Valley? too funny ... I'll gladly take MD's 9 national titles this decade most of which were in sports that people actually watch.
