Baltimore star picks Georgetown over Terps

Maryland fans are already pointing the finger at Gary Williams and his staff for not landing Mount St. Joseph center Henry Sims, who gave a commitment to Georgetown last night.

Mount St. Joseph coach Pat Clatchey tells it differently, though, and said today it was no fault of Maryland's coaching staff for not being able to lure Sims to College Park.

"It was a very tough decision," Clatchey said. "It came down to Maryland, Virginia and Georgetown. He just felt like that was the right fit for him.

"They (Maryland) worked extremely hard," he said. "They were active. I wouldn’t fault their effort at all."

Clatchey pointed out that Georgetown will eventually lose three of its frontcourt players, making room for an incoming member of the 2008 recruiting class like Sims. Maryland has already brought in Dino Gregory, Braxton Dupree and Shane Walker.

So the bottom line is this: Maryland lost a Baltimore recruit to neighboring Georgetown. Granted, it doesn't sound good, but if fans are questioning the effort of this one, Clatchey says don't.

"Maryland is very active and definitely pursued him just as hard as the other schools."

As for that other recruit people are talking about? I haven't heard a word about or from Jai Lucas. And just for the record, as of today, still no official cause of death determined for LaRon Cephas.

The terps were not even really interested in Simms - stop acting like we "lost" to G'town.

"Not even really interested" in him? Really? You calling Pat Clatchey a liar? I'm going to go ahead and take the word of Clatchey, unless "Paul" is some code for Keith Booth I'm unaware of. If you're right, "Paul," then it's a good thing Maryland didn't get Sims. He may as well go where he's wanted, huh?

My apologies by saying "not really interested" I meant he was not by any means a priority recruit. If they were really interested they would have known G'town was out in the hunt and wanted him. My thoughts - not Coach Booth's - are that since as stated in the article - we don't need a Simms type of player - we need a Quintrell Thomas, or save as many scholarships for the Montross Christian kids in a few years. We do have 6 freshman on the team next year - the scholarship limit will limit the terps "interest" in a number of recruits and in my opinion that was the reason for the lack of full court pressure on the recruiting front.

granted we don't do well against G'town recruiting right now as they are the flavor of the month, but your article (once again to me) implies that we "lost" against G'town. This happened with Freeman not with Simms.

Fair enough!

Just getting around to reading your posts about the spring game (great reports, by the way). Do they expect to have Green back for training camp, or is it still too early to tell ? I'm not familiar with fractured collarbones, and how long they take to heal.

Sims is a decent talent, but he's nowhere near what the Terps need with this ship.

Heather, have you seen fans bashing Gary, b/c Henry chose the Hoyas, or are you instigating? I haven't seen much outrage over this recruit, that's for sure.

The bottomline is Quintrell Thomas or another banger, not a kid that likes to float and shoot jumpers. He's a much better fit for Gtowns system, and most Terp fans know this. The Terp nation isn't exactly despondent by Sims decision, nor do we care about the Lucas fiasco.

If he were to miraculously become a Terp, great, but I think we all know thats been water under the bridge for 5 months.

Instigating? Ha! Man, I've got laundry piling up, an empty fridge, and actual work to do. I don't have TIME to instigate anything. I saw a bunch of Maryland fans on the Terrapin Times message board this morning questioning the effort of the staff, so I called up Clatchey to see how much effort the Terps put into this kid. As for the Lucas thing, I'm aware of the odds, but when you've got my job, you can't officially say it's over until you hear it from a reliable source.

You need to read another message board then.

What? There's another message board?!

Is that tongue-in-cheek, Heather? Terp Sports Report has about 300x the traffic of Terrapin Times. Terrapin Times might as well be the ADs board. TSR is the board of the people.

Hopefully Sims doesn't pan out. It is a loss for us and a gain for G'town otherwise. Regardless of the reason.

Front court was crowded when Wilcox arrived to. He blossomed just fine.

Yes, BI, I was being facetious. I do occasionally peruse TSR, and from time to time see all the love letters the posters leave for me. (Insert tongue-in-cheek tone here. Again.).

By redshirting this past year, Burney becomes a 4th big man that will be a freshman next year.

This is not like when MD lost Freeman to GU. Sims was not that high of a priority.

Heather, I always have your back on TSR. You're the most committed writer we have covering MD hoops.

Heather you are just wrong all the time. Stop trying to get ahead in the world by attempting to spread rumor about our basketball program. Your story last year on Eric Hayes was reprehensible.

I've played against Sims before -- he runs pick up at my gym. He's not a banger at all and he has a tendency to float out to the foul line-ish area to get involved. He's got a sweet touch sometimes, but he just doesnt have the back to the basket game that we've been lacking since the last 3 years.

Heather, I don't care what the putzes on TSR say about you; I think you are pretty darn sharp and pretty hot to boot.

Reprehensible! Big word for a monkey!

I'm sorry, "Gary Williams," but do I know you?

Georgetown is hardly the "flavor of the month." You must be joking! The Hoyas have owned the local recruiting trail for the last three to four years. Why would there be a let up after sweeping the Big East and going to the Final Four? JTIII has also been great at developing talent and I'm sure he will do the same with Sims. It strikes me as odd that some Terp fans hope a local kid doesn't have success or "pan out" simply because he chose a different school. Or they bash Georgetown's admissions standards when it's clear that Georgetown is a great academic institution. It's those types of "opinions" that give Terps fans a bad name. This isn't pro sports; this kid is in high school. He made a decision which he thought was in his best interest; how could you do anything but wish him well? This isn't an indictment of all of you, but those who give the rest of the bunch a bad name. Here's hoping JTIII and Gary Williams work out whatever the differences are that remain and we can schedule a game or three at the Comcast Center (however many it takes for Gary to consent). I'd love to see that; then you guys would really have something to be upset about. Go Hoyas!!!

Heather any chance you get us an update on some of Marylands other prospects. One's MD has yet to miss out on, Quintrell Thomas, or Sean Mosley?

It was obvious before and now confirmed that you are reading the Terrapin Times website and using it as a gauge for the pulse of Maryland fans. This is your first mistake! Nearly all of the intelligent Maryland fans have left that board. What you have left is a group of people who either don't know or don't care that they're being fed inaccurate information almost daily. I will not get into specifics but most Maryland fans know exactly what I am talking about.

Please stop using that board as any sort of measure for what's on the mind of the average Maryland fan.

Heather your just wrong all the time

Heather,

Please don't listen to these AIRHEADS. They are just trying to cause TROUBLE and are up past their bedtime. One question: How soon will John Beilein have Michigan in the Final Four. His teams always display great TEAMWORK.

Heather... Please stop waxing your forehead... the glare is making it hard to focus

Westside - Quit staring at me please.

No one should be surprised to see that the men's basketball program is in hot water for dismal academic achievement of it's players.

It's been known for years that Gary Williams has never been a stickler for academics for his players. He once castigated Obinna Ekezie for studying on the team bus. He yelled at him and said "What in the blank are you doing?"

I remember Steve Blake admitting "I just came here to play basketball".

Yes, Gary has won a national championship. The 'dark' side of winning has been swept under the rug by the media for too long.

Are you serious Donald? You actually think that Gary is the reason MD and GTown don't play?? How misinformed can you be. Gary wants a 1-to-1 series, nothing more, nothing less. Although, I doubt he even thinks about that anymore, as he was rebuffed so many times years ago.

Also, the "academic standards" don't apply to your basketball team. Are you really that stupid, that you think they are the same? Of course the standards are high for normal students. It is an excellent academic school. But the standards for basketball players are laughable. It's not an "opinion". It's a FACT that many players have been accepted to play at GTown that were not able to get qualified at many other D1 schools, including Maryland.

Stop spouting off about things you nothing about.

when will Terps fans realize that Gary Williams is just not a good recruiter? How long can you live off one title, when everything fell into place?
