Lane closings to tie up Conway Street
The Baltimore Department of Transportation has begun a series of lane closings on Conway Street that are expected to tie up traffic on one of the city's major gateways to the Inner Harbor for several weeks.
The full-time closings, which started today, will affect Conway, both eastbound and westbound, between Howard and Charles streets. The city said the closings for construction work are expected to continue for several weeks -- potentially causing backups during morning commuting hours.
The Transportation Department is urging inbound commuters to use Martin Luther King Boulevard to Baltimore or Mulberry streets to bypass the closings. It urged outbound travelers to take Lombard Street to Greene Street to avoid congestion.

Is this different work than the work that has already been taking place on Conway Street for the last several weeks, or is DoT finally getting around to reporting the closures? There has been ongoing work at the intersection of Conway and Charles Streets for some time, and the backups have been worse on Charles than they have been on Conway. For drivers coming from South Baltimore, I recommend using Light Street through that area, instead of Charles.

Does this mean that you can no longer take Sharp Street into Federal Hill to bypass the traffic nightmare on Light and Lombard Streets? If so, don't bother coming downtown unless you live or work here -- the traffic makes it so not worth it!

Traffic on inbound 395 has been terrible for over a month due to construction. It's a shame that there is construction on Key Highway at the same time - it doesn't leave many alternatives for people coming in from the south.
