State cancels contract solicitation for travel plazas

The Maryland Transportation Authority has canceled its bid solicitation for a contract to redevelop and manage its two travel plazas along the toll stretch of Interstate 95 in Northeast Maryland.

For more than four years, the authority has been planning to seek a private vendor to redevelop the aging Maryland House and Chesapeake House on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway. But earlier today, the  state abruptly canceled its request for proposals,

"The Maryland Tranportation Authority has determined that it is in the best interest of the State to cancel this solicitation" was the only explanation.

A call to the authority seeking additional information was not immediately returned.

Perhaps they've decided our hospitality stops are good enough and we can't afford to simply replace them? I'd like to think so. This is probably not a good time to be redeveloping State Center either just because it's dated. We must stop spending money we don't have, especially on wars we have no chance to win, supporting governments like Afghanistan's which are corrupt.

Naturally, why would the state government bother helping out Harford and Cecil counties now? They've showed little interest up until this point.

Both are packed anyway so why change? It makes money now so save mony Maryland.

If the State "owns" them, why not lease them out under a long-term contract in exchange for a lump sum and permit the lessee to redevelop the plazas in whatever way would be most profitable?

I'm OK with this. I didn't want to see an arms race between MD and DE over travel plazas. It was getting a bit ridiculous.

Per Pete's comment:

This is exactly how the RFP which was canceled reads.

I've never understood why we have such a nice rest stop off route 70. It's in the middle of no place and has a wonderful playground and an enormous building that could host all kinds of things. Wonder why my tax $$ even maintains something this nice. I always have wondered how many teachers could have been hired or emergency services workers. The building, by the way, is not even open, but the bathrooms are which honestly is the only thing that should be located at that location.

Anyone care to get the city right, it is North East. Two words, not one.
