CharmCard for seniors due in early 2011
This just in from the MTA website:
Based on card sales and fare purchases, MTA’s new CharmCard has been positively
received by full-fare customers. The reduced-fare CharmCard for seniors is in the final stages of development, and is scheduled to be available in early 2011.
When the Senior CharmCard is available the MTA will provide purchase information
at the MTA Reduced Fare Certification Office, at the Transit Store, on transit vehicles, and through direct mail.

Funny you should mention this -- I was just reading an old article in the Washington Post that said the company that manufacturers (and has a proprietary claim to) the SmarTrip technology...is going out of business, and once the cards are all gone...they're gone.
Can you find out if this is true? Will this only affect users in DC or will it affect Charm Card users as well?
COMMENT: The MTA says it has an ample stockpile of the cards and plenty of time for it and WMATA to come up with the next generation. Let's hoope they're right.
