Here's yet another reason to avoid Delaware

As if the Delaware Turnpike toll plaza wasn't enough of a motivator, there's yet another reason to avoid the Blue Hen State: You could get bonked by falling concrete on Interstate 95.

The Associated Press reports that the Delaware State Police are enforcing intermittent closing of I-95 because of chunks of concrete falling from an overpass. The problem led to a two-hour closing of the roadway Thursday morning.

Delaware Department of Transportation engineers are assessing the problem, and additional closings are possible, police warn. It appears to be an excellent excuse to stay on U.S. 40 and avoid  the turnpike tolls or to shun Delaware entirely.

Here's how to get to the Northeast from Baltimore without going through Delaware, home of  what  might be the most overpriced toll road in the United States.

And for completeness, the overpass in question is just North of the interchange where Deleware Memorial Bridge traffic breaks off. It's the overpass that carries Southbound I-495 over I-95 before the highways merge. Not that these facts in and of themselves add any further weight to the author's viewpoints about Del. roadways.

Beg pardon, further up the pike, where the two highways split/rejoin closer to Chester, PA.

At least they are adding EZpass Express lanes at the Delaware toll. That should keep some of the backup down.

I don't share your Delaware hate, I love the state and spend lots of time there. I do share your I-95 hate. They spent 4 years adding lanes to that highway, and did nothing to increase capacity on the feeder roads. So now we have 5 lanes of parked cars on I-95 in Delaware instead of 3, and they've created an even more dangerous merge/exit lane on I-95SB to Christiana Mall/DE-1. STUPID.

COMMENT: Don't confuse Delaware Turnpike hate with a disdain for the entire state (though it deserves a boycott over that toll plaza). The beaches are great, and there are some nice towns. And you can't beat Dogfish Head. But the pike is pure theft.
