Verizon iPhone is real -- and it's coming Feb. 10

Big news today: Verizon Wireless will soon start selling the iPhone 4. The Verizon homepage has been updated to include the iPhone 4. Apple's homepage has it, too.

Verizon will be selling the 16 GB version for $199 with a two-year plan, starting Feb. 10.

I'm checking to see the details on the monthly plans that are offered... the rumor was that Verizon would offer an unlimited data package to differentiate itself from AT&T, which offers tiered/capped plans.

This is a huge move for Apple and for Verizon. And there's a good chance that Google's Android platform, which has gained major steam on Verizon's network, will be dealt a setback as there's likely a large pent-up demand of Verizon customers who've been lusting after the iPhone, but have until now, settled for Android.

First the VZW iPhone looks like it will be a typical CDMA smart device and only be able to be used for voice OR data at a single time. That means no internet access while you are in a call and if a call comes in you can either pick up and drop internet or ignore it.

Second Steve wasn't there and the announcement was at @VZW office which I really think shows how important Apple views this announcement.

Finally the integrated mifi is a nice feature.

Also no plan pricing was announced. Given VZW's view that they have a premium network I can see the VZW iPhone being more expensive than ATT's

Personally I'll be sticking with an Android on T-Mobile.

I wonder if Verizon will force the bloatware (i.e. Blockbuster, VCast, etc.) that the Android phones get?

GREAT question. Wonder that, too. -gs

I have Droid Incredible on VZW and love the Droid platform. I don't see that the iPhone has anything to offer.

@Bill I doubt Apple will let them add their normal bloatware to IOS.

I have the Droid 2, and have been extremely happy with it, and my contract is for another year and a half. We'll see how the Verizon iphone does, and if I'll even want one then...

I read that the Verizon iPhone 4 will not work overseas. You will need an AT&T iPhone 4. The VZ iPhone 4 will not allow the user to be on the internet and answer a call at the same time. This new phone is worthless.

@Cosmos Girl The iPhone won't be any exception to VZW's crapware. It finds its way onto all their phones.

Besides, the iPhone is so 2010. I want to know the official release date for the Nexus S on VZW...Unless Verizon chooses to pillage and strip it of what should be its fundamental rights as an Android phone…I won't stand to see a repeat of what happened to the Galaxy S.

I've got no idea why anyone would spend the extra money for the brand name. Droid beats Apple for anything you need a real smartphone for. Now, if you're really into useless apps, then maybe you get an iphone. But for general entertainment and business use, Droid destroys it, and saves you $100 over the phone cost, since most verizons are $99

It's pretty easy to remove any pre-installed apps on a Droid if you're reasonably good with technology.

@Paul You will actually be able to surf on WiFi and talk at the same time. Verizon's CDMA network does not allow surfing/voice at the same time. But you can absolutely surf on WiFi (wireless internet) and talk at the same time.

Flat out, the Droid is a better platform - open system, expandable, Flash capable, better cameras, etc. Verizon got the iPhone a year too late.

February 3 is the date when existing Verizon Wireless customers can pre-order the iPhone 4 online. February 10 is the date when new customers can purchase the iPhone 4 from Verizon online, in Verizon Wireless stores and in Apple retail locations.

@Captain Samuel: It's possible one or more phones on 4G may support simultaneous voice and data. When questioned about this during last week's CES, Verizon barely commented but did say that it was possible that specific phones might have that feature. When asked further if simultaneous voice/data would be device or network-wide, Verizon refused to comment further. "No Comment" has been the most aggravating thing about all the recent announcements. It was common knowledge what new phones were coming (incl. iPhone). what people really want to know is what the monthly costs (for 4G) are gonna be, and if there will be data caps. Why announce all this good stuff, and not provide the most important piece of the puzzle?

@Larry Gopnik Unless "reasonably good" includes rooting the phone, there is no "pretty easy" way to remove Bing or pre-installed apps from the Fascinate.

The tech community will always find ways to break through barriers, but that doesn't change the fact that what VZW is doing, in principle, is wrong. Take for instance charging $9.99 for a pre-installed app that costs only $.99 in the market.
