Google tablet coming soon?

google-tablet.jpgThe Apple iPad just hit store shelves and early adopters' mailboxes earlier this month. Now we may have another pad on the horizon: the still unnamed/unconfirmed Google Android tablet.

The tech world's abuzz after a New York Times story all but made it official that Google is "soon expected" to release a tablet.

For people who took a pass on the iPad, would you consider buying a tablet that operated on Google's Android platform? (Don't forget -- Microsoft is supposedly entering the tablet sphere with HP coming out with its own device(s).)

Take the Google tablet poll:

I'm really hoping the competitors can put together a device to rival the iPad. If Apple locks down this market, I don't think we'll be seeing much innovation any longer. But if Google or MS can somehow get some traction and at least keep Apple honest, I think we'll see a faster pace of innovation on par with what we've witnessed in the smartphone market.

I've put together a "route" of the most promising competitors. http://thebusride.com/ride/ipad-alternatives-pics-reviews-

This is really exciting. Android sounds like a good choice for running a tablet. It seems like Google has best chances to challenge the iPad, especially if taken into account that they support an open platform when it comes to software development. And competition is always good – it`ll spur innovation, like Zack noted, and it will (hopefully) bring down the prices.

Google doesn't know how to build an innovative piece of consumer hardware.

Both MS and Google rely on others to innovate as they attempt to copy and improve. Neither have ever been first to market in anything.

Sure Google open sourced Android. Apple open sourced Webkit. Why one company is any better than the other in the eyes of the tech populists I'm not quite sure.

Google is an ad agency that is trying its best to be something else. Has show it no longer cares about your private data in order to break into new markets (see another failed attempt at its social platform) and will be sunk if and when anyone seriously challenges adwords.

MS can't even create a browser that supports web standards...

Let's hope the innovation challenge comes from somewhere capable.
