West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has called on Dick Cheney to apologize for remarks he made about the state today at the National Press Club.

And indeed the vice president has apologized.

Cheney had spoken of his family history and said he had Cheneys from both sides of his family. "And we don't even live in West Virginia," Cheney said. "You can say those things when you're not running for re-election."

Cheney's words sparked this response from Manchin, who defended the state:

"I truly cannot believe that any vice president of the United States, regardless of their political affiliation, would make such a derogatory statement about my state or any state for that matter," Manchin said in a statement on his Web site.

"West Virginia is home to some of the most patriotic people in the nation and our sons and daughters have answered the call to duty every time a president has needed their service. They deserve better from the vice president, and so I would simply ask for his apology."

And this evening, the vice president's office said no offense was intended.

"The vice president's off-hand comment was not meant to hurt anyone,'' said Lea Anne McBride, spokeswoman for Cheney. "On reflection, he concluded that it was an inappropriate attempt at humor that he should not have made. The vice president apologizes to the people of West Virginia for the inappropriate remark."

In his remarks, Cheney said that his wife was researching a book, when she noticed that his grandmother was descended from a Richard Cheney.

Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) blasted Cheney with this response:

"That a man who has ascended to the seat of vice president of the United States would openly display such contempt and astounding ignorance toward his own countrymen is an insult to all Americans," Byrd said in a statement. "Now that he or the administration he represents no longer needs their vote, Mr. Cheney apparently feels that he is now free to mock and belittle the people of West Virginia."

During a question-and-answer period following a speech, the vice president said he has distant roots which connect him to Sen. Barack Obama.

Cheney said he would not object to a family reunion with Obama, but that the presidential candidate might not want one before November.

"He'd probably be fearful I might whisper in his ear and change his whole view of the Middle East," Cheney said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Maybe it 'Chinny' that needs the brain surgery?

It's not a good idea to take pot shots at your GOPer base (WV), Darth.

Wow, how disgusting. How unpatriotic of Cheney ... But is it really a suprise?

What would he whisper in Obama's ear anyway? He's only full of *** and lies anyway, it's not like he'd be telling the truth.

Let's see. Per capita, West Virginia has more soldiers fighting in Iraq than any other state.
Dick Cheney, like our Draft Dodger in Chief, jumped through hoops to avoid combat in Viet Nam, even though neither had any qualms about lying to the nation regarding reasons for putting others in harms way.
What a horrible people we have running our country right now.

As some of us tried to tell Republican voters during the last presidential election: Frodo failed; Cheney has the Ring...

This is a non-issue because if Obama or ANY Democrat had made similar stmts there would have been more than 3 comments and everyone would have been appalled and would want blood. Republicans make these types of gaffes all the time & it rarely gets any media attention. He made these comments months ago and it’s just getting media attention, image if a Democrat made these stmts, it would have been on Youtube that same evening and on the male “Henfest” shows on Faux News hourly with some old- greasy dirt bag screaming at the camera. I guess more people are offended by being called bitter than inbred. Darn liberal media.

This is ridiculous. If some people are inferring that many people in West Virginia 9a place wher I lived) marry their cousins, and hence have the same surname on each side of the family, it doesn't matter ! It's PERFECTLY moral AND legal to marry your cousin. The Bible COMMANDS you to marry your cousin, and in many cultures, it is a custom. There's nothing wrong with it.

Just another example of pure Rebublican Family Values. Thes epeople discust me and are an embarassment to this country!~ They have already made our country despised and loathed throughout the world I guess it was a matter of time before this fool added to the punch his own country! Anyway, he doesnt give a hoot about America now that he made all his money throught the draths of our soldiers in Iraq! I just dont understand why nothing is done about this? Our country has lost its integrity and determination. If only the Democrats put as much energy into investigating this clown as the republicans did with the democrat Bill Clinton for cheating on his wife! Boy I am glad I live in Canada these days thats all I have to say! I moved here when Bush won his first election and will stay here until the Democrats put our country back on track!

Does Cheney plan to be a stand up comedian in his next career?

I never thought Dick would bring the funny. I still say I'll believe it when I see it...

It's funny that these same voters stated that they would not vote for Obama because of race. Now the second highest ranking republican in the country, makes fun of an indicates that he views them as inbreds and ignorant. I don't know if this is "chickens coming home to roost" or him seeing them as inferior people. It want matter that he insulted them, they will still vote for McCain who most likely see them the same way.

Jeff? Bruce? Comments?

Lighten-up folks - it was a joke.

"Per capita, West Virginia has more soldiers fighting in Iraq than any other state." - Yes including Lindy England and I'd bet anything her gene pool was severely restricted!

Oh my goodness I just agreed with something Sen. Robert C. Byrd said!

His weak attempt at a joke was just stupid, but there is nothing like reading comments from Chicago Democrats who suddenly give a crap about West Virginia and who has more troops where.

I can't go back a long way in my history, but I was smart enough not to vote for you & your side kick.

I guess it's only an offense if your name is Obama and you say something about a 'typical white woman'.
Cons, your political correctness is showing.

John,

We are not from Chicago. Not even close.

It was stupid, but I've heard people from West Virginia called worse things by John E (hater of all things southern) right here on this blog. Also, Terri, you're wrong. On MEMORIAL DAY Obama pledged tribute to "all our fallen heroes - some of whom are here today" and not only did it not make the 6 o'clock news but CNN edited his gaffe out of their story about his memorial day speech.

Just another light hearted gaffe like shooting your friend in the face.

Freak!

He was a fool long before his stupid comment.

Cheney is not even a lug nut. Even lug nuts are smarter are more useful than him. What a waste of space.

President Roosevelt married his cousin, Eleanor, and no one seemed to have trouble with that.

How absolutely vile. One of our most powerful leaders mocks a state and its citizens... then doesn't have the dignity to apologize himself. AND he openly admits he thinks it's OK to say as his administration is no longer running for office.

Yes, Dick, you actually said it out loud. Jackass.

No wonder the world community thinks less of us with such leaders at the helm. Then, he manages to disparage the Middle East. It's as though he doesn't even care how many Americans he puts in danger by espousing his hatred.

I'm embarrassed to call him a countryman. I wish the rest of the world knew how many of us felt that way.

Bobby "KKK" Byrd is taking Cheney to task for making a joke. Was it a joke when Bobby "KKK" Byrd used the "N" a few years ago. Not one demorat or leader of the black community took Bobby "KKK" Byrd to task.

The typical liberal double standard.

And the endless restoration of dignity to the White House continues.........

"Mr. Vice President it appears that your recent comments have offended a number of people in West Virginia"

"So..."

Oh, PLEASE keep Dick Cheney in the public eye! He is the greatest spokesman for the Democratic party I can think of. Forget "Change" or "Yes we can". A picture of Cheney standing next to McBush is all we need.

This is water seeking its level. Chee-ney is beneath contempt, and deserves nothing but contempt for the dreadful job he and his cohort have done for the last 8 years. Hey Dickie, go home to Wyoming and shut your old miserable mouth! Better yet, why not resign and go try out for Last Comic Standing? Oh yeah, you don't compete unless you can fix the outocme in advance, do you, fathead?

Hmmm.....an article of "Truth" and "Lies." Truth: Dick Cheney said it and he was WRONG..... The LIE: "Robert Byrd said".....Robert Bryd never said anything. Someone on his staff wrote that statement. He doesn't even know what's going on. He's 9000 years old......Retire already...... He's an embarassment to my home state.....

John,

This Democrat gives a crap enough about our military personnel to know that that the Iraqi government is playing us like chumps.

After 6 years where's the Iraqi government standing up? We won over Germany and Japan in less time.

Cheney is still exercizing stock options in Halliburton, even as he is VP. So, he is laughing all the way to the bank while we rage against his banter. Isn't it more important to investigate his involvement in lucrative contracts that yield hugh profits than to say "tisk, tisk" to his hate filled rantings?

The Bible COMMANDS you to marry your cousin, and in many cultures, it is a custom. There's nothing wrong with it.

Posted by: Daniel P. From Long Island, N.Y."

Hey Daniel, the Bible also commands me to kill my neighbor for growing two different crops on the same land. Oh ya it also Commands me to sell my eldest daugher to the highest bidder.. shall I go on?
Whether marrying your cousin or not is ok, is not the point. The point is this jerk was making a joke about incest in general and for that he should apologize.

Speaking of genealogy, did you know through his mom, Barbara, GW is a distant relative of president Franklin Pierce. He was a pro-slavery, alcoholic. Now we know where GW gets it from. Funny thing is Pierce was a democrat. But then again, the parties kind of did a complete "flip-flop" around the start of the 20th century.

The Bible COMMANDS you to marry your cousin.

Posted by: Daniel P. From Long Island, N.Y.

That would be the 15th Commandment, I believe. Moses dropped that tablet, though, as Mel Brooks noted.

Thanks for the post, Jerry Lee... er, I mean, "Daniel P."

It's fanny joke, never mind. The reality is =all the mankind are from one man (ADAM), so, we are all brothers and sisters regardless of color, national origin, religion, sex and----???
Moreover, Obama is 50% white from his mother and 50% black from his father, give him any color you need but he (obama) is in the middle of all this, he is uniter

Very stupid comment. West Virginia, which normally votes Democratic, voted for the Bush-Cheney ticket twice. And it helped put them over the top in 2000. Politicians from both parties seem to never learn the cameras are rolling and anything you say will end up on the internet.

Not really my point. I served and know darn well that rural America is contributing heavily to Iraq in service of their country. Something that many Chicago area Democrats know nothing about, and on a daily basis are much more concerned about what time the train to Evanston leaves, or the recent price spike in a cup of Starbuck's coffee. But by GOD if Dick Cheney says something utterly idiotic, we can knock the dust off the old Vader comments and come to the defense of those good old West Virginians.

Way to go Dick!!

I can get to like Cheney ! Folks, give him a break ! He cannot spend his entire life being Evil !!! I hope he loses his madman persona completely and may be even appear on Jon Stuart show !! Who needs madmen anyways?

Liberals make comments about how dumb the South is all the time as it is the "red state" area. Had Cheney said it about AR or KY or TN, you liberals would have thought it was funny.

His comment was a joke. When the liberal hero Obama talked about the poor and mistreated in PA. and other states clinging to their guns and religion, he was not joking. Those are his true feelings and he expressed them. Any lib take him to task?

Ahh, the old liberal media double standard again!

As for Robert O. stating that: "Robert Bryd never said anything. Someone on his staff wrote that statement. He doesn't even know what's going on. He's 9000 years old......Retire already...... He's an embarassment to my home state....."

Byrd did indeed say the "N" word! And not a peep from the liberal or demoratic or black leadership against "KKK" Byrd.

Let's have a contest to see who can act the most offended by Cheney's comment.

I thought it was funny. And I hate Cheney. Hey, WV, if the shoe fits...

"He'd probably be fearful I might whisper in his ear and change his whole view of the Middle East," Cheney said.
----
BTW, for those who are not in on the whisper yet: "1% of total... thhat ihs 30 bhillhion dohllhars, Ohbhama! "

The funny thing is this is how Bush and company felt all along. Like Darth said they just couldn't say it because they needed to be re-elected. The GOP base should look long and hard at who they support and who supports them. They'll see they've been lied to for years.

Yes, I'm a Democrat who thought Cheney was funny. I also laugh at movies which show people slipping on banana peels or farting at inappropriate times. Com'mon folks lighten up!

We're discussing a reference to West Virginia, correct, the same state that elected Senator Byrd, the Democrat, and a former leader of the Klu Klux Klan, correct ?

Hey, where's the outrage from Kentucky? Time was, these jokes wouldv'e been made about my home state. Seems like Kentucky can't make it into the news for anything.

hey Tyson, if we all came from one man then i guyess that makes us mutants? Give me a break! So if we all came from one manhow is it that we are all so many colors and have different facial points? You people who believe in that book of fairy tales should go to the Library of Congress and read all of the chapters and versus that were taken oout through history. Like, the chapters on homosexual unions for one! The bible was written by men to explain life as they knew it. it was then abridged through many centuries to conform to the times at hand. Find something else to read for a change. your book is out dated.

I'm noticing that it's an unbreakable routine for people of either side of the political spectrum to insist that, if THEIR candidate is caught in an "embarassing" quote that it's "JUST A JOKE -- LIGHTEN UP!!!" These same people seem to be the same ones who become frothily outraged if someone from the other party steps over the line with an ill-thought quote.

At this point, ANYBODY who thinks they can get away with any kind of humor while they're in the public eye has no brain at all. NOBODY is getting the jokes any more.

I don't like the guy no matter what he says.
Smarmy? INDEED!!

So, maybe Teddy Kennedy
can give Draft Dodger Cheney
the name of a good brain
surgeon,however that is also
assuming someone knows
where Cheney misplaced it...
Or is Cheney trying out to be
his relative Barack Obama
Vice President as well?

So is it a Halliburton stock tip that he'd whisper into President Obama's ear?

what a jerk. he makes me ashamed.

sounds like the Veep draws witticisms from the same book as Chicago's Mayor Daley. both are the sole gigglers at their inappropriate humor. both are an embarassment every time they step in front of a microphone.

Don't let the facts get in the way of how you all define inbred. Here's a link on the facts about cousins marrying:

http://www.cousincouples.com/info/facts.shtml

I have a cousin whose parents are cousins. He's a healthy individual. He's also intelligent, kind, generous and I'm proud that he is a member of my family.

wordvarc-you are really funny!

A stupid attempt for a laugh by an arrogant man. I don't believe this is a 'Republican' thing.

It would seem that people from many parts of our country like poking remarks about the people from West Virginia. But they all love our coal to make their electricity for their homes. Let the draft dodging, pencil pushing war mongler Vice Pres. come up here and work under the ground digging coal or working in one of our factories for slightly above minimum wage or cut timber in the freezing cold and then see how he would respond. Not just the vice Pres. but like all of our Elected Govt. are rotten to the core. And if he believes in god, he can explain all his nastyness to him or her when he needs to...

I think some are misinterpreting what I said regarding the Bible. I do not mean that everyone should marry their cousin. All I mean is that the Bible does not prohibit it, so there is no religious objection to it. There is also no biological reason not to, and many states permit it. Opposing cousin marriage is simply a matter of prejudice.

It's a shame Dick Cheney didn't grow up in our beautiful State. He obviously would have learned a thing or two about firearms and hunter safety!!!

As if liberals wouldn't mock West Virginia, too. Come on people, that's truly a great joke. As a libertarian, I certainly disagree with MANY of his policies, but nevertheless, Dick Cheney is a funny dude.
