Much conversation this Sunday morning on the talk shows about the flyer that Barack Obama is distributing in Kentucky about the role of his Christian faith in his life.
Here's a look at the flyer:
Republican pundit Peggy Noonan, who as President Reagan's speechwriter knows something about the use of symbolism in politics, said the flyer is part of Obama's effort to reassure Americans that he shares the same culture they do.
But another Republican, ex-Arkansas governor and former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee had a bit of a gripe. Remember Huckabee's famous Christmas ad, in which the camera slowly pans over his shoulder to reveal something that looks like a white cross in the background?
"I took grief for that for months," Huckabee said on "Meet the Press." I'm still taking it--for something that wasn't a cross. It was a bookshelf for heaven's sake."
He said a double standard existed for Republicans and Democrats who invoke their faith in campaigns. "If a Republican gets near a church, we are accused of embracing it," he said.
He then, however, praised Obama as a "person of faith."

Comments
Huckabee was ridiculed and laughed at simply because a "bookshelf" behind him had the image of a cross. Why does Obama get a free pass? Answer: because he's a liberal....he MUST have good intentions. This is another "daily" example of how the media attacks conservatives and gives liberals a free pass. McCains campaign would be over if he had made the comment of "57 states...with one left to go." The only reason liberalism survives is because liberals control the media and higher education.

Liberals control the media? Post Jeremiah Wright? Bittergate? Surely you jest?
It's a bunfight out there. The partisans here what they want to hear and read what they want to read. But given the long, long history of spin by the right -- who can forget 'swftboat' in which the media allowed a decorated war hero, John Kerry, to be slandered by a pair of draft dodgers in Bush and Cheney -- if there's a bias, it's the other way.

When a politician thrusts religion into politics, as Obama has done, we must (not may, nor should, MUST) examine his religion. We must read the theology, and if it is irrational or hateful or dangerous, then we are right to question the fitness and motives of the politician.
The Theology of Obama's pastor and spiritual mentor, Jeremiah Wright is based upon the thoughts of two 60s Black Power Theologians: James Cone and Dwight Hopkins. (Google for more info).
Cone has said, "If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him. The task of black theology is to kill Gods who do not belong to the black community ... Black theology will accept only the love of God which participates in the destruction of the white enemy."
And that is essentially the message that Wright delivered from his pulpit. That is the ethos that BO chose when he chose to join Trinity United. Obama only denouced this message after twenty years and recent enormous public pressure.
So why would an intelligent, well read man who grew up in a cosmopolitan, atheist-leaning background choose a religious confession that is relatively simple minded (Evangelical fundamentalism) but also bizarrely twists Christianity into a message of violent hatred? Why would a seemingly rational man make a seemingly irrational choice? Unless one argues that Obama is insane, then the only reasonable answer is that he joined Trinity United as a cynical, political ploy, to be more electable to the Illinois Senate. So much for Obama the decent and principled.

Barack Obama has every right to associate himself with the 'cross' shown in the background on the altar-but since you bring it up---Learn about the reasons why Obama can associate himself with the cross. http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal

This is important.
The treatment of Hillary--so crucial to Obama's rise at the same time he AND hillary adopted more or less the John Edwards platform--is why this woman left his campaign. I'll support whomever is at the top of the Dem ticket in the fall---because I'm a realist.
But if this bad behavior is not stopped--it will harm us in the fall, I fear.

Ridiculous assertion, the Republican attack machine soars to new heights of delusional propaganda.
Anyone who suggests Obama has has a free pass on religion must not have been watching the news networks playing a snippet of Wright over and over again to the point of wanting to make you vomit.
McCain and Obama have both made numerous gaffs, they are human. However the media has not focused on McCain gaffs, like the fact he is stumped if the TelePrompter fails giving his own stump speech.
To suggest the media and education is controlled by "liberals" is delusional to the point of advocating not knowing facts about reality!
Here are the facts, McCain voted 90% for Bush agenda the last 8 years.

You want the same, vote McCain.
My vote is for Obama.

"He then praised Obama as a person of faith."
The muslim faith?
Certainly not the Christian faith with friendly mentors like Rev. Wright and Louie Farrakan.

Maybe he must spawn such an add because some fools still think he's a muslim?
And who spread that rumour? Liberal media, i guess.
Posted by: Wotan | May 18, 2008 12:39 PM
When Huckabee has to deal with 10 or 15% of the voters in some states actually believing false rumors people spread around about him being Muslim, then he can complain about a double standard that it's ok for Obama to tell people he's actually a Christian but it's not ok for Huckabee to keep using it as a campaign point.
If people weren't spreading those lies about Obama around then I would have a problem with him going out and emphasizing to people he's Christian, since I would see no particular reason to do it beyond empty pandering. But the man is entitled to rebut false information others are spreading about him.
Posted by: Grant | May 18, 2008 12:45 PM
Obama is distributing the flyer showing Obama near a cross, because of the persistent false rumors of Obama being a radical Muslim. Those rumors are rampant in Kentucky, thus this flyer is merely intended to counter balance those rumors. If people had not been falsely saying that Obama is a Muslim, then Obama would not be using this flyer. That is why Obama is getting a free pass - the media know that Obama has been falsely labeled as a Muslim (even a radical Muslim) and thus the media support Obama setting the record straight by means of this flyer.

There will be much buyers' remorse no matter which of the three makes it into office. I really wish one of the top three running was of an alternate party since I don't like the two top Dems or the Pug running. It seems that many freak shows began with the beginning of the primaries and three of the shows are continuing. The Pugs seem to have used fear, "the troops", false morality and untruths, and the remaining Dems have used novelty, fad, generalities, and fabrication. Whoever is elected, I pray they have a character transplant bf inauguration day.

I wonder how many nightly stories Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews will do about this photo? Multiply this story times forty years of media bias and it's easy to figure out why so many liberals hate conservatives. It's time for liberals to "think for yourself" and filter "all" the information the media and your college professors spoon feeds you!!

To: MJ, the parent church of Obama's congregation is the United Church of Christ, that is a mainline church not a Fundamentalist church. It is a church which is committed to uniting Christians. It was even formed by the uniting of several Christian denominations into one demonination. It is thus a fitting church for someone (such as Obama) who wants to unite Democrats, independents, and even some Republicans into one positive movement for change. Obama is about finding common ground and uniting the country together to find solutions to the nation's problems.
Posted by: Gavin Young | May 18, 2008 1:14 PM
This is more for MJ -- and other Republican voters like me who may finally see the gift facing us in this brilliant Presidential Candidate -- clearly a thoughtful argument presented by MJ, but based on a flawed foundation: as Mr Obama put it himself in his thoughtful, brave response to Mr Wright's insane rants, he could no more disown his kooky Pastor for such queasy remarks than he could his own white grandmother for her racist slurs against blacks. In other words, Mr. Obama is trying to set a new standard by taking the high road, the road of the righteous. He took the high road, and from where I'm sitting, arguments like MJ's are merely sad disguises for the very racism and clever double-speak lurking under the surface across the board in our nation, by both blacks and whites, and that Mr Obama so refreshingly addressed. Let's face it people: it is time for healing, not wagging fingers and dirty politics of Karl Rove. This is, after all, what Jesus wanted is it not? He certainly did NOT want us waving fingers of judgment, lest we be judged ourselves. And regarding what Joe absurdly refers to as the "Liberal press", come on people - let's get real or don't the words "Fox News" mean anything to you? In short, Jesus warned us about taking such pious attitudes and positions of judgment, and it's time to give hope and the possibility of a better tomorrow for our great Nation a chance instead. Only one man outside of Jesus can do that for us, heal us, bring us together as our President, and for me that man Barack Obama.

Dear Fellow Americans,
Our Great-grand Nation, the United States of America
is facing and will face very critical and substantial
"Challenges" in coming, months, years, and decades to come.
It is very essential that we pick out our next
President keeping in mind the following criteria.
1. A candidate who has a clear and candid " Vision and Mission" for our Nation.
2. A candidate with " Strong Character and Stable Integrity" in-spite of adversity during primary election process.
3. A candidate with sound and sustained "Presidential Temperament" and
" Judgment".
4. A candidate with little "Washington exposure"
and "real connectedness with people and future generation".
5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears us Down".
6. A candidate not based on sexism, racism, regionalism, and ageism.
In my professional, political and personal opinion, the only candidate who meets the all above characteristics and has shown constant and consistent coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.
As an independent registered voter since 1980. I voted
for Carter, voted for Reagan, voted for First Bush,
and second Bush in 2000 and In the process last
interest in Washington politics and I
stopped voting. Getting disinterested and disgusted in our political process and stopping voting that was a bad decision in any circumstance, particularly under present circumstances.
This time we can not afford to stay on side lines and
let "Washington" stay the same.We can not afford our
Greatgreat Nation to become less than what we are, what we were and what we can be?
We need to send clear, careful and candid message to the world and some time 24 hour partisan hateful media to set the agenda for our future.
These partisan media outlets are trying to deprive, dupe, and derail us and our Nation getting it right this time.
These partisan media and pundits are trying their best to deny us better future and continue focus our weaknesses and generate bitter future for us and our Greatgrand Nation. { Our Greatgrand Nations people
are persistently and constantly subjected to this
Psychological Terrorism" without our knowledge. The common and regular people do not have time to see thru
and sort thru this psychological terrorism perpetuated by these partisan media outlets.
We the Americans should not and would not to allow
these partisan media outlets psychologically terrorized, traumatized and silence us this time and any time in future.
I am sure that we will get it right this
time and elect Senator Obama our next President.
Let us remember that our Greatgrand is constituted of
family, friends,fellowships, faith, funds,foundation,
fun, and future with fairness and freedom and without
fear or favor.
We can not afford to lose any of above. Let us stand
up, be counted, save, build our Greatgrand Nation for
centuries to come and regain our world economic, moral, and power status back.
God Bless our Great grand Nation and its diverse
people.
Our Greatgrand nation needs present and future
stability, security, safety,sustained progress and
restoration of our due status in this perilous Global

TO JOE: YOU'RE WRONG. OBAMA GETS THE FREE PASS BECAUSE HE IS BLACK. The media and most people are afraid of the 9/10 african americans voting for him. This is a racial election. More still to come. Nobody is willing to cool things down before it gets really nasty. The level of frustration is getting high mostly among the low incomes working white people. the media enjoy the party. Bill O'Reilly said that "MSNBC choice to back Obama is just about making money", I doubt it. Gender is harder to overcome than race. Whose candidate would have survived this: "57 states, Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers, Tony Rezko & Nadhmi Auchi, the former iraki minister of electricity Aiham Alsammarae a dual iraki-american citizen who broke out of a bagdad jail in the Green Zone after being found guilty on a dozen convictions of curruption. Recently he helped in bailing out Tony Rezko from jail. Obama who is always loyal to his friends wears a bracelet on his WRIGHT wrist in solidarity to Rezko's electronic ankle bracelet. Watch carefully, the watch on Obama's left wrist is not a ROLEX but a REZKO. Remember, people have the leaders they deserve. In April 2003, 72% of americans supported the war in irak. In 2004, Bush didn't lock up himself in the White House. He got reelected! By who? People are still convinced that being stupid has no consequences. Talking to criminals and terrorists without conditions even if Bill Ayers is your foreign policy advisor will always be a validation of the worst of ignorance and mediocrity sadly combined. It is unaceptable. There are already some complex international channels and diplomatic ways to approach these criminals. Taking the risk of an unilateral and uncondional approach on these complex issues is JUST INCREDIBLILY NAIVE AND VERY DISSAPOINTING. Our democratic values deserve better. Nonetheless, we should respect the will of the people if the majority decide to go that way. the same way they when with Bush and this war. It was so easy to blame Hillary Clinton and others for their votes. Let's begin our talks with the Hamas, the Hezbollah, Ahmadinejad, Syria, Al-Qaida. Let's send Bill Ayers as our Special Envoy to Osama bin Laden. What are people thinking? Max

This flier only reminds voters of Obama's 20 years with Rev. Wright.
What is also disturbing is that Obama on the cover of a "poltical" flier is quoted as saying he will do the "Lord's work." I though he was running for President to work for the people.
So this is either "born again" talk (which is scary) or pandering... which is disgusting. Either way Obama should not get a pass of any kind after Huckabee got beat up for his ad.
P.S. Obama supporters need to realize that voters who "think" he is Muslim were not going to vote for him anyway. Quit making lame excuses for your candidate's bad judgement.

How can anybody with sense trust an individual who sat for 20 years listening to Jeremiah Wright's preaching of hate for America and whites.
Yes! Barack Hussein Obama sat in the crowd of overly jubilated people, after the sad incident of 9/11.
Barack sat for 20 years listening and believing and joining hands with Jeremiah Wrights congregation, who believe AIDS was created by whites to eliminate blacks and many other outrageous and demented theories of persecution.
Who can trust Barack?

1. A candidate who has a clear and candid " Vision and Mission" for our Nation.
You're WRIGHT: 20 years marinating passively under jeremiah's influence not far from farrakhan means free of bias, prejudice, or malice. EYES WIDE SHUT. Talking about judgement and leadership.
2. A candidate with " Strong Character and Stable Integrity" in-spite of adversity during primary election process.
You're WRIHT: Obama has been a follower all his life. Your prayers will turn him into a leader pretty soon. Talking integrety: Tony Rezko just got out of jail, he is now at home enjoying the confort of a free Electronic Ankle Bracelet.
3. A candidate with sound and sustained "Presidential Temperament" and
" Judgment".
Would you use the help of a despicable friend under federal investigation for corruption to buy or extend your property? Moral indignation is the bare minimum.
4. A candidate with little "Washington exposure"
and "real connectedness with people and future generation".
"Washington Exposure" you said? do you know about: The Chicago Way, The Operation Board Games, Chicago COMBINE?
5. A candidate who "Inspires us up" rather than
"Tears us Down".
A unifier enjoying the benefit of a clear racial and bias vote. 9/10 african americans for Obama. The other candidate took it. As a consequence, poor unnecessary racial frustrations and tensions. What about the MELTING POT?
6. A candidate not based on sexism, racism, regionalism, and ageism.
Obama couldn't stand up against men like Wright, Ayers, Rezko, when he should have. We saw a different man tearing down a woman. Wait till November to see how many women will never forget it. Obama and friends knew that Hillary had it. They chose to blew it up. A proclamed leader without a vision is an OPPORTUNIST.
In my professional, political and personal opinion, the only candidate who meets the all above characteristics and has shown constant and consistent coolness, calmness, and connectedness { PRESIDENTIAL TEMPERAMENT } is Senator Barrack Obama.
Tough time for the country, no training time. The country needs a leader from day one, not a follower.
Thanks for posting this. max

Do you not find it a bit strange for a Presidential candidate to be someone we have not a clue as to his background and wonder of his character for the lack of such knowledge? Obama has not spoken to his being trained as a teacher of the Islam law, the highest calling for a Muslim. Why? It is not the knowing of the Shari that is the problem, but it is the hiding of his past that makes one worry, as to who he really is. Talk is cheap, past actions are clear. Obama is considered the most liberal congressman in his very short time on the hill. That points to Obama being a communist and being such finds interest in the beliefs of our enemy who too are communist and as is his following of the Muslim Farakan, and the black liberation movement.
It has not been so many years ago that our leaders held communism as the poison of the planet. Why have we lost that knowledge? Why does Oprah support the teaching of Obama's Church that there is more then Jesus as a path to salvation?
All this doubt brings up the fact of electing our President. We cannot assume anything when it comes to our Presidential leadership qualities we elect. Being President is not an place to train or to gain resume. It is the top and it needs our greatest scrutiny to elect someone to it. Thus, it is quite important to delve into the background and the values and faith of a candidate. Who is Jesus Mr. Obama?

A person's faith should be the business of no one else.
It certainly should never be a requirement for office.
I know there are Americans who think otherwise, but they should pause and consider just which of hundreds of religions and their variations should be the standard.
None of course is the right answer.

The reason that the cross in Huckabee's ad got attention, was the idea that he was being "subliminal" about it, hoping to evoke a religious connection for the candidate without overtly stating one. People have a right to recognize and call out anything that seems "sneaky." Subliminal advertising was outlawed for a reason. If Huckabee wanted to run ads showing him standing at a pulpit, that would have been fine by me. But don't be sneaky about it.

He didn't "bring religion to the campaign". He kept his mouth shut and the RR attacked his middle name, possible ties to Islam and the rants of his reverend. He responded, the way anybody would, to the tireless pursuit of maligning his reputation by attacking his faith.
It's always nice to see the republic playbook at work. Hit 'em where they're the strongest and hide behind the fact that they made mention of something admirable. John Kerry the war hero? Swift boat him. "Hey, he's the one who brought it up, so it's ok".

Obama: The Con
Obama has fixed this race by deception to Americans. He has lied about his background and his connections with radical, Anti American, anti semitic leaders until just a few months ago.
He has hidden his relationship with Reverend Wright,, Farrakhan, the “Nation of Islam’ leader, Syrian Criminal, Anton Rezko and his Black Liberation Theology since the beginning of the primary.
My community have changed their minds about this man and will not vote for him in the general election because of this lies and deception
This whole election process, especially not seating Florida and Michigan with almost 400 delegates, is a disgrace for the American people.
John King keep showing his map with only 48 states. These maps and math are convincing superdelegates that Obama is in the lead. There are 50 states in our country.
Obama has done everything in his power to convince everyone that there is only 48 by not having a revote or even seating them.
The postponement of seating these state is a deliberate act. Senator Obmama is deliberately postponing this decision to brag about his lead.
For those people that were too young to know President Clinton. He is not liked, but loved through out the world. Our country was thriving, the era was "upbeat" and there was peace in our country.
There is no way to compare "Bush" and Clinton. The Clintons were the BEST!
The media has painted President Clinton as a racist in spite of the fact that he has an office in Harlem His years in office were spent fighting for civil rights and for the underdog, especially African American.
The coverage of this campaign is disgraceful in this regard above all. African Americans should be ashamed of how they have treated all of the Clintons.
Trinity United Church of Christ, Tony Rezko the Syrian Criminal, Louis Farrakhan, William Ayers a 60’s radical that bombed government buildings and Muslim upbringing should be a wake up call to Democrats.
Please don't blow the change with a man that has not only little known about these issues before the first primary and kept it away from the media until the end of this race. Senator Obama will lose this election if he's the nominee.
Lastly and something that needs to be evaluated is the race issue; There will never be a fair an accurate poll determining how many people will really vote for Obama. McCain will win if the Democrats don't wake up.
On Fox News Sunday, Williams claimed Obama's Muslim father "presents a problem"
On the January 21 edition of Fox Broadcasting Co.'s Fox News Sunday, National Public Radio senior correspondent and Fox News contributor Juan Williams noted that
Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) "comes from a father who was a Muslim" and added that "given that we're at war with Muslim extremists, that presents a problem."
How much more bad news do we need to know about a Democrat candidate before we realize that this man is laughing up his sleeve at all of us.
Wake up Democrats. We can not and will not win this election unless we run from Obama and start supporting the Clintons.
Please keep the unsettling issues pertaining to Senator Obama in the forefront.
There are too many issues surrounding this man that disturbs many Americans and believe me, there will be many more to come.

It's not a double standard if you understand how the media works. There's no story if you come right out and stamp a huge cross on the cover and stand at a pulpit. Had Huckabee done that, the media wouldn't have even commented on it. "Preacher stands at pulpit, gives sermon. News at 11".
The problem Huckabee had was that the media could turn it into a story by asking "was he trying to subliminally insert religion into his message?". All of a sudden there's questions about whether or not Huckabee was doing something that he perceived to be inappropriate and was thus trying to do it in a subversive way. As far as the media is concerned it doesn't actually matter whether or not it's actually improper, it's just the perception of impropriety that's important.
This is why Huckabee got hit for having a bookshelf that looked like a cross in his ad while Obama gets a free pass for blatantly plastering a real cross in his.
