The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Stephen Colbert was sifting through the restraining orders in his morning mail searching for that wedding invitation from Jenna Bush.

"May 10th is just around the corner, and I couldn't be more excited,'' said Colbert, who has written himself a "Save the Date'' card for the wedding of one of the first twins and Henry Hager at the Bush family ranch in Texas. The host of Comedy Central's Colbert Report also played a snippet of Laura Bush's actual wedding-day adivce for daughter Jenna, from CBS' Early Show:

"I think the main advice is just to be there, to think about every minute,'' mom told her daughter in that interview.

"It is true,'' Colbert said. "It is so important to be at your own wedding. Let me tell you, people hate to hear, 'I do,' coming over a speaker phone.

"Of course, everybody who is anybody is going to be there,'' said Colbert, who, of course, won't be. "Dick Cheney is gong to be there, throwing rice... well, firing rice.''

I'm just glad her fiance Henry never got Left Behind. Rest assured his rich family and rich family friends were always there, ready to make sure he always succeeded in life. It's too bad more qualified people were turned down jobs in the White House so that this punk could be handed plum jobs just because his family is well connected. It's the Republican way.

Ahhh - yes & the first comment is, of course, a slam against Republicans. Of course it's never considered that Democrats operate the same way. Need an example? Look at the Clinton administration, the Daley adminstration (both of them), Blago & both Stroger administrations.
Anyway - Like Colbert's way of intentionally misunderstanding the advice from mom to child.

anna, So you're saying the Republicans aren't any more corrupt than the Democrats? You may be right. Personally, I think Chimpy & Co. have set a new standard for future corrupt politicians to aspire to, but his most outstanding achievement has been the unprecedented increase in government incompetence. Past leaders have been reluctance to appoint unqualified idiots to important posts like FEMA, Attorney General, Secretary of State, or Secretary of Defense for example. Under Bush, you'd probably be able to count the truly well-qualified appointees on one hand.
