Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn— "then and now'' -- from a 2001 feature on the Sixties radicals reprised in Chicago magazine.
by Mark Silva
The sudden, unintended sort-of-supporting role that the ex-radical turned professor Bill Ayers has played in the political life of Barack Obama prompted Chicago magazine to turn out a 2001 profile of the Chicago professor that is drawing readers anew.
"The notorious sixties radical, still carries a whiff of that rock 'n' roll decade: the oversize wire-rim glasses that, in a certain light, reveal themselves as bifocals; a backpack over his shoulder,'' Marcia Coburn wrote then. "Yet he is also a man of the moment. For example: There is his cell phone, laid casually on the tabletop of this neighborhood Taylor Street coffee shop, and his passion for double skim lattes...
"Overall, it is not easy to imagine him as part of the Weatherman, a group that during the late sixties and early seventies openly called for revolution in America, led a violent rampaging protest in Chicago, and took credit for numerous bombings around the United States,'' she wrote. "One of the Weatherman leaders was Bernardine Dohrn, a smart, magnetic figure who, in part because of her penchant for miniskirts and knee-high boots, was dubbed "La Pasionaria of the Lunatic Left" by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover.
"After a bomb exploded accidentally and killed three of their colleagues, Ayers and Dohrn "hooked up," in the parlance of the day, and, since 1982, they have been married. This--violence, death, and white-hot rhetoric--is his past and Ayers insists he has no regrets. "I acted appropriately in the context of those times," he said.
In the context of these times, Ayers' association with Obama -- the education professor at the University of Illinois Chicago hosted a reception for Obama's state Senate campaign, and the two have served on a board together -- has drawn attention from campaign critics. Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is among those who say that Ayers has become a contributor to the community, and it's long past time to put the tumult of the Sixties in the past.

C'mon Silva, this is beneath you. It's not Richie Daley's place to say whether or not Ayers has paid his debt. Why don't we ask John Murtaugh? After all, it was his family that was attacked by the weathermen and their bombs.

This guy is more radical than Ayers ever was...
McCain Embraces Another Radical Extremist:
I'm beginning to doubt Mr Maverick/Straight-Talker's integrity. First he seeks the endorsement of radical warmonger and Catholic/Muslim/Gay-hater Pastor John Hagee. Now we learn that he's in bed with a convicted felon who promotes violence against the United States government.
The Chicago Tribune's Steve Chapman explains:
"Now a conservative radio talk-show host, [G. Gordon] Liddy spent more than 4 years in prison for his role in the 1972 Watergate burglary. That was just one element of what Liddy did, and proposed to do, in a secret White House effort to subvert the Constitution. Far from repudiating him, McCain has embraced him. ... "It's always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great."
"Liddy was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history---and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law. He has said he has no regrets about what he did, insisting that he went to jail as "a prisoner of war." ...
"In 1994, after the disastrous federal raid on the Branch Davidian compound in Waco, Texas, he gave some advice to his listeners: "Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. . . . Kill the sons of bitches."

He later backed off, saying he meant merely that people should defend themselves if federal agents came with guns blazing. But his amended guidance was not exactly conciliatory: Liddy also said he should have recommended shots to the groin instead of the head. If that wasn't enough to inflame any nut cases, he mentioned labeling targets "Bill" and "Hillary" when he practiced shooting.
Chapman says the straight-talkin' McCain campaign refused to "acknowledge" or "answer" repeated attempts to get info about the maverick's rosy relationship with the radical, unrepentant Liddy. Then again, it's only the "G-Man." In conservative circles and D.C. cocktail parties, he's just a big cuddly shoot-first-ask-questions-later Teddy bear. Perfectly pleasant gentleman. Pay no attention to the delusions of grandeur.

Did they show that fine recent photo of Barack's friend Ayers trampling the American flag?
How could anyone question Barack's judgement of character?

John E brings up a good point, why doesn't the Swamp welcome Steve Chapman's all hardcore leftwing, all-the-time views right here, after all?
He leaves on thing out, though. Liddy never tried to bomb federal buildings like Ayers and Dhorn did. Saying some stuff on talk radio is a lot different than actually committing acts of terrorism. I know, Liddy is an ex-con, but his crimes pale in comparison to Dhorn's and Ayers' in my mind. Maybe that's why the MSM ignored Steve's column.

Can anyone please explain the link between Obama and Ayers? I know they served on a board together, but who selected tham and did they have any control over the other? What was the board?
All I hear is insults, but no evidence.

You're comparing apples and oranges. Jeffy..
Libby is a convicted felon who has been inciting uprisings against the US govt. Just because he's a failure at it doesn't make him any less dangerous.

They both served on the board of the Wood Fund:
http://www.woodsfund.org/
"Woods Fund of Chicago is a grantmaking foundation whose goal is to increase opportunities for less advantaged people and communities in the metropolitan area, including the opportunity to shape decisions affecting them. The foundation works primarily as a funding partner with nonprofit organizations. Woods supports nonprofits in their important roles of engaging people in civic life, addressing the causes of poverty and other challenges facing the region, promoting more effective public policies, reducing racism and other barriers to equal opportunity, and building a sense of community and common ground. "
Real radical anti-american stuff isn't it?

While we're bringing up crooks and liars McCain hangs with, what about John Hagee?

John E., please cite where Liddy "incites uprisings against the U.S. government."
Like Jeff said, Ayers bombed buildings and his actions resulted in the loss of life. He has never renounced his actions, but instead still embraces what he did.
Liddy is a convicted felon, but his crimes do pale in comparison to that of William Ayers.

Todd:
William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, two unrepentent domestic terrorists and leaders of the 1960s Weather Underground who are also Sen. Obama's neighbors and hosts that first helped launch his political career in 1995 at their Hyde Park residence.
William Ayers not only served with Obama on the Woods Fund of Chicago from 1999 to 2002, but he also selected Obama to chair the Chicago Annenberg Challenge for eight years, 1995 to 2003, all the while being Obama's boss. Prior to that, in 1997, Ayers and Obama participated in a University of Chicago panel; in 2002, Ayers, Dohrn and Obama appeared together at a roundtable event arranged by Obama's wife, Michelle Obama.

Lil Johnny,
If you would have bothered to read my first post I did provide proof of Libby inciting uprisings against the US govt. and if you want to compare Ayers to Libby that's fine too, Ayers has reformed his life....Libby hasn't.

Any less dangerous, John? Dangerous at doing what, failing at breaking into a DNC office? When Ayers' weathermen associates failed to make a proper bomb Ayers' girlfriend died. Died from violence, John. Liddy has said millions of times that what he did during watergate was stupid, but it's his personality that's made him a successful talk show host today, not what he did back then. If Ozzie Osbourne isn't liable for what some kid who takes his lyrics literally does - and he shouldn't be - how can you POSSIBLY say Liddy should be liable for what someone does because he said something inflammatory on the air? Liberals can't have it both ways. Words either mean nothing when they're not acted on or they don't.
Ayers' actions hurt and killed people. Liddy's hurt himself and the rule of law and that eventually brought down Nixon. Liddy is a throwback to a dark time for the republican party but to suggest that he's anywhere NEAR the level of divisiveness of an unrepentant terrorist bomber like Ayers is just stupid.

Ayers is his neighbor? and "host"?
OhMyGod!!
....and they served on a board together?!?!
That does it for me, Obama has to be guilty of something.

Hey, Silva, don't forget to mention the photos of the Clintons with Ayers, oh, and don't forget to mention that Bill CLinton, while president, pardoned another of Ayer's violent associates, Susan Rosenberg. Don't forget to have your readers (with the renewed interest, spawned by people like you) read that also!f

How about McCain's close ties to the Kosovo Liberation Army, a group deemed to be terrorists by the US State Department?

Jeff,
Ayers reformed himself, Libby hasn't and he's still dangerous and on top of that, McCain is still hanging around him...
Posted by: John E | May 6, 2008 5:16 PM
I'll try this again!
Jeff,
Ayers has reformed his life, Libby hasn't and he still poses a danger to America. This is an issue because McCain calls Libby a confidant.

Probably the same reason we're not asking all the people who lost their life savings in the S&L debacles a la Keating whether they think McCain was punished enough. I know YOU seem to think he paid his debts with it -- are YOU the one who gets to say?

What do we now know about the human brain? it doesn't mature until about age 26.
So their schemeing began in repsonse to horrendous state inflicted violence when their brains were not mature.
That said--they harmed their own cause. They watched (well not WATCHED) a friend die as part of their misguided efforts.
But they didn't KILL anyone,.
They quit the group when it went sideways.
And they've done good things since.

Everyone knows about the fundraiser and the overlapping board seats on the Woods Fund of Chicago.
What has not been widely reported is that in 1995 Bill Ayers was instrumental in founding the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, committed to public school reform. Barack Obama was the first chairman, and both were involved for the first few years of the groups existence (it eventually failed and closed up; Obama then served on a successor board with Bill Ayers' brother and father.
From Ayer's online resume:
" Co-Founder and Co-Chair, Chicago School Reform Collaborative (The Annenberg Challenge), 1995-2000.
From Slate, April 2008, about Obama:
A decade later, when Obama was a second-year state senator, he served on the board of several local education foundations that had supported the councils and chaired the board for the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, a $50 million philanthropic effort that supported local control.

America, America, God shed his grace on thee.
Then why are we letting an anti-American, unpatriotic, charlatan who stated from his own lips before speaking to a packed crowd in North Carolina, "Watch me wow these white folks" be our nominee?
Obama will lose in November and all because we, America allowed a few spoken words to woo the White House away from us.
His associations show us Obama lacks judgment.
I suppose under God's guidance, since I lived through the Bush years, I will survive this fool's one four year term unscathed if America allows this fraud into the White House.
70% of we Democrats will not vote for Obama; however, since Michigan and Florida do not count I suppose our voices do not either.
God Bless America.
