Obama-Clinton: Dream ticket for McCain: The Swamp

The Swamp

by Peter Brown

The combination of Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton running together could well become the dream Democratic ticket -- for Sen. John McCain.

For those who want the Democrats to win the White House, however, it might turn out to be more of a nightmare.

That's the case because such a ticket would mean the presidential nominee has passed on picking a running mate with greater cross-over appeal. Not to mention that it would provide Sen. McCain with plenty of ammunition to use in November.

The talk about the two Democratic senators running together makes great news media speculation, especially as their contest continues longer than anyone had thought possible just a few months ago.

It just doesn't make a lot of sense.

See the rest of the column from the Wall Street Journal's Political Perceptions:

True, their sharing the ticket would bring joy to the hearts of Democrats from Detroit to Denver.

That might help deal with the growing concern among Democrats that the tight and increasingly fractious nomination campaign will make it difficult to put the party back together once the nominee is decided. To be sure, the way things are going there will certainly be millions with hard feelings when their candidate loses.

But the increased Obama-Clinton bickering makes it less likely they will join forces to fight Sen. McCain in November, and logic says doing so would do little to help the party capture the White House.

Both Sens. Obama and Clinton are from true-blue Frost Belt states - Illinois and New York, respectively - that are likely to vote Democratic no matter who is on the ticket. What the Democrats need is someone who can make them competitive in the South or the Southwest, areas where they hope to crack recent GOP dominance.

If the eventual nominee needs to use the vice presidency to capture Democrats for whom he or she was not the first choice, the nominee will have ignored the larger need - to attract enough independents and disaffected Republicans to win in November.

Victorious presidential candidates generally pick running mates who make up for some of the nominee's own perceived weakness: Texas Gov. George W. Bush picked Washington insider, former defense secretary and longtime congressman Dick Cheney in 2000 because Mr. Bush lacked foreign affairs or D.C. experience. Northerner John Kerry, a U.S. senator from Massachusetts, the 2004 Democratic nominee, picked son of the South John Edwards, his Senate colleague from North Carolina.

It was almost a half-century ago that youthful Sen. John F. Kennedy picked Sen. Lyndon Johnson for vice president, even though the two thoroughly disliked each other. Yet, LBJ's experience and Texas roots filled a needed void on Kennedy's ticket.

Simply put, both Sens. Obama and Clinton have a demographic problem with working-class white men, and he with whites overall.

April Quinnipiac University polls in the key Electoral College battlegrounds of Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania found that in an Obama-McCain contest, a fifth to more than a quarter of white Democrats said they would defect to Republican McCain.

Both Sens. Obama and Clinton lack foreign affairs or military experience, and would be considered liberal based on their congressional voting records.

Logic dictates that either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton would benefit by picking a white, politically moderate man with foreign policy or military experience as their running mate. That would be doubly true if that person came from a key swing state like Ohio or Florida.

Now, it may be difficult for either to find such a perfect running mate, but under no circumstances does Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama fit those criteria.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tried to discourage an Obama-Clinton or Clinton-Obama ticket, saying her years of experience tells her such a union is "impossible."

She noted that Sen. Clinton has suggested Sen. McCain would be a better commander-in-chief than Sen. Obama, the type of comment that the Republicans would spend millions of dollars to advertise. But that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to words out of either Sen. Clinton or Sen. Obama's mouth about the other that would be a bonanza for the Republicans.

The November election often boils down to a fight for the roughly 20% of the electorate not wedded to either party. In 2008, those voters are, as they have been in the past, white political moderates.

That's why the dream Democratic running mate - at least for those who want a Democratic victory - is white, male and to the right of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton.

OBAMA NOT WRIGHT FOR U.S. http://www.dontvoteobama.net.
That’s what Obama gets for his continued support and defense of the Rev Wright. Obama stated in his speech“Wright is like an uncle you love and respect” As imperfect as he may be, he has been family to me for so many years, I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community” Wright “Calls for Justice and Repair,” followed a statement in which he declared that “The Biblical principle of true repentance is that the offended party is given compensation to make up for that which has been stolen from them, the losses that have been inflicted upon them and their families.” A reparations plan for blacks could extract several trillion dollars from American taxpayers’ pockets.

Obamas obviously support his feelings of anti-America and white hatred that the church endoreses to stay for 20 years also why would a parent continue to raise their young daughters in that atmosphere if the Obamas did not have the same beliefs! No one says Obama cant attend the church for 20 years, or raise his daughters in that atmosphere, what we ARE SAYING is that HE COULD NOT REPRESENT ALL AMERCIANS AS U.S. PRESIDENT! Rev Wright was a paid advisor on Obamas campaign! Obama and David Axelrod insisted that Obama be the black candidate early in SC when they tried to spin it on Bill Clinton, it worked for the biased tabloid media like CNN cronies, since then, we ALL have come to realize Obama has problems with the truth as have learned in the last month, THERES ABSOLUTLY NO CHANGE WITH OBAMA, HE HAS DRAGGED U.S. BACK TO THE 60'S RACIAL DIVIDE at a time when our country needed to unite. He is NOT new politics and cannot bring parties together. Obama need to drop out NOW!

Didn't read past the headline on this one......you have got to be kidding at this point!

If Obama wins, Edwards is a much better VP to complete the next generation story. Actually, same answer if Clinton wins.

In addition, if Clinton wins, Obama will never be able to run for POTUS again--assuming the loss stems from Rev. Wright. He will have a distinguished career in the senate and possibly cabinet seats.

BTW, he definitely seemed flustered and on his heels yesterday on the campaign trail. If Obama has an ounce of fighter in him, then he better show it and use it now.

I don't believe this dream ticket will ever happen. If it does, I don't believe this will be a dream for McBush. He will have enough trouble with the war he thought was a "good idea" and willing to continue till.....who knows how long...he, like Bush has no idea how long. He is the one singing ditties about bombing Iran. The stupidity of this kind of leadership just doesn't wash with the American people. Bush used our patriotism against us and most are aware of this now. The pom pom wavers on these threads may think the all important "flag pin" issue means something, but the truth is America is sick of this nonsense. Maybe they can come up with a reason to vote for McBush rather than why to vote against someone. The war and the economy are Bushs' baby, and McBush will have this around his neck like a lead weight.

Judging from the outbursts yesterday from the man Obama JUDGED to be his man of the cloth--I'd say the top of the ticket had BETTER be HILLARY.

The Dream Team: Hillary and Jim Beam!

A shot and a beer in the White House!

Harvard Scholar Barack Obama is his own man who will better the country by reinstating Our Constitution back to the American People

Wright is an entertainer and should be thought of that way, though he does know history better than 90% of Americans.

Hillary and Billy HillBilly owes $109,000,000 favor dollars back to South American cartels and can't serve the American People and South America simultaneously.

McCentury McCain represents Bush's third term of total failure and international embarrassment. McCain lacks knowledge in every area and will need a dictionary to keep up with Harvard Scholar Barack Obama during the debates.

The American People love Barack Obama, because Barack Obama loves the American People and will serve his country greater than any president in history.

Knock, the real question is can we afford another so-called "conservative" who believes in massive debt and sticking future generations with our unpaid bills?

I think Wright's comments were good for Wright and Obama. At least folks know who the man REALLY is, and believe me, that is better than what the sound bites made him out to be. Arrogant, Defiant Veteran is better than being a straight out biggoted loon which folks were saying. Obama is not Wright and is despite his PASTOR and GRANDMOTHER, a uniter from the present generation. Have faith in the future. He is better than Liary and McSame put together! And trust me, McSame's closet is going to be exposed also. He is not the little boyscout the Republicans have made him out to be. His past is mired in adultery and divorce.

Knock,

Where did you get these ridiculous numbers? First of all, the IRS allows homeowners who have lived in their house for at least two years to exclude up to $250,000 in capital gains, or "profit" as you call it, when you sell your home. No one is proposing to eliminate this deduction from the IRS.

Regarding the inheritance tax, you are wrong on multiple levels. Bush did not "repeal" the estate tax. For 2008, it is 45%. That is, however, after the first $2 Million inherited. This was raised under Bush from the previous $1 Million exemption. I would gladly pay 45% after the first million that I inherited, but hey, thats just me, I am not greedy...

As for your tax cut information, I can only say that the Bush tax cuts are designed to "expire" in 2010 anyhow. And the revision to the old tax laws are hardly the hit that you are portraying. Whatever nutball posted the article you copied and pasted should check his numbers a little more before spreading such inaccurate nonsense. But besides that, great post!

A Hilary/Obama ticket would be the most laughable political move in years. For these two to come out and talk about how they've put their differences aside and are now buddies and love each other, blah blah blah....would be the biggest, most obvious, most nauseating spin job that I can remember. Let's hope it happens!

sorry folks wont b a election of any dem the machine is fixed real good you fools need to save your energy and all that hate for the gym take it out on a bag or tread mill "relax"

Andrew,

Edwards? He would be a terrible pick as VP. He has zero foreign policy experience, and could deliver neither his home state (SC) nor the state where he served as a Senator (NC) when he was Kerry's running mate in 2004. Edwards' last shred of political relevancy will be who he endorses for the dem nominee, and he is taking his sweet time.

I enjoyed Peter's column today but wanted to add a thought about the Bill Clinton-Al Gore ticket in 1992. True, they were not opponents for the nomination so there was no bad blood.
By picking Gore, Clinton broke with the conventional wisdom of having two diverse candidates in age, region and political balance by having two youthful, Southern Democrats from the center of the party. That pairing emphasized the change from the 12 years of Reagan/Bush/Quayle and energized Democratic and independent voters. It also forced Republicans to spend time and resources in states that had not been competitive for Democrats in recent presidential elections.

face it - ANY OF THE THREE MAJOR CANDIDATES HAS QUITE A DECENT CHANCE OF WINNING AND NONE OF THE THREE MAJOR CANDIDATES IS A SURE THING - NOT EVEN CLOSE

IT IS TIME TO SIMPLIFY THIS DECISION AND STOP THE SIDESHOW CRAP
there is but ONE simple and humble question that is the number one priority before us and MANY are trying their best to distract US from that ONE issue;

IF you love your country, then you have a moral obligation to overlook electability, race, age, gender and past associations and vote for the individual who would most like do the best job for your country !

(if you care more about other issues such as party or race or gender or age than you do about your country, then do what your going to do and get it over with)

but to those who CARE about the future of you country:

WE who care about our country MUST be promoting whichever candidate is most likely to be the best President for the United States of America - period.

and that is the only issue before us

let's face it - there is no crystal ball - we can't be SURE of what will happen in the future -- and if you think you can, then see a doctor as there are medicines for your condition - do not go stephen king on us and hide in a balcony with a sniper rifle (like christopher walken) at a town hall so you can get rid of the "evil" candidate (martin sheen).

All kidding aside, the TRUTH is we can't see the future but we still are obligated to try our best to choose the person who would most likely do the best job for our country.

if you like none of the above, then vote for none of the above

but otherwise vote/support for whomever you think will be best for your country and do not let yourself be distracted by issues of race or gender or electability or age

Think about WHY everyone is talking lately about who would most likely be the best "candidate" instead of who would most likely be the best "president"

the answer is -- hillary desperately wants the "who would be the best candidate ?" question to be THE main/only topic for debate instead of "who would make the best president ?" and therefore hillary constantly steers the debate in that direction (24/7) !!!!!!!!!

*****************************

she does this because of all the obvious baggage she carries that would very likely make her a less effective president than she could be

AND

she also steers the question in that direction because she CANNOT pass obama in popular vote or elected delegates, so she MUST make something like "electabilty" the EXCUSE for superdelegates to vote AGAINST the will of the voters.

*************************

everyone knows bill C. would be a HUGE distraction if hillary were able to become president

*************************

everyone knows there would be trust issues from "day one" if Hillary were elected

***************************

and everyone knows that another clinton presidency would bring along with it a spirit of divisiveness which would continue to permeate politics for the next decade as it has done for the last two decades

**************************

everyone knows hillary's health plan has zero chance of making it into law

**************************

the ONLY argument hillary can make for being a better president than obama is the experience argument - an argument which not only does NOT stand up to scrutiny for her but IF it is true that experience matters most, then we should all vote for mccain

if we love our country, we should be focusing upon who would most likely be best president of our country - and nothing else - no matter how much someone tries to distract us from that task (AND REST ASSURED THEY WILL NOT EVER, EVER STOP TRYING TO DISTRACT US FROM THAT TASK UNTIL THE ISSUE HAS BEEN DECIDED)

EVERYONE knows barack obama will never be president

Knock, your post is completely wrong, and I think you intended it to be.

Both Obama and Clinton's tax increases ONLY AFFECT THE TOP ONE PERCENT OF TAXPAYERS -- basically, they only affect those paying the very top rate.

For the majority of taxpayers under $100,000, the taxes paid under Obama and Clinton are LOWER than those under McCain. And no-one under the payroll cap (just under 100K) sees an increase. Got it???

How is that? Let's take Obama as an example.

1) -- a payroll tax credit of up to $1,000 per family
2) -- a universal mortgage interest credit for low-to-middle income homeowners
3) -- eliminating income taxes for seniors making less than 50K.

What are his tax increases?

1) restoring the Clinton-era 39.6% top rate for people over approx. 350K a year.
2) levying some payroll taxes on income above the payroll cap (currently income above 100K a year isn't subject to any payroll tax).

See how people under 100K a year aren't affected by the increases?

What about McCain? He's so busy lowering capital gains and corporate taxes he doesn't have any money at all left over for people under 40K, and precious little for those under 65K. That's right, your taxes under McCain, if you earn less than 65K in taxable income, will be HIGHER than under Obama or Clinton.

If you're one of the approximately 15 percent of taxpayers who is between 65K and 130K, the McCain plan may benefit you more, and will definitely benefit you more between 100K and 130K. But, as I say, that's only 15 percent of the country even if you include everyone down to 65K.

Knock, don't peddle disinformation.

Excuse me while I gag. No president in his right mind would want Hillary as Veep for the most obvious reason. Talk about the enemy at your back. Same reason Obama would never accept her. Want a great candidate for vice president? Colin Powell. When all the blacks desert the Demos for dumping Obama, Powell could attract them plus lots of independents.

brigitte (aka just another planted hillarite) typifies EVERTYTHING wrong about this campaign - NOBODY (at least of the three main candidates) can be ruled out as presidential winner as long as enough Americans think they are the best individual for the job and then votes their conscience - hillarites want no one to vote their conscience because no one with a conscience would want a liar in office that would hurt our country so badly as she (do we really need three terrible presidents in a row)

the "electability" issue is PURELY a distraction to make some kind of WIERD case for selecting the nominee who DID NOT get the most votes or delegates

do not be fooled by the "brigettes" out there (there are many clones of her out there) - they have an agenda and it is NOT what is best for our country

This election is making history -

One is a cranky old woman, the other a black man who has a racist minister and the final contestant an old relict geezer from the stone ages... go figure..

Some choice we have, what a collection losers.. All we have is an idiot, an imbecile and a moron running for prez..

Tax update, Alternative Minimum Tax, AMT affects many middle class tax payers now and will continue to take a wider bite every year. Hilary and Barack have no intention to eliminate this regressive additional income tax. Grant it Bush had 8 years to eliminate it too while he was using it too, but McCain is th only candidate serious about reforming taxes for all people and eliminating this tax and others that unfairly target the working class. Incidentally whoever posted the quip about accuracy should have noted that people earning over $65,000 a year pay the majority of taxes collected in this country so any tax reform would obviously affect them more than the working poor who already pay little if any taxes.

Hillary Clinton is not FROM the state of New York. She didn't live there until she ran for Senate in 2000 and cannot be said to be "representative" of all things New York. The Swamp just lost a lot of credibility.

Hillary is the most electable. Barack Obama never really had a chance and after his 'bitter' remarks, his uncle Wright controversy, his Tony Rezko connections etc, he is looking really worn out. Politics is a dirty business, Obama. You need to be tough ( like Hillary) in order to survive.

anyone doubting the DIS-information tactics of the clintons needs to do no more than read the comments by brigette above in sequence - THE TALKING POINT MANDATED FROM THE LET'S MANIPULATE THE MEDIA CLINTONITES IS LIKE PROGRAMMING LITTLE ROBOTS - brigette is not allowed to talk about ANYTHING except electability - it's a joke because electability is NOT the main issue and it is NOT an exact science - electability is largely about opinion and even after I directly and logically challenged her on those points just look what is her response - nothing - she just goes back to "electability" and electability ONLY because she isn't allowed to talk about anything else (also the clintons FEAR the issue is not even logically defensible because electability is truly NOT the main issue, it is not something that can EVER be guaranteed and ALL other issues besides electability favor obama and mccain over hillary)

Obama should be president...if Hillary wants to be in the show, she should try to be his Vice President. Look, she's an outright liar. I do not trust her and I do not want her in The White House. We know about all the shame and countless scandals that come with The Clintons. Been there, done that. Time for a change...Vote Obama!!!!!!!!!!!

An Obama-Clinton dream team would be out of the question, for two reasons:

1. Hillary and her husband Bill are inextricably joined at the hip. Choosing Hillary as Obamas running mate would mean choosing Bill as well. And given the Clintons unquenchable thirst for power, they would not be inclined to play-second fiddle, especially to someone who wrested from them the political prize they had taken for granted. From day one the Clinton duo would be scheming to
to usurp control of the Presidency.

2. The news media have made much of Obamas ties with his pastor, but until a student questioned Chelsea Clinton about the Monica Lewinski affair and someone produced a video debunking Hillarys account of her dodging sniper bullets in Bosnia, hardly any mention was made in the media of the Clintons past. Come general elections, however, one can expect that McCains handlers or, if not them, his supporters in the Blogosphere will dredge up the well-documented lies, sleaze and corruption that have marked the Clintons since they teamed up 38 years ago.

Clearly, an Obama-Clinton dream ticket is a sure formula for losing the general election. Some voters may still think that the Clintons are for real, but once they know the truth and see through them, theyll be bolting to McCain, or staying home the day of the election.

My advice to the powers-that-be in Democratic Party: Dump the Clintons. They no longer bring anything of value to the table, if they ever did.
