As part of his "Forgotten Places" tour, not to be confused with his recently completed "bio" tour, Sen. John McCain, the all-but-official Republican presidential nominee, was traveling in Alabama yesterday.

The tour included a lot of grips and grins with African Americans, so many that it appeared, at least from the photos, that the only famous Republican who might've hugged a black woman  yesterday more than McCain was Colin Powell :)

We suspect a lot of those African Americans were supporters of Sen. Barack Obama's Democratic presidential campaign, just judging from the overwhelming support Obama received in the South. But who doesn't mind taking a picture with a political celebrity?

One of his stops was Gee's Bend, famous for the quilts made by the African-American ladies known as the Women of Gee's Bend." (Wish we had known beforehand he was going. Maybe we could have gotten one of reporter colleagues to pick up a quilt for us.)

It's a safe bet that all of these neglected places now being visited by the McCain caravan will soon be mostly forgotten again. But at least they're getting their moment in the campaign sun.

Here's a photographic sampler from the Republican senators travels Monday in "forgotten" America.

You know where should be a stop on McCain's forgotten places tour? Capitol Hill. He seems to have forgotten where it is.

When's he going to stop by there to introduce the Gas Tax Holiday Legislation he keeps talking about?

Good for Senator McCain - maybe these folks will realize that backing the democrats for about 50 years have gotten them nowhere.

Definnition of insanity - doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

With all due respect to the soldier, McCain, I would like to remind the electorate, that Senator McCain has been enjoying the benefits, including the financial rewards of being a member of " The Military-Industrial Complex "!!! I wonder if, prior to his union with a wealthy woman, he ever had to pay by the sweat of his own brow, or the work of his own hands, his own health insurance? I am pretty certain, that he didn't have to pay, by those means. Those are the places, I hope that Senator McCain will not forget to visit and to consult with those very people, who have had to make hard choices, including food or healthcare, since George W. Bush has been in office!!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

You know Terry, I compare the 199x's and the 200x's so far - and find that 199x's were REALLY good years.

- wages were good, excellent, as a matter of fact
- gas prices weren't exorbitant
- national debt was what, half of what it is now?

Maybe you can enlighten me as to all the great things that was brought to us during the 200x's that what passes for Republicans can be so proud of.

Taking our National debt from 0 to 9 trillion under bush is a small point Terry seems to miss.

"maybe these folks will realize that backing the democrats for about 50 years have gotten them nowhere."

Terry's definition of "nowhere"

Ending School Segregation.

The Voting Rights act of 1964.

Decreasing the disparity between average white and black incomes.

Defending Affirmative action plans to help address the consequences of generations of discrimination.

Multiple elected African American officials at all levels of office (and hopefully an African American president soon.) The Republicans have not one african american elected official in a statewide office or at the federal level. Not one.

A vote for McCain is a vote for more of the same. Check out his hypocritical interview about Obama's relationship with Aryes.

Jack - the 90's were pretty good - its damn lucky Bill Clinton had the PC/internet revolution to keep the economy humming and Newt Gingrich and the conservative Republican congress to keep the spending in check. If you remember, Clinton said he saw $200 billion dollar deficits ($300 billion in today's dollars) for as far as th eyes could see. Speaker Gingrich said the baudget would be balanced in 5 years - we know who was right.

I'm making more money now than I did in the 90's, as most people I know are.

Gas prices were lower in the 90's - worldwide economy was slumping - demand was lower. China and India were not yet on the scene as economic powers. Also, the supply of oil was there due to exlporation that took place in the 80's.

During the 2000's we have taken terrorism on instead of punting it down the road. Income taxes are lower for all taxpayers.

Bill R - we had no national debt in 2000? Please quote your source.

JT - I believe the civil rights legislation of the 1960's was passed with more Republican support than democratic. Didn't Senator Al Gore Sr and Senator Fulbright (Pres Clinton's mentor) vote against that legislation.

As far as Republicans not having elected statewide/nationwide office holders - it is hard when 90% of African-Americans vote democratic and the 10% remaining are ridiculed as Uncle Tom's for being Republicans.

Well, you think you could elect ONE somewhere if the Republicans truly were acting in the interest of the African American community, couldn't you? Did it ever occur to you that there might be a logical reason why 90% of African Americans vote Democratic? Surely you can't believe that entire community is blind to their own self interest?

JT,

I'm not sure why 90% of African-Americans vote democratic, but if they want to be quit having the democrats take them for granted, maybe they should look at the conservative side of the coin instead of the side of larger gov't.

These days, "conservatives" HAVE been the side of larger government. That's part of the reason why Ron Paul was the only GOP candidate who excited black people and young people. Ignoring Ron Paul is why the Republicans are about to lose. Our "choice" is between a statist and 2 socialists. The idea that any of the 3 would shrink government appreciably is laughable.

Why hasn't the news media(or even Obama or Clinton) asked the hard question of the Bush administration. "Why is it Mr Bush an Mr Chaney, that at the beginning of your terms, oil was going for $20 a barrel and is now going for $120 a barrel? Is it a coincidence that at that time it cost $40 a barrel to take oil out of the Texas ground and definitely not profitable to do so.? Is it also a coincidence that both of you and your families are oil barons?
What is wrong with the American public to be so gullible as not to think that these guys could care less about the American public and their dreams? Why do they think their president would not lie to make another billion?
They are surrounded by wall street manipulators and con men.
Greed is an unbelievable powerful incentive to screw everyone in one's path.
The Bush's and Chaney's should be required to make their tax statements and the statements of their family own business's public.
