The Swamp

By Mark Silva

It didn't take long for the Clinton campaign to take Sen. Barack Obama's remarks about middle-class voters and bitterness to the air in Pennyslvania, where the senator from New York hopes to seal a victory over the senator from Illinois in a primary election eight days away.

The ad opens with an announcer reminding viewers of what they have been hearing for three days on the news, yet doesn't open with the central noun that Obama used in describing the disaffection of small-town voters with their government -- bitterness -- but rather heads straight to more power-packed words for this audience: guns and religion: "Barack Obama said that people in small towns 'cling to guns or religion...as a way to explain their frustrations.'”

Obama, admitting that he chose "clumsy'' words, insists that voters indeed harbor bitterness about government not listening to them. Religion, he says, is a "bulwark'' in tough times, and hunting is a cherished tradition. But this is an opponent's ad, not a debate:

"I was very insulted by Barack Obama,'' a woman in Clinton's new ad, called "Pennsylvania," states. "It just shows how out of touch Barack Obama is,'' says a man outside what seems to be a church voicing words Clinton uses about Obama's remarks on the stump.

"I'm not clinging to my faith out of frustration and bitterness. I find that my faith is very uplifting,'' says another woman. "The good people of Pennsylvania deserve a lot better than what Barack Obama said,'' says another man, supported by the woman again: "Hillary does understand the citizens of Pennsylvania better,'' and a third woman: "Hillary Clinton has been fighting for people like us her whole life.''

Obama has been outspending Clinton by three-to-one in TV ads in Pennsylvania -- with nearly $10 million invested there between them. But these words may well resonate two to three times more loudly than that message of '"change" and "hope'' Obama has delivered.

If Clinton's lips are moving it means she's lying again:

In an attempt to paint Barack Obama as Elitest Hillary Clinton has made a miss-statement of her own that has got herself into hot waters. The problem though is you have to remember Hillary Clinton is only human. When she makes mis-statements we are suppose to forgive and forget not like Obama. Those are the Clinton rules!

"You know, my dad took me out behind the cottage that my grandfather built on a little lake called Lake Winola outside of Scranton and taught be how to shoot when I was a little girl," she said.

"You know, some people now continue to teach their children and their grandchildren. It's part of culture. It's part of a way of life. People enjoy hunting and shooting because it's an important part of who they are. Not because they are bitter."

Did Hillary Clinton just pull a Nick Romney out of her pocket?

Will Clinton be able to sell this new self to gun rights enthusiasts and hunters?

"Her name is synonymous with gun control, like Rosie O'Donnell," says Cox, so she will have "a very, very tough time."

Hillary Clinton a life long member of the NRA who has a gun in one hand and a bible in the next!
Hillary Clinton, Because only God can save us from seeing images of Hillary Clinton with a gun!

This is becoming nihilistic.
-
Dems, wake up. You are our only hope, and a thin hope that is for sure, considering the political cowardice of modern, post labour Democratic politicians.
-
You need to be supporting the other candie, like them or not. You are confusing a primary process which is supposed to be about fine points of policy difference, with a scorched earth campaign of personal destruction.
-
I predict right now that John McCain will win in November.
You are handing Bush a third term right this minute, today.
-
Git it? Got it? Good... Now, straighten up and fly right, fools.

Who are the idiots out there who actually support Clinton anyway?

Every other word that comes out of her mouth is a bold-faced lie.

Early 90's Hillary Clinton spoke of not standing by her man like Tammy Wynette and not baking cookies...

-yet now that she's running for president, recipes and pretending to love guns is the modus operandi.

-people who are actually in touch are bitter and angry. It doesnt surprise me at all.

Obama is going to clean your lying clock, Hillary!

"CLINTON SPEAKS"

NOW WOMAN TO WOMAN, LET NO MAN TELL YOU WHY YOU "CLING" TO YOUR FAITH. WOMAN TO WOMAN, LET NO MAN, JOHN MCCAIN OR BARRACK OBAMA TELL YOU, YOU ARE "BITTER"

NOW WOMAN TO WOMAN AND IF HE IS YO MAN!

VOTE FOR ME, BECAUSE I WON'T LET HIM EITHER!

I KNOW IT WON'T BE THAT EASY. BUT COME OUT OF YOUR KITCHENS, COME OUT OF YOUR BEDROOMS, COME OUT OF YOUR CLOSETS. LET NO MAN TELL YOU WHY YOU "CLING" TO YOUR LIFE!

VOTE FOR ME AND I WON'T LET HIM EITHER!

BECAUSE "MEN" WE TOO HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT.

OBAMA/CLINTON 2008!

LONG LIVE NANCY PELOSI!

"They're the people Clinton 'has been fighting for
her whole life"?

According to that last person in the ad.

Since I can't really discern many people for whom that assertion would hold up, I admit that I'm a bit stumped.

Maybe they're wealthy people (dressed casually). Or perhaps they're war contractors, or Credit Card executives, or Wal-Mart bigwigs whom Hillary supports or maybe their the wife of an ex-President who is worth $109 million?

Or, as what I think is the most likely explanation, they're just misinformed. Because the ill-informed and the misinformed are the ones Clinton is counting on. They are the people she is trying to create.

It is sad when truth becomes a dirty word.

This is what I am bitter about.

My vote is for Senator Obama.

Aaron Burr and Alexander Hamilton found an effective way to settle their differences over disparaging remarks. Alexander was, by some accounts, the winner since he no longer had to endure his self inflicted torture. Aaron, on the other hand, was forced to spend the rest of his life dreaming and struggling for, what he imagined, could have been.

Since neither camp seems to remember that there are critical issues facing this country right now, perhaps they can take their respective camps to Mexico or Columbia and test Hillary's stated familiarity with weapons. They might consider doing us a favor and taking McCain with them. The good thing is that the winner won't be able to come back.

In other words, they should go try to entertain each other anally where someone cares.

Morris and others, read what your party is saying. Both are liars, both pander to the lowest common denominator, both will sink our economy, both will embolden our enemies, both can't be trusted. Not my words, comes from majority of demo posting. Nonetheless, the liberal media brainwashed among you will choose one or the other.

I thought all you Lefty Loons bought into this:

I mean, wasn't there a Michael Douglas movie made about that time about the angry white man? Called Falling Down??

Anyway, it's such a pleasure to see the Clintoons do to Obamamania what they did to everyone else in the 1990s! I thought the Clintoons were the Left's favorite couple??

Obama BUSTED!
This is more about the arrogance of the Obama campaign than anything else. In an age of American Idol and the Internet, an elitist group of cynical and condescending campaign staff lead by David Axelrod is conditioning and manipulating a new generation of voter. These voters respond virally to professional, well-crafted You Tubes, silver-tongued speeches, chantable meaningless slogans, carefully selected campaign suits (for each specific audience) and highly customized advertising graphics (for each and every region & class of voter!). We end up with s a sexy, stunning at-first, invented candidate named Obama upon which we can blindly project any and all of our varied dreams and aspirations.
But eventually Obama's mask has to come off. Each day that passes another layer is peeled away. And underneath is none other than a slick, fancy talking, small minded, small time Chicago politician with lots of hidden personal and political agendas.

I didn't think it was possible but Obama makes Clinton look good. Why do the dems do this every 4 years? God they are hopeless. Please get Colin Powell to run, he would be a true uniter.

Hillary the gun slinging, card carrrying NRA memeber giving speachs on Religion??? The American people ARE BITTER!

Bitter at the way John McCains buddy George Bush has helped throw the economy in the toilet while Dick Cheneys fat cat corporate friends make Iraq their own pivate boondoggle.

Hillary will always have this gun footage to live down.

Hillary's 3:00am Call Of Duty!!!

In comments long before and comments just after, Obama's said that it isn't negative for people to cling to these things but natural and acceptable. The elitism here is talking about these people, in an effort to flatter them, as if they should all be shining happy people holding hands, as if it were offensive to say that years of failure have made people bitter about government and its approach to the economy.

We're all told to be nice and quiet about how bad things are getting, because really we should be glad to get anything at all. That's the Republican line on the economy, what they've said time and time again when challenged on the robustness of our economic condition. There are echoes of that in the that whole "rolling up the sleeves" schtick. This is the happy talk that these people really can't take too much of anymore. Obama, thankfully, is telling the truth: people are angry. The elitists are the people trying to tell us we're not, because they're truly afraid of us when we're angry.

This man is dangerous
Promises everything, But will give nothing
Will be the next worst President, along the likes of Jimmy Carter.
Will sit down with terrorists, like Jimmy Carter
He is a danger to our country,
Go McCain, Experience, Heroism and Toughness that America needs.

I sure am glad Senator Obama made that " bitterness " remark. He spoke the truth and it set him, and a lot of us, free. As Stephen Daugherty wrote, "people are angry" and all the bullying, the other candidates wish to heap on him for telling it "like it is", doesn't matter. In the end, they are the losers, for them, winning is more important than the truth!!!! How unfortunate, for us, for them, for the entire country!!
SUPPORT OUR TROOPS, BRING THEM HOME, ALIVE. NOW.

I get it--the Obama movement suffers from a severe bipolar disorder. They're filled with an audacity of hope one day--to justify their movement, and the next day they're filled with the audacity of bitterness--to justify why others don't join in with their religion and guns. Are they clinging to Obama out of hope or bitterness? I can't tell anymore. It's like a mood ring. Whatever matches the new rhetoric I guess. Their either calling for change out of hope, or change out of bitterness. Can't be both. That would make for a lot of bitter hopefuls calling for change. Doesn't sound too promising. Revenge never does.

"Bill Clinton - 1991"

That's nice. In this case, is Better than Clinton Barack parsing the same ideas here as Big Foot in Mouth Bill. Hypocrisy. Or is Better than Clinton Barack conceding Clinton ideas are timeless and good enough. Hypocrisy. Why don't we get a quote from Mrs. Obama to figure that out. It's more apropo to quote the spouse on their spouses views--we know they are mentally inseparable. Sexism. Preferably something from a decade ago since candidates and their spouses can't think independently, or evolve with time. Sexism.

not sure, but it seems that most of the above comments (after "Comments:") seem to be proBHObama - He's my guy too, and he doesn't strike me as an elitist (snob), but as a down-to-earth guy (and elite human/statesman/politician) who might be in it for all the right reasons... but what do I know, ...he might actually be the anti-Christ (and you thought Cheney/Bush was bad)

I don't have a t.v. (saves me a lot of money and time and I'm happier) so I do appreciate Mark Silva's posting of the latest ad on the issue at hand here.
But there are very few relevant posts to matters at hand here, sadly.
Dave D is right about the inanity of these posts.
Starting with the person who apparently does not even KNOW who Sojourner Truth IS (Can't spell the name so it's Sojourner Untruths--well the untruths part of it is right) and on down to the irrelevant posts.
Axelrod's campaign is about the sizzle, not the steak. And even the sizzle is fake--know how that food glows in the ads? Glycerine.
Am posting this again in case a narrowcast reader is attracted to the ad and actually wants to read something that is not attacking a fellow blogger (except for the person stealing my handle--even the labels of the gobamas are unoriginal), something that took some time to research and edit.
Again--this is an appeal for the Obama crowd to realize that some of us who LEFT his campaign are still trying to tell people who've been attacking us non-stop--we are not your enemy.
We who knew you had a phone list FULL of Republicans wasting our time (and voting Obama cynically up starting in Iowa--they only started admitting it when the Edwards bloggers revealed it), were being RUDE to middle-aged women in Iowa wanting to HELP US with the Obama campaign.
So don't attack. We're not your enemy. ( for those who've already read what's below--it's a repeat--but if the editor of the blog sees fit to republish it, here it is).
All the attacks today on Hilary and anyone defending her against the scurilous attacks of the junior Senator are yet more reasons why this nationally 'unvetted' candidate cannot be the top of our ticket. HRC is NOT the enemy.
What’s wrong with waiting 8 years, Obama and Gobamas? Wait for LBJ’s 3rd generation of Dixiecrats to kick the bucket.
I used to say that. And I may say that again.
But, give a listen to the audio posted by Mayhill Fowler (the not so pretty girl recently on the bus who savvily recorded the disturbing speech in California).
It’s a disturbing speech and shaking a ‘you are naughty’ finger at Hilary Clinton will not work.
In fact, the whole strategy for ‘dealing’ with his comment disturbs me even more.
Because, there seems to be a pattern emerging from not just the Obama campaign, but from the lips of Obama himself:
Exclude from the ‘movement’ or otherwise silence the non-enthusiastic or
‘offending’ middle aged white or elderly women.
Listen to the audio Mayhill recorded—and be sure to thank her and show your support for her. She will need it, if Tavis Smiley is any example of how people non-conforming to the Obama message of ‘hope’ get treated.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mayhill-fowler/obama-exclusive-audio-on_b_96333.html
His comments to the crowd that we need ‘new people’ in the Democratic party kind of chilled me to the bone. I find him very intolerant. I find his campaign intolerant. He responded to a question about his ability to really unite the party after such a divisive campaign by saying that “people get their feelings hurt” and they’ll be back (basically).
I don’t think that’s the case. People left his campaign because we felt it was using the wrong strategy and felt (but couldn’t quite put our finger on WHY it was fundamentally wrong-minded.
In his speech last night, in which he mentioned that ‘abstinence” and teaching appropriate behavior would be a good idea—heck—the people he BASHED last night have been speaking about this stuff for years! In fact, the Planned Parenthood crowd in Kalamazoo, Michigan (who later came to Chicago) managed to get a K-12 systematic sex education curriculum passed in the late 1970s. The JOHN BIRCH society worked to get it removed from the schools—and the Planned Parenthood clinic was actually bombed.
Would 70s style peaceful activists be part of the mature crowd Obama now wants replaced with his Gobama crowd? No. Not if he can help it.
That’s what it’s looking like to me.
Particularly when I heard Obama last night say talk about the pro-choice people he said were reluctant to infuse a “moral dimension’ into the abortion issue.
Patently false. Shame on Barack Obama.
Shame on him also for the recent clarification that in fact he DID attend a Muslim school (the public schools in Indonesia were like the community—women didn’t have to wear the veil, but…) seems like he was earlier being less than forthcoming. Even in liberal Islamic settings, women have a back of the bus status. I do NOT think Obama has been honest enough about this.
I think he’s sexist. Not just for the relentless bashing of Geraldine Ferraro, but for something really revealing in his speech last night, he ‘could not remember’ whether he’d had a conversation with his daughters about God. Well, if you’re in a 50’s throwback marriage where mommy is the main person interacting with the kids when they’re not in the expensive, enriching U of C daycare---then you perhaps are leaving a lot of that stuff to the wifey.
And perhaps that’s why Michelle (back when she let reporters cover her fund-raising) cut loose with the “ladies against women” style rant against Hilary (“How can she handle the White House when she ‘can’t manage’ her own house (sic).”)
The problem with sexism or any ‘ism’ is the elitism at its heart.
But there’s another reason why the Obamas must mature more before they’re at the top of the ticket.
They’ve let the newfound celebrity go to their heads.
Call it the ‘diva factor’.
Bonnie Raitt (you might remember she and Jackson Browne played a New Hampshire benefit for John Edwards’ superior approach—since adopted by Hilary Clinton—regarding nuclear power, greenhouse gases, and whatnot) chafed at being called a diva on a blues show last night. She said it reminded her of the old saw “Don’t look Miss Ross in the eye as she heads on stage.”
Barack Obama as diva.
Annie Oakley at least was a class act.

Stephen D.

Well said.

The big money boys that own and run America need a good scare, IMO. With their cream dream of globalized 'free' capital markets a reality they are getting greedy, and trampling the little guy and gal on their way to fabulous wealth. Somebody needs to stop them. 'Bama is as good or better a choice as anybody, though I wonder at the ability of anyone to change the present course.

No, Stephen--we're not 'afraid' of you when you're angry--we're afraid FOR you.
This blind anger that's inflicted upon anyone who challenges even SLIGHTLY the Obama campaign strategy is going to cost us the White House if we're not able to find a way to defuse the blind rage (it's not inspiration) that Obama's ham-handed techniques have triggered, and, sadly fostered.
Were not for the brave taping of Senator Obama speaking to his supporters in one of the wealthiest suburbs on the planet, we would not know, I feel, the REAL Obama.
Many of us had sensed it, and fled his ill-advised campaign.
But brave Mayhill Fowler preserved his comments. And instead of attacking Hilary Clinton, a wise man, a humble man, a spiritual man would engage in some sort of navel-gazing and figure out where he went so wrong, became so hate-filled.
For, even in the tape, you get some notion of how privileged he's been.
And still he sees himself as victim in this-as needing and entitled to strike out at Hilary Clinton for his own un-doing.
Here's the url:
Please listen clear your emotions, and listen to it in its entirety before you respond.
And please remember that the person posting this, the person using the cynical name Obama blasted Clinton with today, is on your side--we must take the White House and the Congress back decisively this time--for us, the country, and the planet.

"I was very insulted by Barack Obama,''

LOL.

White folk are insulted because Barack said they "cling" to religion and guns in tough times. Yet they want black folk to "get over" 350 years of slavery, Jim Crow, and discrimination.

LOL.

You people sure have a lot of nerve.

For a really good view of the PA 'bitter' comments from a reporter from PA, go to http://www.philly.com/dailynews/columnists/john_baer/20080414_John_Baer__Decades_of_working-class_neglect_-_now_that_s_insulting.html

And read some of the comments in support of the article.

The Obama camp ought to counter with PA supporters who say, "'Bitter'? I'm not 'bitter.' I'm pissed-off!"

This is child's play.

We have young men and women losing limbs, becoming mentally impaired or dying in Iraq because two Senators were so elitist that they thought the US knew what was best for Iraq.

We have school-aged children dying in our streets and we have college-aged students suffering under the weight of student loans and the threat of someone losing his marbles on campus.

And the people of PA are so-sensitive that they can't bear to be called "bitter"?

Ha...ha... It's laughable. I thought the politics in Philly were tough. Those people need to stay as far away from ChiTown as possible. If they think being called "bitter" is an insult, they don't want to be anywhere near the City Council of the great city of Chicago or the General Assembly in Springfield.

Apparently, "p" is the first letter in at least one other word that describes Pennsylvanians.

The Clintons are so desperate that they will stoop to nothing, in lying and deceiving the voters. Hillary tells lies causally. Her husband is no different. If that is not elitist, what is? He tells 7 lies in a 15 word statement, about Hillary’s Bosnia’s trip. What do the Clintons think of the voters? Do they think the voters are fools when they underestimate the intelligence of the hardworking voters in small town America? Are they so out of touch with the conditions of the small man that they think that small town America does not feel the present economic crunch? Bill Clinton himself recently agreed with Senator Obama when he stated that the U.S. is in a deplorable state because of high gas price , war in Iraq, foreclosure, and recession. Hillary keeps saying she needs to clean up. My question is, why does Hillary need to clean up after Bush if people are not frustrated, bitter and angry?
Being bitter, angry and frustrated does not mean Americans are not optimistic. Small Town Americans are proud. They are optimistic. And yes they are bitter and frustrated but optimistic nevertheless. One emotion is not exclusive of the other. People are human. They feel. They suffer when they cannot feed their kids, pay their bills, keep their homes, and have a job. They are bitter, frustrated and angry when their pregnant sister dies because she has no insurance. They are bitter, frustrated and angry when presidential campaigns owe them money after they have performed a service. They are bitter, frustrated and angry when political candidates patronize them with lies about Bosnian snipers. They are bitter angry and frustrated when their child in Iraq dies; a victim of a faceless enemies.
Yes, they are bitter angry and frustrated. They have all rights to their humanity. But instead of killing, fighting or doing crime, these hard working people cling to something they are familiar with. They cling to something that will never let them down; their traditions and hometown culture. Like people every where when you are in pain, you cling to something. It can be negative things like drugs and crime or it can be positive things like family, religion, faith, church, hunting, and sports. I reiterate it’s optimism and pride that make small town people cling to their hunting instead of killing. It’s optimism pride and faith that makes them cling to their religion instead of delusion. But yes they are bitter, angry and frustrated; let’s not steal their feeling, from them. Everything else has been stolen.Clintons get out of your, $109 million bubble and get in touch, get real. As for you McCain, you get angry; bitter and frustrated and negatively hit and attack colleagues and family. Small Town America choose the positive alternative; faith, hunting and HOPE.

DrDave nailed it, imo. If you listen to the audio of that San Francisco fundraiser, you will hear that Barack says to his supporters about to go off to Pa that some of the Pa citizens will be like the folks in San Francisco, (cosmopolitan, enlightened) and some will be like down state Illinois (gun loving, gay bashing, bible thumping, antipathy filled crackers). Get a life -- he dissed his own state to make political points with the San Francisco crowd.

This isn't the general -- talking about how republican wedge issues find a home (bitter, disillusioned people embrace them) has no meaning in a democrat primary.

Either the man's head is already into the general -- very arrogant -- or he thinks since he is a city type, he's better than down staters. Considering that he thinks living in Indonesia when he was 6 yrs old makes him worldly, I'd say he is puffed up enough to believe he is better.

She clings to her cheating man...

How did it go? “Like the tread off a tire, the charm is rubbing off Obama,” Garrisson Keiller said it much better last week.
But, the words don’t need to be ‘right on’ for you to get what he meant, do they?
Outspent three to one, Hilary Clinton is winning Pennsylvania—because the Obama campaign has failed to do what it needed to do—truly connect with people who WANT to beat John McCain.
This failure began in Iowa, when Republicans cynically crossed over to vote Obama up, and when a flawed caucus system made people fear displeasing a boss doing the caucus.
Worse, some feared being falsely labeled racist if they caucused for Kucinich, or Edwards, or Hilary.
And the Obama campaign, as it became clear it might lose to Hilary prior to the Pennsylvania primary, began mau-mauing fellow Democrats or accusing anyone who disagreed with them in the SLIGHTEST of being racist. And I would not be surprised to see people being harassed in state jobs by the Obama/Daley machine.
Apparently Obama missed the seminal analysis of the problem with a ‘no holds barred’ effort to ‘win’ by rank opportunists. We’ve seen this before, I believe.
The Obamas and the gobamas would be well served to sit down and read Tom Wolfe’s analysis of how rank opportunists tore apart the harmony so shortly enjoyed in the 70’s in his book, “Radical Chic & Mau-Mauing the Flak Catchers.”
Hilary Clinton is attacked as though she were the anti-Christ. Her supporters are berated and mocked and demeaned in the name of Obama on these blogs.
Meanwhile, the press has been harassed (sometimes even by the candidates’ wife) for just doing their jobs.
This is shameful.
If Senator Obama does not get control of his staff and his followers soon, there will be no way Hilary Clinton and Bill Clinton can save his political career from self-destruction.

To even think that Clinton would support ANY gun-owner's rights is completely off-the-wall! And, now we find that Wal-Mart is setting up a program to futher stigmatize gun owners (remember who used to set on the board of Wal-Mart). Clinton, Obama and Bloomburg all fit in the same mold, anti gun, anti military, anti common folks!

Jon Stewart said it well on the Daily Show last night, in reference to everybody tossing around the word "elitist" : "Just a word to the Presidential nominees... c'mere, I gotta tell you something. The job you're applying for? They might carve your head in a mountain. If you don't think you're better than us, then what the *bleep* are you doing?"

Amazing how every time something goes against Hillary or she doesn't like what's been said, it becomes "irrelevant"; twisted around so it sounds bad for the other party; or "isn't important". It really makes one wonder how she'd deal with issues in office -- ooops, don't like this issue, so it's irrelevant.

To have approved these attack commercials, Hillary must have been drinking shots again!
