President Bush, who has called on the nation’s leading industrial powers to join the U.S. in a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions – short of the mutual cap on emissions that the Bush administration has refused to accept with the Kyoto Protocol – is playing his cards for the annual G-8 summit.

“Over the past seven years, my administration has taken a rational, balanced approach to these serious challenges,’’ Bush will maintain in an address on climate change today. “We believe we need to protect our environment. We believe we need to strengthen our energy security. We believe we need to grow our economy. And we believe the only way to achieve these goals is through continued advances in technology.

Critics claim that Bush’s goal of capping the growth in U.S. emissions by 2025 is weak and an ineffective approach to a more immediate crisis

“After squandering seven years, President Bush still refuses to respond to alarm bells. His strategy announced today is like trying to douse a 10-alarm fire with a garden hose—it is completely inadequate,’’ says Daniel Weiss, director of climate strategy at the Democratic-leaning Center for American Progress.

Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works, said today: “The [resident’s plan to have America stand by while greenhouse gases reach dangerous levels and threaten America and the world is worse than doing nothing – it is the height of irresponsibility.’’

Friends of the Earth President Brent Blackwelder said this: "The idea that President Bush is serious about fighting global warming is laughable... This is the last whimper from an increasingly irrelevant president. Bush will be gone in a matter of months and our country will then finally have an opportunity to show the leadership the world has been calling for.”

Before the anti-Global Climate Change crowd chimes in that we experienced a cooler winter than what had been the trend over the past decades, I'd like to point out that a large swath of the Western US is about 30 degrees warmer, with summer like temps and extreme drought. I got these facts from science!!!! Where did you get yours, anti-Global Climate Change crowd?

I can't wait until some idiot tries to score points by pointing out that the phenomenon is now referred to as Global Climate Change and not so much as Global Warming. Well idiots its because you're stupid. You think that if it's not getting incrementally warmer each following day, that it's all a big lie. That's like visiting a tropical RAIN Forest when it's not raining and claiming that it's a desert climate. You people are so dumb with your hatred of credible science and observation of facts.

"BUSH & CHINA SPEAKS"

YOU WANT "CLIMATE CONTROL" BETTER AIR QUALITY. THEN WE MAKE EVERYTHING YOU NEED.
YOU NO MAKE NOTHING, YOU NO DO NOTHING, JUST GO SHOPPING.

NO CAFTA, NO FARM BILL, NO FARM BILL NO FARMING IN AMERICA.

NO FARMING, MEANS NO WATER USE, NO FARMING MEANS MORE GAS FOR CHINA. NO FARM BILL, MEANS "BIGGER CHINESE DAIRY" LESS COWS EATING THE GRASS AND DELIVERING MILK.

NO FARM BILL, NO "MILK FACTORIES" SPEWING MILK ACROSS AMERICA. NO FARM BILL, MORE MILK FACTORIES IN CHINA, SPEWING SYNTHETIC MILK TO MORE FACTORIES IN AMERICA.

TOGETHER WE WILL "FILLIBUSTER, VETO EVERY DOMESTIC BILL IN AMERICA SO THAT AMERICA WILL BE DEPENDENT UPON HIM AND ONLY HIM.

TOGETHER, CHINA AND MY ADMINISTRATION WILL VETO AMERICA BACK TO THE "BRITISH/CHINESE/STOCKHOLM CALIFORINIA" TRADE DAYS.

NO CAFTA, NO AMERICAN FARMER. NO CAFTA, DON'T WORRY ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE BECAUSE NO FACTORIES OR FARMING WILL HAPPEN!

JUST CLEAN SKIES AND "CLIMATE CONTROL" CHINESE GOODS.

ALBERTO, I MEAN MUKASEY, GET MY "VETO" PEN OUT FOR ME!

TENET, I MEAN, FRED, DAVID, LIBBY, SOMEONE GET MY "STATE OF THE UNION" SPEECHWRITER ON MY "SECURED LAND LINE"

The mouthbreathing knuckledragging Wingnuts only care about killing and maiming people for oil, everything else (the economy etc) is just words to these nuts...

"Group Ranks McCain Last on Environmental Votes"
By Juliet Eilperin

While Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) has touted his support for the environment throughout his presidential campaign, the League of Conservation Voters gave him a zero rating Thursday on its 2007 congressional scorecard -- making him the lowest-ranking lawmaker among all 535 members of Congress.

McCain, who has a lifetime rating of 24 from the group, missed every single vote the environmental group identified as critical last year. Carl Pope, executive director of the advocacy group Sierra Club, said in a statement that the senator scored lower than some lawmakers who had died in the middle of the term.

"We were appalled two weeks ago when John McCain was the only senator who chose to skip a crucial vote on the future of clean energy in America-dooming the measure to fail by just a single vote," Pope said. "As it turns out, this was merely the most recent example of a clear pattern of missing the most important votes on energy and the environment -- as his abysmal LCV score clearly demonstrates."

John at 2:10, the West was 30 degrees over average the past couple of days. The reality is the West U.S. had abundant snow this past winter, with more expected today. IN fact, there was an item just yesterday about all the snow mover equipment breaking down in the Yellowstone area because of the depth of the snow. The Pacific Northwest had 400 to 600 inches of snow this winter.
John at 2:10, the fact is ocean temperatures have stalled at best and even fallen the past few years. The fact is China was shut down most of this winter because of record snow and cold.
John at 2:10 and the rest of the global warming enthusiats, the fact is Earth went through a mini ice age from the mid 1300s to the mid 1800s. Since the mini ice age ended in the mid 1800s, Earth's temps have increased about 1 degree C, which would make sense if a mini ice age ended.
The fact is Earth has a history of climatic cycles. The fact is Chicago was buried under more than a mile of glacier at one time. The fact is the glaciers covered more than half of the United States at one time. The fact is Mars has warmed recently due to increased solar activity. The fact is that same increase in solar activity affects Earth too.

Having said all of that, there is nothing wrong, in fact it is a good thing, to do what we can to have a cleaner and better planet. But it's also fact that if you don't like the high energy prices now, you will hate them later if we put too harsh of caps on emissions. Today;s energy prices will be dwarfed under that scenario.

John D,
The FACT is that IF increased solar activity was responsible for warming:
1) The warming would be uniform among all layers of the Earths atmosphere. This is not the case. In FACT, the lower troposphere has WARMED and the upper stratosphere has COOLED. That's not what a hotter sun would do Little Johnny D.
2) the immensity of the oceans means the amount of heat required to warm them even a little is ENORMOUS. From 1955 to 2000, the world's oceans warmed .7 degrees Farenheit. In the same period, the sun increased its energy output less than 0.1%. The extra solar output can no more account for that than holding a candle under a pot can acount for boiling a gallon of water. Let me put it to you another way. Solar output rises and falls over an 11 year cycle. The high point in the cycle raises surface temperaturs 0.2 degree Farenheit at most, much less than the increase that has been measured between the late 1800s and now.

PS Does La Nina affect the oceans surface temperatures?? I wonder in which direction Little Johnny D?

He hasn't BEEN interested in the condition of the Earth...except for controlling the OIL, that is,...WHY NOW???

Looks like Dumb Dumb Janet (after all she believes a .7 C increase equates to a 34 F increase) did some cutting and pasting.

Janet, there is a La Nina in the western Pacific. The western Pacific. What about the rest of the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian oceans? This year there has been a La Nina, in 2006 we had an El Nino. Fact is ocean temps, which has much to do with the Earth's temps since most of this planet is water, have stabilized for several years now.
Also Dumb Dumb Janet, scientists say increased solar activity has warmed Mars, the same woud happen here. Furthermore, warming or cooling WOULD NOT be unform across the layers of the atmosphere.
The fact is Dumb Dumb Janet that in the past year or so places like Buenos Aires, Cape Town and other saw snow, something they hadn't seen in decades. Australia had its coldest June on record last year. Much of the North America set records for snowfall this winter. Did La Nina play a role? More than likely. BUT DD Janet, La Nina played no role last year in the cold Southern Hemisphere winter.
Please, though DD Janet, please explain natural planet cycles such as North America and Chicago under glaciers. Please explain the mini ice age from the mid 1300s to mid 1800s.

“Over the past seven years, my administration has taken a rational, balanced approach to these serious challenges’’

By ignoring them.

Fortunately, the swamp has it's own global warming expert who tells us we can ignore those scientist guys because global temperatures have fluctuated in the past. I feel so much better now.

Yes, Tom O, Earth has a HISTORY of temperature fluctuations. Not a damn thing we can do about them either.

Also, there are scores of scientists who debunk the man-made global warming issue. And, there are scores of scientists who say man-made global warming is a fact. Course, many of those scientists are getting millions in government grants. And many so-called global warming experts are making a bundle pushing the theory as fact all the while they do the things they claim cause global warming.

Use to be a serious global warming skeptic. Use to be. No more. THERE IS global warming in Tx. It's caused by mainly two things - (1) that fiery thing up in the sky and (2)those oh so pretty Latina Babes. It's all good.

John D, And the global warming deniers are mostly funded by the fossil fuel industry. They are more credible than the government funded guys?

I think we have nothing to lose by reducing fossil fuel use and spending some tax dollars to implement alternative energy sources. Imagine investing $500 billion on grid upgrades and solar, wind, and geothermal energy instead of throwing it away in Iraq. We'd reduce our dependence on imported oil, create jobs in the US, cut greenhouse gas output, and reduce pollution. That looks like a better investment to me than the endless occupation of Iraq.

Little Johnny D,
It's hilarious how in one breath you can say the sun is causing global warming and then in the next claim that LARGE, BLUE ocean temps are leveling off and in some cases cooling. You are too dumb to see the contradiction in those claims. And then you maintain that warming would not be uniform among ALL layers of the atmosphere. Please explain how that could possibly be true.

Tom O, most scientists who do not believe in man-made global warming are not funded by the evil oil companies.

In regard to alternative energy. Let's look at wind power. Are you referring to the same wind power that Ted Kennedy and John Kerry don't want off the coast of Massachusetts? Or what about the wind power that is responsible for the slaughter of millions of song birds every year?

Solar and geothermal energy do have a role to play, but neither is a cure all and neither is practical everywhere or in all applications.
