The United Nations Security Council approved a new round of sanctions against Iran in a near-unanimous vote Monday afternoon.
Adding on to the previous two rounds, meant to punish Iran for refusing to suspend its uranium enrichment program, the resolution bans trade with Iran in goods which have both civilian and military uses. It also authorizes inspections of shipments to and from Iran, by sea and air, that are suspected of carrying banned items.
The vote was 14-0, with Indonesia abstaining.
"Because Iran has continued its defiance of the international community, including three UN Security Council resolutions as well as multiple resolutions from the IAEA Board of Governors, we are now faced again with ratcheting up the pressure and ratcheting up the sanctions," said State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey.
Casey cknowledged that the sanctions were not as strong as they could have been, because of compromises made to accommodate other Security Council members.
Meanwhile, long-delayed talks between Iran and the U.S. over security in Iraq have been postponed yet again. While a date had been set for last week, Iran, whose president just wrapped up a two-day visit to Baghdad, put them off once more for unstated reasons.
Iran had been pushing for months for these talks - the one channel between Tehran and Washington - to take place, so it's not clear why it would now seek a delay. Some suspect the Iranians want to broaden the discussion.
"They want to expand the talks to include the nuclear issue, which we are absolutely not going to do," said one senior administration official.
The last round of U.S.-Iran talks took place last summer, and were suspended when U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker called them unproductive in his September testimony before Congress.

I can't understand why they took that vote. Doesn't the world understand that the worlds' savior is about to become Prez. of the U.S.A. ( Rezko beef not withstanding).
Then our savior can just fly over to Iran and "rap to that dude" a little bit. and it will be all good.

Wow, the UN passed some resolution banning trade with Iran.
I'm sure they'll be as effective as the UN's sanctions against trade with Saddam Hussein's Iraq. If you remember, it was the UN inspectors themselves who took bribes from Iraq to evade those sanctions, in the "Oil for Bribes" scandal.
The U.N. stands for Useless Nullity.

If Hiliary is elected president then that means that a majority of the voters have decided to install her as the Commander and Chief of the Armed Forces. I suppose that makes Bill the First Man, with not a whole lot to do except manage the female aids. That sounds like the fox guarding the hen house dosen’t it. But wait, Bill can also devote quite a bit of time to his foundation and valued contributors. What a deal, it sounds like having your cake and eating it too. Or to make the situation even more profoundly absurd if something happens to Hiliary then Bill’s back. Vote Republican and your worst concerns are over.

Alice Palmer,
The U.N. is only as strong or autonomous as its member states want it to be. I amagine you'll agree that we have a pretty big voice in that say so.
The way I see it is you have 1 of 2 goals to consider. Make the U.N. stronger or abolish it.
I personally like it the way it is. Just enough stick to lean but not enough to take a swing.

Typical nonsense here from the dumbest of all mankind: the Loony Left.
Here is an item in which the UN Security Council UNANIMOUSLY voted for sanctions on Iran (because Iran is not behaving and up to no good) and the dingbats dump on McCain.
All I can say is God help us if the Left ever gets control of this country. Terrorists worldwide would celebrate and the U.S. would be bombed week after week.

That's funny little Johnny Hairpiece.
It was the Republic Party nitwits like you and your pal Don B bin Laden that told us we should ignore the UN and invade Iraq because they had non-existent WMD's.

We all need to remember that the United States suffered the greatest terrorist attack ever under Dubya Bush's watch. As the events were unfolding, Bush sat there dumb-founded and smarmy chickenhawk Cheney was hurried away to an undisclosed location. Bush is also directly responsible for all of the dead and wounded U.S. soldiers and the chaos and destruction in Iraq. The hypocritical and dysfunctional Republican party deserves to be swept away in a landslide this November.

Back in 1974 the United States approved nuclear energy for Iran. But that was back in the day when Iran was a client of the US.
More than 30 years later, with oil prices through the roof, international concerns over global warming etc etc, the US and Britain say Iran doesn't need nuclear power and can only draw one conclusion from Iran's desire to have nuclear energy - and that is to have a nuclear weapons program.
Note the use of "we believe" or "we are not convinced of Iran's peaceful intentions" in speeches by British and US officials.
The sanctions are based on a hunch and the so-called "smoking laptop" procured by a group listed as a terrorist organisation by the State Department and the EU.
They also fly in the face of evidence provided by UN nuclear agency, the IAEA, and the latest NIE report.
Where has logic and common sense gone?

Breitbart's summary of the "sanctions" is amusing reading.
The toothless tiger UN:
1) schedules yet another "report";
2) vows "further appropriate measures";
3) calls for more "inspections", if "reasonable", and for countries to exercise more "vigilance";
4) calls on all countries to "act";
5) And "reaffirms" the UNs prior resolutions on Iran--the same resolutions Iran is currently ignoring.
Reminds me of the double super secret probation of "Animal House". What a joke.

Oh really Doug, I seem to recall a considered debate that played out on the Senate floor in Oct. 2002 . I seem to recall a bipartisan majority of about 75% giving Mr. Bush authorization, and now your side are all running from their votes. You really shouldn't try to revise history Doug, it only makes you look dumber than your own statement.

Maybe it’s time we take a vacation from enforcing U.N. sanctions. We spend too much in lives and treasure doing this kind of stuff, and other U.N. members don’t contribute as much as we do. Besides, who said we had to play world cop? What an honor it must be for us to saddle ourselves with the expense of chasing down bad guys while many others – including China and Russia – get to leave off contributing to the effort and go on improving their economies. And, of course, we have the heart-felt thanks of the Bosnians, Kosovars, Somali’s and Arabs (i.e. for protecting S.A. and liberating Kuwait) – or do we?
We might do well to leave our European and Arabic “friends” alone to deal with Iran’s reprise of “bully in the neighborhood.” We probably wouldn’t have had Iran rattling it saber right now if Saddam Hussein was still in power in Iraq. Having a bully like Saddam around sometimes has the effect of distracting other bullies. Maybe the gridlock of leaving all the others to deal with Iran without us might just give us the needed opportunity to catch our economic breath. We should simply stick to protecting ourselves from terrorists.

And now Iran is all buddy-buddy with Maliki and the Iraq government.
When Sadaam was there, the 2 countries kept each other at bay, since they were mortal enemies. Which actually kept the region more stable.
But I guess that is what our brave soldiers have died for. To make Iran stronger. Right GW?
Way to go "Einstein".

Its time for the United Nations to show the world that its a viable institution. They have not shown me very much! They generally foul things up instead of fixing them. I am sick and tired of the illegal dealing(Kofi Anan)among others.Either get the job done, or close up shop. The building with a little help would make a fine parking garage. grwnd,graph fyp;lyyrbnayisie

How can the libs disagree with the UN Security Council??? Don't they consider it a genuine ruling body that overrides the rule of our own elected gov't? I mean... gee... how can the UN remain relevant if we don't give them all the power they think they deserve???
Come on people... stop finding Iran so innocent and show some backbone. If they won't stop on their own, they'll need to be stopped for the sake of their numerous enemies... or maybe we should just let Barack and Iran buddy up. That's sound thinking.

Chris, the world is distrustful of Iran because in violation of their duties under the non-proliferation treaty, which they are a member, they had a clandestine nuclear program for 15+ years. There is also evidence from the NIE report that Iran had a nuclear weapons program, something they previously denied. That is where the suspicion comes from, and I can't say that it is unreasonable. The Security Council has demanded full disclosure of nuclear activity, both past and present. Iran is not complying with those demands, and is making a mockery out of the UN.
Posted by: Herbie H. | March 4, 2008 12:16 PM
Herbie, points taken. But South Africa and Israel collaborated on nuclear weapons until SA fessed up and decided to quit. There is no UN pressure on Israel for full disclosure.
Iran was actually, to my understanding, under no obligation to disclose anything because at that time it had not signed on to the Additional Protocols. It has now, and the IAEA can find no evidence of a diversion of nuclear materials.
Research, including research into the feasibility of a nuclear weapons program, is not actually declarable - only when events move beyond academic research are countries obliged to make reports to the IAEA. Even taking the material from that highly suspect "laptop of death" there is no hard evidence that Iran moved beyond academic research.
