The Swamp

What a couple of cards are Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

The senators from Illinois and New York may be battling over a close delegate count in the Democratic Party’s campaign for president, but the limited-edition series of Obama campaign cards is outselling the limited-edition Clinton cards at auction online, according to Topps, maker of baseball cards.

The 2008 Series 1 baseball cards include some presidential campaign cards, autographed, of course.

An Obama card, limited to a printing of 15, just fetched $3,122.99 on eBay, according to Tops. A Clinton card, limited to 18, was purchased for $1,325.

Republican Sen. John McCain’s card is trailing, Topps reports, with bidding at $1,200 and five days left in the auction.

“As Obama’s popularity continues to increase, so do the value of his cards – and fans are willing to pay for them,” says Clay Luraschi, Topps’ Baseball Brand Manager.

The company’s limited “Presidential Cut Signature Collection’’ features autographs from five different presidential candidates: Obama, Clinton, McCain, John Edwards and Fred Thompson.

Seems they might have made some money on Mike Huckabee.

Speaking of cards, maybe McCain can come up with a few more people to put on those stupid playing cards they used in Iraq. He could put Catholics and jews on the Ace of spades and things like that. I forget what card our constitution was on.

Mark Silva won't report on the Gallup and LA Times/Bloomberg polls showing McCain beating both Hillary and Obama, but will report on an auction of baseball cards by Topps (spelled "Tops" in paragraph 3 above).

Will someone explain how the baseball card is more newsworthy than the polls? Especially for a source that usually loves to report on polls?

This is the best you can cover on an important matter as a presidential primary? What if a presidential candidate claimed that his view on an issue drew its power from the Sermon on the Mount, which was delivered by no less an authority than Jesus Christ? What if that view contradicted 2,000 years of church moral teaching? Wouldn't this be a major news story?

It would if it involved a Republican. Or even another Democrat. But when it comes to Barack Obama, the media continue to ignore newsworthy topics and refuse to give the public substantive details about the senator's views on many key issues.

On Sunday, at Hocking College in Nelsonville, Ohio, Sen. Obama promoted homosexual legal civil unions in answer to a question posed by a pastor, and then threw out this challenge: "If people find that controversial then I would just refer them to the Sermon on the Mount, which I think is, in my mind, for my faith, more central than an obscure passage in Romans."

Not one major network covered this, nor did the wire services, nor did the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times or other major newspapers. The Post and Los Angeles Times had brief references on their blogs. A couple of papers had a brief mention of Obama proclaiming that he is a Christian, not a Muslim, but that was it. The senator was right about Jesus reminding us of the inherent dignity of all human beings. We are supposed to love without measure. But this should include discouraging people from engaging in behaviors with known moral, social and health risks, not using government power to tempt them into error.

Can you imagine what the media reaction would be if, say, John McCain stated that he thought adultery ought to get special legal protection and that if anyone found it controversial, he or she should look up the Sermon on the Mount?

Bruce...Are you some kind of sissy girlyman whiner? For 2 years I have watched you complain and whine. Is this some kind of stay the course tactics? Stay the course didn't work before and it won't work now.

The free market has spoken!!! What it says is that Americans don't want crusty, cranky old John McCain.

Brucie:

What about the polls showing Obama beating McCain??

That's right - they don't count because they don't fit Brucie's political views.

Obama in a Dodger uniform?
