The Swamp

by James Oliphant

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice spoke at a breakfast today of powerful economic conservatives in Washington, say The Huffington Post and The Washington Note. They speculate Rice is courting conservatives to position herself as a possible vice presidential pick of Sen. John McCain.

Rice attended one of the regular meetings held by Grover Norquist, a Washington lobbyist and head of Americans for Tax Reform, which pushes for tax relief. (That's the group that gave Mike Huckabee so much trouble earlier this year.)

According to writer Steve Clemons, who was told of the event:

At the semi-secret gatherings which Republican political hopefuls migrate to to get the blessing of not only Norquist but the diverse parts of the nation's conservative money and political machinery, Norquist gives everyone in the room 3 minutes to pitch their cause or issue. I have attended before, but if one wants to attend again -- no one may write or speak about the internal discussion or who attended.

Nevertheless, Rice apparently wowed the group, all the while maintaining that she had no interest in staying in politics. Her presence on the McCain ticket would be interesting. Not only would it make the administration's management of the Iraq war a front-burner issue for the duration of the campaign, but it could also blunt any advantage gained by a Clinton-Obama pairing in the history-making department.

"Condi Rice making a VP pitch"?

Really? how would she fit this in with her shoe shopping hobby?

"CONDI SPEAKS"

NO I'M NOT IN WASHINGTON.
NO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT AN AUGMENTATION OF THIS 5TH YEAR OCCUPATION IN IRAQ.
NO THE "SURGE" DIDN'T WORK, WE PAID FOR "PEACE"

NO I STILL HAVEN'T FIGURED OUT WHY I DIDN'T READ THE PRESIDENTIAL DAILY BRIEFING LEADING UP TO SEPTEMBER 11, 2001.

NO I HAVE NOT FOUND OUT WHY THERE HAVE BEEN SO MANY "BREACHES" IN THE SECRETARY OF STATE DEPARTMENT.

YES I STILL DO NOT LIKE GEORGE TENENT.

YES I'M BLACK. YES I GO TO CHURCH, JUST NOT JOHN MCCAINS.

YES I LIKE SHOES, AND YES I STILL COULD CARE LESS ABOUT "KATRINA" REFUGEES IN AMERICA.

NO I'M NOT A PUPPET, I AM A BRIGHT BLACK WOMAN IN AMERICA WHO JUST HAPPENED TO SPEAK "RUSSIAN" AT A TIME WHERE "RUSSIANS" WERE THINKING DEMOCRATICALLY UNTIL WE "INVADED" IRAQ AND THE MIDDLE EAST.

NOW I'M JUST A PUPPET IN GEORGE BUSH'S ADMINISTRATION, AND I LOOK GOOD STANDING NEXT TO HIM, KINDA LIKE OBAMA AND CLINTON WHEN DEBATING.

HOW CUTE HUH AMERICA, AREN'T THEY.

JOHN AND I WOULDN'T LOOK AS APPEALING BUT PROBABLY JUST THE "TYPICAL" MIXED RELATIONSHIP, EITHER PERSONAL OR BUSINESS ALIKE!

I'd go for it. Would really put into perspective how little foreign policy experience hillary really has, side by side with a VICE-presidential candidate who could do figure-eights around her, backwards and blindfolded.

Condi for Vice President would be brilliant. She is a well-educated, well-spoken African-American Woman who can talk circles around Obama and Clinton. She has actual first-hand experience - even if you don't agree with her every stance on the issues. And, quite honestly, it takes race and gender out of the equation and we can actually have a Presidential race centered around the issues. Here is a woman who is not proud of her country for the first time in her adult life, but believes in America enough to be a patriot and serve her country instead of just talking about it and not really doing anything about it like Michelle Obama.

Could she please stop letting her incompetent employees into the candidates' passport records first?

Condoleeza Rice is an opportunist who has not succeeded at anything in her tenure both as National Security Advisor (when she did not read the intelligence on the potential 9/11 threat) or as Secretary of State. She has been nothing more than a figurehead whose understanding of foreign policy equaled the best places to shop for shoes. Bush/Cheney ran the show; Rice was their token affirmative action figurehead who was a double asset because she fulfilled the gender and diverse race criteria. Rice couldn't even negotiate in good faith for fear that her bosses would renege on any peace deals she made.

Michelle Obama is the gift that keeps on giving. See her call all Americans ignorant: http://minnesotamonitor.com/showDiary.do?diaryId=3526

There has been a movement for many years to get Ms. Rice on a Presidential ticket for either POTUS or veep. Whether you like this idea or not, no one knows where she stands on critical issues, such as abortion, affirmative action, gays in the military, Social Security, taxes, etc.

Before considering voting for her for any office, I would have to know where she stands on these issues.

How many other people feel the same way ?

Doesn't McBush have enough pawns already?

What's the big deal? Dayum!, Americans are ignorant, they voted in Bush twice, didn't they? (sort of).

In a January speech at the University of South Carolina, First Lady aspirant Michelle Obama made remarks making the rounds on the internet today.

Talking about her experience at Princeton where she hung with a largely African-American crowd, she said, "We don’t like being pushed outside of our comfort zones. You know it right here on this campus. You know people sitting at different tables- you all living in different dorms. I was there. You’re not talking to each other, taking advantage that you’re in this diverse community. Because sometimes it’s easier to hold on to your own stereotypes and misconceptions. It makes you feel justified in your own ignorance. That’s America. So the challenge for us is are we ready for change?"

I'm sure we all know what she's talking about when she reflects on the comfort many of us feel with those of our specific cultural or ethnic groups.

But her comments are under fire by many conservative commentators because of her construct that seems to imply that feeling justified in one's own ignorance in somehow quintessentially "America."

The Obama campaign says that's a mis-interpretation of her comments, that it was the proclivity for "comfort zones" that she thought was so "America."

(As opposed to the ethnic and cultural open minds in Europe, Asia and Africa, I suppose?)

How's the shopping in that Iraqi market, Jeff?

I don't even know what Condi stands for (gay marriage?) other than what Bush and Cheney tell her to do...of course that would make her a perfect pick for Crazy McCain since he has already bought into the Bush doctrine hook, line and sinker.

This is exactly what the McCain campaign needs. I can't think of a better way to remind people that McCain is just going to be four more years of Bush.

Move over Rev. Wright, Mrs. Obama is taking your place on the hate America democratic agenda.

... and then he could bring back Rumsfeld...

Condi Rice as VP, and/or eventually a Presidential Candidate would be brilliant. She has shown many admirable leadership qualities during the course of her stellar career, and has proven to be one of the United States greatest assets. It's rather unfortunate that some of you, due to different political ideologies have seen fit to degrade the character & professionalism of Condi Rice. I suppose that's why I'm an independent...much too tired of the incessant party politics. Regarding the events leading up to 09/11/2001, fact is, any fair minded individual looking for the truth and the facts will also ask..."what actions did president Bill Clinton (and apparently by extension, Hillary) take to avert the growing threat of terrorism during the course of his presidency?". And, what documents detailing President Clinton's time in office as it relates to his administration on terrorism did Sandy Berger destroy at the National Archives? I'm neither a Republican nor a Democrat...but I do possess a lil' bit of old fashioned common sense.

No, that's Jeff

Condi will not be veep. The republican base will not vote for a black. The corporate owned republican leadership will never allow a black to wield power. (Colin & Condi did what they were told) Republican moderates that may vote for a black will just as soon vote for Barack. Therefore, there is nothing to be gained and everything to lose by putting Condi on the ticket.

Q: Why shouldn't this be seen as an intelligence failure, that you were unable to predict something happening here?
DR. RICE: Steve, I don't think anybody could have predicted that these people would take an airplane and slam it into the World Trade Center, take another one and slam it into the Pentagon; that they would try to use an airplane as a missile, a hijacked airplane as a missile.
-
''Many people joked about the Italian Intelligence Force,'' Mr. Fini said, ''but actually they had information that in Genoa there was the hypothesis of an attack on the American president with the use of an airplane. That is why we closed the airspace above Genoa and installed antiaircraft missiles. Those who joked should now reflect.''
-Gianfranco Fini, the Italian deputy prime minister

Bush and Condi knew. They let 9/11 happen because they needed an excuse to invade iraq.

Barack "Hussein" Obama and V.P. Rev. J. Wright in 08!

GOD DAMN AMERICA!

Paulo
P.S. Keep dreaming lefties...he be toast.

Condi rice should not be avocated to be a step away from the presidency when she already failed as the poorest national security advisor in recent u.s. history, and her achievements as secretary of stae as well are poor indeed. under her "watch" the greatest strategic blunder in american history took place - the iraq war. In wooward's book, she showed she was not a good listener, but a pawn to the neocons. her record ever since has been less than candid and undistinguishable in every respect. she looks like a pipsqueak next to powell, a far more weighty choice. also of interest are other candidates like gov crist, kay bailey hutchison, elizabeth dole, or christopher cox. romney as well lacks character and integrity. but huckabee impresses with character and weighty personality - and chief executive experience.

She's more of a libertarian Republican than a conservative, and her presence at libertarian Grover Norquist's insider meeting confirms that. Condi is pro-choice and a strong fiscal con.

I wish the media would be more careful in political labeling.

Condi's a libertarian at heart, and we libertarian Republicans would be greatly enthusiastic about the McCain ticket if he picked her.

Oh please, let us hope the Republics are stupid enough for this. The most incompetent Secy of State and Nat'l Security Advisor ever paired w/Grampa McCain!?!? I love it. Let's hope she has a chance.

Condi Rice is qualified unlike the paper thin resume of Obama who has no foreign policy experience and dreams he is Abe Lincoln.Unlike Obama she isn't best buds with indicted Tony Rezko or other swarmy people who Obama has hung with including Jeremiah Wright and Saddams buddy Auchi! John McCain should seriously consider Rice she would give him more gravitas. Jerry White, Springfield, IL By the way McCain will cut your taxes not raise them as Barack and Hil are certain to do.

McCain might as well kiss off his campaign puting this token neocon as his running mate.
Most people even Republicans know that having anything with ties to George Bush will kill his election.

Rice would be one of several strong and conservative choices that McCain should seriously consider for his VP. In order to balance his somewhat liberal tendancies, his choice of Rice would give the ticket strong and proven leadership qualities that would definately bring a winning ticket. Rice has a backbone, a cool demeanor, and a tough skin.

jack lehow has it absolutely right. In an Administration populate with incompetent and ignorant ideologues, Condi Rice still stands out.

Her accomplishments? Allowing 9/11 and the Iraq debacle to happen on her watch. Oh, and being a really good, close friend of the President.

Methinks Condi benefits as much as King George from the "soft bigotry of low expectations."

I pray that Republicans would be dumb enough to try to elevate this bumbling fool to higher office. Bring on President Obama!

It's a sad day in America when others are judged by the words of another. No one can point to anything that Obama himself has said to offend or harm anyone. And yet he is being prosecuted for the words of someone else. How unAmerican! In fact reading some of these posts reminds me of the hate speeches of Mr. Wright. But when you utter words with such hatred and bigotry you can see no difference in you and he. You hypocrite! How would you feel if you were told that no one in America would vote for you sipmly because of your race? Or gender? Or the church you attend? And yet these same individuals who are bigots themselves are the very ones who condemn Mr. Wright. Obama's only crime is wanting to make America better...by wanting to unite others. Maybe people just want America to continue to fight with eachother and exist in a world that really hates her... How unAmerican!

Nothing could rally the anti-war vote to Obama/Clinton better than Condaleeza Rice on the ticket.

"By the way McCain will cut your taxes not raise them as Barack and Hil are certain to do."
Wow if you believe McCain is going to lower taxes i have some Pacific Beach front property to sell you Its located in the in Northern Missouri. These same Tax Cuts he says he is going to lower, he opposed until he announced his Candidacy was he not only opposed to them he even called them "irresponsible and reckless". No matter what either of the three say THE NEXT PRESIDENT IS GOING TO RAISE TAXES, OR KEEP TAXES WHERE THEY ARE AND BORROW MORE $$$$$ FROM CHINA.
If anyone thinks different there not only living under a rock, there just plain dumb.

By the time november rolls around, McCain's choice of a running mate is not going to matter. Because of the poor caliber of the democratic candidates, McCain would be able to win a 3 armed monkey growing out of his forehead!

What does Michelle Obama have to do with this story?

Nothing.

Try to stay on topic, RNC stooge.

all of u are stupid theparty in power that usually fucks up big time no matter who is in power gets booted out that is the way it is and the way it will always be.

When a retiring president is south of 40 percent in the polls, his party's proposed successor loses — there have been no exceptions — this is gwb

With Condi as VP McCain would have FOUR albatrosses around his neck re Iraq -- Bush, Cheney, Rice, and McCain. Not a winning combination when over 60% of the public think Iraq was a mistake.

What a brilliant choice, Condi Rice! Who else could offer the foreign policy qualifications? Plus I bet her pastor does not act like a Black Panther member.

I just finished watching Bush's War on Frontline and the first thing that came to my mind was Rice for VP. I did a quick search and found this artile. I think it would be a good pick up for McCain. Rice is one of the only ones left standing along with Cheney and throughout the entire 8 years she has been a constant woman of reason in an administration of big alpha male ego's..
