The Swamp

by Mark Silva

It's always good when good work is recognized, and the good work of the Tribune's Mike Dorning and Christi Parsons -- examinng Sen. Hillary Clinton's campaign claim to foreign policy experience and finding "scant evidence'' of deep participation in big events -- stood out here:

"The Chicago Tribune does us all a service by examining what exactly is Senator Clinton's experience,'' Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan writes in Direct Dish: "Read the whole thing, but the Macedonia and Northern Ireland claims are the most revealing:

"Pressed in a CNN interview this week for specific examples of foreign policy experience that has prepared her for an international crisis, Clinton claimed that she "helped to bring peace" to Northern Ireland and negotiated with Macedonia to open up its border to refugees from Kosovo,' the Tribune's Dorning and Parsons noted with help from Jim Tankersley and Rick Pearson in this week's report.

"Both claims are ludicrously untrue,'' Sullivan writes at Atlantic.com. "All she did in Northern Ireland was have tea with some local peace activist women.

"Laura Bush could argue, by that token, that she has ended AIDS in Africa.''

Of course Hillary brought peace to Northern Ireland. She raised her hands to the celestial skies and they opened upon her word. It rained "Peace."

And then she went to Kosovo and did the same thing.

But in the real world, she was charged with putting together a healthcare plan while Al Gore was sent to make sure that all of the bathrooms in the White House had toilet paper.

Give it up, Clintonphiles. Hillary's lying and Tina Fey knows it.

Oh, that was a really strong argument.

But in comparison, what has Obama done.

very good tribune''.now investigate what was said in canada ,that her team was involved in that nafta scandal.and her tax return not coming out.and pwter paul vs clinton.

Carol, Obama co-authored a weapons anti-proliferation bill with Senator Lugar of Indiana, winning high praise in response. More bipartisan cooperation like that, and perhaps we wouldn't be getting so many 3am calls in the first place.

Excellent cite for Trib.

How Obama Can Win

Obama, as many recognize, now seems to be in a box of his own making.

By declaring himself the candidate of the new politics, putting the politics of Rove et al. aside for a politics of honesty, straight-forward decency, and strength, he has putatively left the field open for Clinton et al. to lob innuendo after innuendo. If he responds, he is in violation of his commitment to the new; if he continues with his current path of non-response, he will be taken down by a series of attacks, that however false or fantastic, will eventually raises doubts in the mind of the electorate as to the validity of his new politics, and will, in the great viscera of the electorate, so responsive and so easily changed, appear "weak."

If he attacks, it is said, he betrays himself; if he continues on the same path, he is whittled down by rumor and insinuation.

Clinton's current strength is her ability to attack, however true the nature and content of the attacks. Obama must turn this very behavior into its own negative. To do so, Obama must relentlessly name what she is doing and anchor it--calling for an "end to the era of 'kitchen sink' politics, i.e.:

"It's about time that we left the era of "kitchen sink" politics, of distortion and insinuation, behind us. We have all seen it before this--a period where it was often difficult to tell falsehood, rumor, and misinformation from truth. It was this type of politics that contributed to a war in which we have lost the best of our national treasure, our nation's men and women. It is this type of politics that our opponents not so long ago decried. And it is this type of politics that, more than anything else, signals weakness--the inability to base one's statements and actions on the firm ground of truth, on our collective and honest dedication to the construction of a new and positive future--and instead, on a retreat into the politics of personal destruction.

It's time to take out the dirty dishes; It's time to empty the kitchen sink. After an era where it was often difficult to distinguish fantasy from truth, it's time to put that era behind us, to base our future efforts on strong and honest desire to build a new and better future."

What Obama can create is his own "There you go again" moment--one that will both define Clinton (someone, after all, has to do it), and places the Clinton camp in their very own box, of their own making: Where any attack will be immediately associated be in the voter's mind, and accompanied by a roll of the voter's eyes, as another example of Clinton's "kitchen sink" politics--of the chaotic, inconsistent, contradictory and frantic willingness to say or do anything to be elected--be it the changing of one's personality, tone, degree of honesty--or one's degree of tolerance or gusto for the politics of personal destruction.

Without attack, this demonstrates the nature of the Clinton camp: when attacked, and in danger of loss, rather than respond with strength, principle and authority, they throw the "kitchen sink", abandoning principles and frantically strewing innuendo as they do so.

With moral force, it names exactly what the Clinton camp is doing, and anchors it both to the politics of the past Administration, and to the very political tactics that Clinton herself has denounced and disavowed. It provides direct evidence--thus far, the only direct evidence, of how a Clinton Administration would likely govern in times of chaos, crisis, and other "3 a.m. moments", thus disempowering her already factually shaky appeals to foreign policy superiority--with a "kitchen sink" approach of tumultuous, changing, disorganized and contradictory attack--rather than with consistent purpose and moral authority.

Obama must persistently name what the Clinton camp is doing rather than complain--and he must then link it to the very essence of an old politics that has been lived through by all of us, and denigrated by most, over the past 8 years.

Thus named, and thus defined, Obama can then invite Clinton up to the higher ground--to a debate based on policy and principle--or she can choose to stay in the box that she and her camp have created.

I don't understand where she is getting this 3 AM non-sense. Is she implying that she was pulling the strings in the Clinton White House? If not, what is she going for here? The gold medal in standing there? Her argument comes down to the fact that she was in the building when dissensions where being made. You know, I saw the fire department put out a blaze once...THAT DOES NOT MAKE ME A FIRE MAN!!!

The problem with your dip stick analogy is that Laura Bush and aids in Africa are not ended YET She will be soon. Thank The Republican Church goers for the use of No Abortion for aids infected mothers who want the to help the continuation of AIDS in Africa.

If Hillary's experience as the wife of the Predator in Chief qualifies her to be president, then Roger Clemens' wife will be pitching for the Yankees next year. This is not some banana republic where el presidente's wife becomes his successor so he can continue in office. Or is it?

Now tell us what the Great O has done, oh excuse me wasn't he too busy running for president to do anything. Shall we hope our way through foreign policy?

iWe owe a lot to Mike Dorning and Christi Parsons,THANK YOU FOR THE COMMENDABLE JOURNALISM. Even if it had come out more favorable for Clinton, I still think it is worth our kudos. Too bad so much garbage is circulated

I do believe I mention Hillary had allot of experience with tea and cookies in foreign countries but little else.

She is so full of it with all this ready on day one stuff. Ready to do what, eat cookies and drink tea.

When the phone rings at 3:00 am, it's good to know a potential president Clinton would have her tea ceremony etiquette to fall back on. What a joke.

Hillary Clinton president or monster???

But in comparison, what has Obama done???

Hillary has done something under the circumstances. She was a part of it. She was not the President then - so what would you expect?

But that experience itself is 1000 times more than what Obama has.

Obama has NOTHING! NO EXPERIENCE, NO EXPOSURE TO ANY CRITICAL SITUATION. HE WILTS IN A PRESS CONFERENCE!!!!

The country should vote Hillary back into the White House so that she can return the furniture she stole during her last stay.

Obama was not the ranting idiot who tried to say he had done soooo much more than Hillary...that lie is all Hillary's...conce again

Before the Obamaites exercise their usual prejudice, name calling, and sarcasm, let's look at some other sources:

Hillary did not sign treaties as First Lady but she certainly has a lot more knowledge of and involvement in a large number of countries that Obama cannot even begin to emulate. Please do not trivialize Hillary’s contributions because you support Obama and you want to cover for his inadequacies in that arena.

Americans are so dumb. We are facing the one of the biggest economic crisis since the great depression, and we have selected three candidates with no economic experience or experience running anything at all. Obama is a Fake, he is the cool kid in class who runs for student government based on popularity makes promises he cant deliver, Clinton is the nerdy girl in the class who cant connect with the people, and McCain is the dumb jock hero who keeps showing up at house parties 10 years after graduation and you just want him to go away. Obama would be the worst, but all three would be bad. This whole idea of "change" and a "new politics of hope" is stupid. Any one who really believes Obama is going to take troops out of Iraq in 90 days, is sniffing the same stuff Obama did in High School. Hope is the language of the primaries, Reality is the langauge of of the Oval Office. Stupid America. Stupid People.

Nice job Mike and Christi. Keep up the good work!

Andrew Sullivan? You're really quoting Andrew Sullivan without explaining who he is, or his long-term, daily, vicious and practically demented anti-Clinton attacks? Wow, you'll take praise wherever you can find it, and present it however dishonestly you need to, won't you? Pathetic.

CNN has the story right - they examine Clinton's record and see for the most part, her claims are very true. She played an integral role in Northern Ireland. Go read the article. In her 8 years in the senate - she has reached across the isle many times to sponser bipartisan legislation for childrens healthcare, veterans benefits, childrens testing, and so forth.

What has Obama done in his 2 years in the senate? Sweeping ethics reform? You have to stand to to take lobbysist money, but you can't sit? His own colleague in the Illinois State Senate has said he didn't do "anything bold or across party line" while he was a State Senator. Obama blames that Republicans where in control. What's the matter? I thought he was supposed to be able to bring people together - seems like that wasn't the case then - why should it be now.

Everyone bashes Clinton, but this guy is SCARY. I'm sorry, but if this is a job interview, you would hire the person with the most experience. If being a "Community Organizer" and a "State Legislator" meant you were prepared for the presidency, then every body and their uncle would be good enough for the job.

Get real.

"helped to bring peace to Northern Ireland"

Sure. Kinda like she's "helping" end hate and discrimination against Muslims in the US? Thanks, but we don't need that kind of help. She's shown us what kind of leader she will be in this past year. Divisive. Spiteful. Two-faced.

If I were voting, I wouldn't care if Obama just walked in out of the cold. Judging him from what I've actually seen him do in this campaign, and compared to that hate-monger, he'd have my vote.

Carol/Tamika3, Why don't you look up Obama's record and make your own decision on his experience. Wikipedia has a good bio.

Good call, Seth. Andrew Sullivan is an angry anti-Clinton zealot. Nice of Mark Silva to toot his own horn too.

The Tribune is a little misleading too. Wives of President have enormous influence on policies. That is not taken into consideration.

FDR's wife had huge impact on American Policies back in the '40's. Just look into the history book.

The Tribune is investigating these claims from an opinionated point of view. Since, when did Presidential wives had no influence over their husbands?

Actually, only one group of the Northern Ireland groups said that Clinton's efforts were silly. Ask the womens groups! The Republican side?

Hmm... biased are you?

And why is Chi Tribune not talking about Obama's lies on NAfta/Canada and Iraq/Powers and Yes We Can/Huerta and Rezko/Blagojevich/Soutside mansion and Axelrod/Exelon Lobby and so much more?

Because the tribune, unlike the sun, gets its money from the Daleys. And Obama is a Daley lackey.

Breaking News!!! Major Political Scandal!!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucasus. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican cheating.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket now! All democrats need to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton. So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your WINNER! They are the best I have ever seen.

You should be angry America. “This is not a game” (Hillary Clinton)

Sincerely

jacksmith...

I think the Houston Chronicle does a better job, as it reported while avoiding editorializing.

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/nation/5604541.html

I think her experience speaks for itself. So does the fact that Obama wasn't even part of national foreign policy conversations. That's inexperience speaking.

HAHAHAHA This blogger really has a handle on where to locate unbiased press coverage! HAHAHAHAHA

In terms of general election postulating, it strikes me that Obama's big wins in small states is MORE impressive and important for the party's chance in November than Hillary's narrow wins in big states.

In light of recent shenanigans, its impossible to know what would happen in Ohio and Florida with either candidate versus McCain, but Obama looks to have a much better chance of turning red states blue, such as Virginia, Wyoming, Missouri and others. Either Democrat would be nearly assured of winning California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and nearly assured of losing Texas, so I don't see Hillary's wins in these states being as relavent in the general election.

Barack Obama has fared better against John McCain than Hillary Clinton has since the earliest days of the primary campaign.

I pray that Hillary will not rip the party apart and hand the presidency to John McCain in her losing effort to secure the nomination that does not belong to her on account of the plurality of states, votes, and pledged delegate counts which all favor Senator Barack Obama.
