The Swamp

by Mark Silva

Vice President Dick Cheney landed in Baghdad this morning, with an unannounced stop in the Iraqi capital near the eve of the fifth anniversary of the war.

Cheney swapped Air Force Two at a stop at Great Britain’s Mildenhall Royal Air Force Base for a nondescript C-17 transport plane – much like the conveyance used for his surprise stop in Afghanistan and Pakistan last year – riding a stainless-steel skinned Airstream executive trailer-cabin strapped into the belly of the military transport.

The vice president, who is making an announced trip through Israel and the West Bank as well as Turkey, landed unannounced in Baghdad at 12:44 a.m. EDT today.

His traveling crew donned helmets and body armor for the helicopter-cade into town. This is a return trip for Cheney, who last toured Iraq in May.

Cheney was meeting today with Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker, who are preparing their next progress report on the war for Congress in April.

Cheney will meet with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and President Jalal Talabani and have lunch with the the presidency council, which also includes Vice Presidents Adel Abd al-Mehdi and Tariq al-Hashimi. He will have one-on-one meetings with each.

The vice president also planned a meeting with Chairman Hakim of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq, the powerful Shiite political coalition, and Speaker Mashhadani of the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

Then dinner with Petraeus and other generals.

En route to Iraq, a senior administration official was asked how much of the vice president’s discussions with Iraqi leaders will be security-related and how much of the talks will be related to legislation. “I think it’s a mix,’’ the official said.

The vice president had last gone there in May, the official noted, and this visit is a chance for him to see “how much things in Baghdad have changed….Now he can see first hand what progress has been made.”

With thanks to John McKinnon of the Wall Street Journal, print pool reporter on the vice president’s trip.

Anyway we can keep him from returning?

He has to see how his investment is doing.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised to see McCain and Cheney in Iraq when the country is in finanical ruins. I bought less than 14 gallons of gas this morning and it cost me over 47 dollars.

This is really comical. What this is all about is simple,Heir Cheney is a taking a victory lap at the expense of the American tax payer.

He is high fiving all the oil producing nations on their victory over the American people.

Their goal is complete, reduce the middle class to pre 1992 levels and fortify the financial futures of the chosen few.

How come the "liberators" have to go to Iraq unnanounced in the cover of night and stay mostly in the Green Zone, yet the Iranian President can roam around outside of the Green Zone without 100 soldiers and helicopters hovering above? Looks like our remaking of the Middle East is going great.

Maybe Dick Cheney and John McCain can take a stroll down George W. Bush Avenue in Baghdad and see all the wonders their ingenuity has wrought - Bronze statues of Don Rumsfeld, Bush, Cheney, Gen Tommie Franks glisten in the morning sun; Starbucks, McDonalds, Blockbuster, and Dollar General stores are abuzz with customers; groups of young girls rush over to throw carnations and roses at the great liberators; gas is selling for 25 cents a gallon; the Green Zone is a massive park with swans floating on blue lagoons. It must give Cheney a wonderful feeling to be back in Iraq.

He'll see the violence is down yet NO progress made politically at all. No vote on oil distribution, no vote on unity, no basic services restored for the people.....5 years people. We are now back to "stay the course" while the government is too corrupt and too unwilling to do a thing for their own people. But the republicans would rather run us economically into the ground than admit they were wrong.

Wow. Where are your neocon defenders now, DICK?

Tut, Tut, Bill. If they admitted they were wrong, they would be showing themselves to be pussies. What ARe you thinking?

Needed a fillup for Air force 2.
I'll say it again;
Impeach Cheney!

I find it odd that Jeff and Paulo thinks it makes you more of an American if you stroll around city streets in Iraq's Green Zone than to go to America's inner cities or trailer park communities and attend BBQs and neighborhood picnics to get a sense of how average Americans are coping with the economic pressures of everyday life. I'm sure when St. McCain and Cheney return they will make sure to attend fundraisers chock full of multi-millionaires. Rest assured when the revolution comes Paulo and Jeff will be the first against the wall.

Everybody see those pictures of McCain getting off the helicopter with the helmet and the flak jacket?

Jo is right - how come the President of Iran can go whereever he wants, and when Cheney goes there, it is in secret, and reporters are told to not say where he is until he leaves that place?????

I find it interesting that for the first time in US history, that an illegal war in being used as an election tool. Kinda makes you think eh?

If McCain and Cheney will forego their armor, helmets, helicopters, Secret Service, and Blackwater protection and go shopping for rugs in a Baghdad marketplace, them I'll be convinced that things are getting better and that it was all worth it.

Jackson:

I think that the location of one of McCain's townhall meetings says it all about the Republicans.

He held it at a country club outside of Philadelphia.

"CHENEY SPEAKS"

WOW, LOOK AT ALL THE "PALM TREES"
WOW, LOOK AT ALL THE DIRT ROADS THAT ARE NOW DIRT ROADS.

WOW, LOOK I BROUGHT TO YOU THE LATEST IRAQ WAR ASSESSMENTS FROM THE EXPERTS THAT WE WILL RELEASE TO YOU IN A CD FOR $20.00 U.S. DOLLARS BY MAIL ORDER ONLY.

WOW, DOES ANYONE WANT TO GO HOME? PSYCH! JUST KIDDING.

bill r,

Do you think Dickie boy will visit any of the 2.1 million displaced Iraqi's, many squatting in bombed out buildings or shantytowns in complete squalor and without basic services? Maybe he would have been better served to stay home and watch the CNN special last night.

Where is Jeff to praise the man that "says what he means, and means what he says"? As of yesterday 3,988 U.S. deaths in Iraq. Thousands more minus limbs and/or with scrambled brains. $15 billion dollars a month in a never-ending war. Thanks Dick!

You Lefty Loon piece of trash. The President has already done this...the President of Iran that is. There I go again using facts and truth to back up my arguments. Sorry I couldn't help you out right wingers. You're on your own.

I hope he say's hello to all the real terrorists in Saudi Arabia and Crawford Texas.

Hey, there is real progress being made in Iraq. KBR made record profits last year, while illegally inmprisoning their own employee because she complained about being raped. Blackwater got away with mass murder without losing their US government contract.

Iraq is now the Republican paradise where corporations can do what ever they want with zero consequences, all on the taxpayers dime.

32+ dead in a suicide bombing today. Electricity, water and food items are spotty, shoddy and priced thru the roof. FIVE YEARS LATER AND THE COUNTRY OUTSIDE THE GREEN ZONE IS IN WORSE PHYSICAL CONDITION THAN IT EVER WAS WHILE SADDAM WAS IN POWER.

This is "Progress". This is "Success". We broke it, and we still can't fix it, and the bill is way past due.

Can anybody out there tell me about a nationthat completely converted itself from a demonic, threatening dictatorship into a successful democracy in less than 5 years? Anybody? Even our very own nation took decades to solidify. I know you don't want Iraq to succeed, but you have to at least have the wherewithall to give it more than 5 years to determine it a failure.
And I wouldn't be so sure that the prez of Iran was unguarded. Anybody believing that needs to stop drinking the kool-aid cause its propaganda.
viva Dick! Now - Bring on the name-calling losers.

Why yes Stevie, I can..Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, South Africa, Spain....want to hear more?

It's really not uncommon for a nation to be a fully functional democracy in less than 5 years after the overthrow of a dictator.

Does your library not stock history books?

So the lying, loathsome war profiteer Cheney is visiting Bagdad. What a waste of taxpayer money. Here he's responsible for the deaths of almost 4,000 serviceman and many more thousands of Iraqis and he's jet-setting about when he should be occupying a prison cell next the Dubya. And the GOP claims we Dems are too easy on criminals!

Steve S,

You can't install democracy at the point of a gun, is the forgotten lesson. At least not in VN, Cambodia, Laos, Iraq or Afg, apparently.
