At the State Department today, on this day when so many have spoken about the 4,000 American military men and women lost in Iraq, President Bush paused to voice his sympathy with the families of the fallen.
"On this day of reflection, I offer our deepest sympathies to their families,'' the president said, with Secretary of State Condoleezzaa Rice by his side. "I hope their families know that the citizens pray for their comfort and strength, whether they were the first one who lost their life in Iraq or recently lost their lives in Iraq -- that every life is precious in our sight.
"And I guess my one thought I wanted to leave with those who still hurt is that one day people will look back at this moment in history and say, thank God there were courageous people willing to serve, because they laid the foundations for peace for generations to come,'' he said.
"I have vowed in the past, and I will vow so long as I'm president, to make sure that those lives were not lost in vain, that, in fact, there is a outcome that will merit the sacrifice that civilian and military alike have made; that our strategy going forward will be aimed at making sure that we achieve victory and, therefore, America becomes more secure and these young democracies survive, and peace more likely as we head into the 21st Century.''

The Iraq War was, and is, a war of choice.

"Bush voices sympathy for fallen, 'not lost in vain"
That's kind of funny coming from a guy (Bush) who has yet to attend even one military funeral and when it was his time to serve his country he dodged the draft while his peers were over in Nam fighting and dying for their country.

"I have vowed in the past, and I will vow so long as I'm president, to make sure that those lives were not lost in vain."
GW
It's going to take some heavy lifting for many years for that to be true.
Since GW only vows to do any lifting over the next 10 months ("as long as I'm president"), it's not likely this hope will come true.
He should have said, "I will work until my dying day to make sure these lives are not lost in vain." But that would require sacrifices that he hasn't required of the public, and since he never asked the public to sacrifice, why should he?

Bush really thought that he could just go in with his cowboy hat and knock down Saddam Hussein and claim the oil fields for himself and his buddies. He didn't count on the Iraqis rebelling to an occupation, the insurgency, and the infighting between the various sectarian groups. He did not destroy terrorism, but help propagate it and make it even more dangerous by bringing it into Iraq rather than go after it in the hills of Afghanistan. Thw world is worst off since the Bush/Cheney/Wolfowitz/Rumsfeld Iraq War debacle.
There is no victory for the immoral aggressor - the U.S. Our young people will continue to die in a foreign land that was nothing more than dollar signs and oil revenues to warmongers and power hungry neo-cons whose agenda was an imperialist aim to conquer and steal the wealth of other nations. Now the arrogant congueror will pay for generations to come because by destroying another country and innocent people, America has been cursed vis-a-vis the economy, the trillions of debt to China, storms, corporate corruption, and God only knows what else.
Terrorism is not our only worry; the greater enemy is the arrogance of fools running our government.

"CONDI READS DAILY PRESIDENTIAL MEMO FIVE YEARS LATER"
I WAS GOING TO TELL YOU, BUT YOU SEEMED SO BUSY WITH THE "PATRIOT ACT"
AND MASTERMINING "WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRACTIONS."
I KNEW YOU WERE GOING TO USE THE 7OO MILLION "EARMARKED" FOR AFGANISTAN TO PAY "CHALIBI" HIS MILLIONS TO DELIVER UNTO "THE IRAQI GOVERNEMENT." BUT THE 9 BILLION DOLLARS LOST BY "BLACKWATER" NOW THAT WAS OVER THE TOP.
OUR MEN AND WOMEN DIDN'T DIE IN VAIN. THEY ARE THE "PROUD THE FEW" THEY ARE THE MEN AND WOMEN CREATED BY A WOMAN NO LESS IN UNIFORM. THEY ARE THE MEN AND WOMEN WHO ACTUALLY REMEMBER "SERVING THEIR COUNTRY" GEORGE. SO OF COURSE THEY DID NOT DIE IN VAIN.
OF COURSE I WILL TELL JOHN MCCAIN WHO THE REAL "AL QUEDA" IS AND WHO THE REAL ISLAMO FASCIST ARE. HE HAS "SENIOR" MOMENTS AND GETS UPSET WHEN YOU CORRECT HIM.
OF COURSE I WILL USE A SECURED LOBBYED "AT&T LONG DISTANCE" LINE OF COMMUNICATION AWAY FROM "PRESIDENTIAL SERVERS" OR NATIONAL ARCHIVE "SERVERS."
JUST KEEP HENRY AT BAY FOR ANOTHER SIX (6) MONTHS AND I THINK WE WILL SURVIVE THIS "AUGEMENTATION" OF A WAR.

Then the moron should have figured out how to win it while he was still vice president, because he's about to hand a quagmire over to his successor, and there is no guarantee of any positive outcome here. How do we define "succsess"? How many Americans have to die before we can call it a victory and come home. And if we ARE there for another 100 years as mcbush says we will be, who is winning? Not that any republitard has any answers to these questions.

Bush and Cheney should be in Iraq fighting their Republican war of greed that they launched against Saddam Hussein. America should be disgusted at the Bush / Cheney adminstration and they should be disgusted at all Republicans and those who were in favor of this illegal unconstitutional war. Each American and Iraqi death is one that has nothing to do wth protecting and serving America, making Americans safer from terrorists, or making Iraqi people free. Bush & Cheney misused and abused our nation’s military for personal and political gain and the death of our soldiers means nothing to these spineless Republican chicken hawks who are in favor of waging war from afar as long as it is someone elses children who have to fight it and die in it. And don’t fool yourself America…just because John McCain was a prisoner of war, that does not qualify him to lead this nation in any military fashion. It simply qualifies him to be a prisoner of war and nothing more. The blood of every dead and wounded American and Iraqi is and will always be on the hands of Bush, Cheney and all Republicans who were for this war and all Democrats who were stupid enough to be duped into supporting this Republican war of greed. The only real winners here are the rich wealthy elitists who are into oil like Bush, Cheney & Haliburton and the private contractors that have thrown American taxpayer dollars away.

"YOUR an idiot" You got the U.S in a mess but of course you are to ashame to admit it. So you are just going to leave it to someone else who takes your place to "clean up" the mess you left. Just to say I am a mother of a Iraq Veteran which he served 2 tours in Iraq. So "WACK BUSH" you know NOthing......of war so just ZIP IT. "WHY" don't you send your daughters and old wife out there on this battle and your old behind...???

A little bit of truth, "thetruth."
The US public debt is, as of this month, about $9.4 trillion. Of that, about $5.3 trillion is held by the public. (To reduce it, cash in your savings bonds and T-bills.) China holds a little over $1 trillion in dollar-denominated assets, of which about $330 billion is in T-notes. So, instead of "trillions in debt to China," the portion of the national debt held by China is about $330 billion, or about 4% of the total.
Many have argued that it is a good thing to have debt held by others. Why? It gives them a stake in your survival. With $1 trillion plus in dollar-denominated assets, China has a stake in the value of the dollar; if it declines, China gets poorer. Probably why you haven't seen China, or any other government for that matter, dumping dollars.

Bush-- The only way to honor fallen American soldiers is to keep making more of them. To hell with the Iraqis doing their part with their own political solution after Cheney/Bush bombed the hell out of their country.
Iraq never attacked us. Since Bush disbanded the Iraqi army and police force-- all internal motivation has been usurped-- by Bush design. Bush is a troop abuser-- no way to win--but more will continue to be killed, have legs and arms blown off and brave and courageous brains rattled.
