This just in from the endorsement derby:
Former Illinois Gov. Jim Edgar, a popular moderate who once had White House ambitions of his own, has endorsed Sen. John McCain of Arizona.
The announcement of Edgar's endorsement comes a day after former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was harshly critical of McCain. Hastert supports former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.
In a statement released by the McCain campaign, Edgar said:
"We live in a time of great uncertainty. Our economy is teetering on the edge of a major setback. Terrorists continue to threaten our American way of life. In these uncertain times, we need leadership we can trust. We need leadership that is guided by principle, not political expediency. We need John McCain. He is the only leader with a consistent record of standing up for what is right, not just what's easy.''

Hear that, Denny? That's the sound of a REAL Illinois Republican telling you to STFU.
p.s. The answer was NO, Mitt!

Clap! Clap! Clap! Edgar has always been a fair and balanced Politician.

Another member of the Republican establishment endorses McCain.
Which should make it clear who the "establishment" Republican candidate is, and who ISN'T the "insurgent".

OH, how I wish Tommy Thompson was still running. John McCain, Mitt Romney, Hillary and Barack leave me cold. Guess I'll be voting for the Constitution Party!

The correct answer was "NO" I dont know former speaker Hassert, but he presided over the Rumsfelt IRAQ debacle and watched the GOP lose the house in the 2006 elections. Then he steps down. Not sure which of Romney's pro-life or pro choice positions he is for
John MCCain will get the support of thiniking republcans, who to see Hillary denied the White House.
Support flip flopper Romney and the result will be Bill and Hillary in the White House.

Denny's afraid he won't be a delegate? He is listed for Romney. Watch your delegate votes. I agree with Edgar.

glad to hear we still have some good republican in ILLINOIS - Thanks Jim. Romney will not win in Kane - if you watch, who ever Denny supports has lost every election in Kane - does that tell you something??

McCain said on "Face the Nation" last week that he would, if elected, sign the McCain Kennedy illegal alien amnesty bill.
I wish he were a flip-flopper, but he's remaining steadfast in his inane views.
No wonder he is the darling of the New York Times editorialists.
Romney's best attribute is that he is not McCain

As if it weren't sad enough to be a Republican in this Godawful state, now one of the only former Republican Governors we've been able to remember with admiration...has done an Ahhhnold and supported the barely-Republican John McCain. Ugggh! I really don't know why the various folks have been endorsing McCain this week other than, as Fox News put it this morning, "They want jobs." I don't dislike everything about McCain, but he is FAR too liberal and deceptive for my liking. His inability to directly answer many questions (going into one of his off-topic schpeels about being a POW, or having favored the surge before others...), and his utterly misleading, last-minute trick against Mitt Romney to take the lead in Florida before Romney and almost everyone else--even some in the liberal media!--could label him as a liar...these things all leave such distaste for McCain and anyone calling themselves a Republican, yet favoring McCain over Romney. I would even prefer Huckabee to McCain, in spite of the "Eddie Haskell" vibe HE gives off.
I grew up in Illinois, but waited until I was over 30 to vote--until I could find a trustworthy candidate--a GOOD Man, with GOOD values. I found a few such men in President Bush 41, Bob Dole, and President Bush 43. I have no regrets and have never had to look at them in hindsight as anything but good men, trying to do the right thing.
This year will be different, because I feel that if true Conservative Republicans don't buck this bandwagon trend and support Mitt Romney, we will be stuck with either McCain's centerist, Republocrat rule, or--more likely--the nauseating Hillary or (the National Review's current "Most Liberal Senator in Washington") Obama.
Governor Thompson, would you like to redeem some pride for Illinois Republicans and endore a true Republican? C'mon, please???

Correction to earlier post: Obama is the National JOURNAL's current "Most Liberal Senator" (I erred and referred to the National REVIEW.).
Thank you.

Didn't say who former governors Thompson and Ryan endorsed. I suppose that Ryan can't vote this time around.

I thought about voting for McCain, but I lost ALL respect for him after watching his representative on WTTV last night. They asked about his plan for health care, and he started harping on the "obesity crisis." Obesity is the most exaggerated risk factor there ever was. Much of the costs come from risky diet pills. That McCain is going to solve the health care crisis by blaming fat people is laughable. What that tells me is he is going to be influenced by Pharma, which will create more hysteria, to sell more pills, to cause even more problems. Which we be blamed on fat people themselves. I want a leader, not a corporate shill!

McCain is an arrogant, elitist, Washington in-sider who has more liberal positions and friends in Congress than he has credibility as a principled Republican and supporter of conservative causes. Everyone please vote for Romney on Tuesday!

McCain lost me when he pandered to the religious right.

McCain is a Democrat in Republican clothing. Anyone who would work side by side with Kennedy can't be anything else. I felt Gov. Edgar was the best governor Illinois had in many years. However, his work on the Board of Directors for Kemper Insurance put a very big black spot on his record. All the while he was voicing agreement with the new management, the company was slowly going under after 90+ years in business. I now find it hard to believe anything Mr. Edgar says. He was one of the biggest political disappointments I ever encountered. I would think twice before taking his word on McCain.

Sorry to comment again, but I would like to officialy rescind my earlier statement that "I would even prefer Huckabee to McCain." Anyone considering Huckabee, a man who tries to come off as being above politics as usual (not too convincingly), should know this: Last evening, I posted something respectful to Huckabee's home site, http://www.mikehuckabee.com/?FuseAction=Blogs.View&Blog_id=1320&CommentPage=1#Comments . My post wasn't insulting Huckabee, but I did make my preference for Mitt Romney clear. I waited and the post never appeared. So I again posted, asking if the site was censored to allow only pro-Huckabee comments, or was it actually a forum for discussion? Although this blog site claims to be uncensored, the second post never appeared. Anyone who doesn't believe me should try to politely post there, anything other than blind adoration of Huckabee: Your post will never make it!
If this type of politicking just irks you, as it does me, please stand up as a Republican and vote for Mitt Romney on Tuesday or whenever your election is held.

Make room on the bandwagon ! Edgar has previously endorsed Giuliani, but now wants to be with a winner. If he helps McCain as much as he helped Giuliani, well...
It's disappointing that the Tribune writers just fawn over these meaningless endorsements without pointing out Edgar's former allegiance with Giuliani.
Please -- let's just expose these phony developments for what they are. NOTHING.

Edgar is the last of the Illinois Republicans who has any stature left. The rest including George Ryan, Denny Hastert, Judy Baar are all the reason why I ran away from the Illinois Republican party. Heck these clowns could not even support Pat Fitsgerald, and Jack Ryan.
Go job Mr. Edgar. Hastert, you can go cash in all the land deals.

Interesting piece in the Hill Newspaper today (accessible via Drude) that chronicles how McCain had a month long discussion with the Democrat leaders in the Senate about the prospect of him switching to the Democratic side in 2001.
He also spent a week contemplating whether or not he would take up John Kerry's offer to be his VP running mate on the Democrat ticket in 2004.
He co-sponsored major bills with Teddy Kennedy, Russ Feingold and Joe Lieberman.
He said last week on "Face the Nation," that if President, he would sign the Kennedy-McCain illegal alien amnesty bill.
Can any real Republican vote for this chameleon?

McCain lost me when he pandered to the 3rd World illegal aliens.
Hope a lot of them vote for him in the primaries.
Serious Reagan Republicans won't.
